IceFang Tribe

original thread ↗

Hello everyone,

I'm just returning from an extensive hiatus from gaming. I first started Ogres in Feb. 2008 with a Battalion Box. I had just given up my Orcs and Goblins, of over 10 years and wanted to try something completely different. Turns out, a few weeks after I got the box, I wound up separating, then divorcing. I was already in college as a non-traditional student and had custody of my, then 3 y/o boy. Since then, I've remarried, I now have 4 children, I've finished my B/S in Psychology and am a few months away from a Master's in Emergency Management and Homeland Security! Looking at things today, I have not played a game since 2008. No games under 8th edition and only 3 games with a friends borrowed Ogre army under 7th.

I began Ogres because I had already been playing WFB for 10 years, primarily as an Orc & Goblin player. As of the time I began ogres, I still had not painted all of the 300+ models I had. I had gotten to where using O&G was tedious instead of enjoyable, so I sold the army and began again. I thought of different races and around this time, Ogres had come out. It was an army with a low model count, easily painted, and something I thought I could stay caught up with in terms of new models and units. However, I do not yet have the new Ogre book.

I went with IceFang Tribe because the scratch built Ogres are painted with a blue tint. They hail from high in the mountains and, hence, the blue skin. However, I wanted to paint my Ogres a more traditional, pinkish, hue. My thought was that the blue-skinned Ogres could have been conquered or owe some sort of debt to another tribe, so they work together.

Just last night, I pulled the Ogres out of the closet, re-mixed some GW paint with water and began painting.

I, currently, have two different kinds of Ogres. I friend of mine got me started by selling me his custom built Ogres. From there, I bought two bsttle boxes and then expanded from there. My model count includes:

GW Models / Scratch-built[/u]
1 tyrant / 1 tyrant
0      /     1 bruiser
3 butchers / 1 butcher
8 ironguts / 4 ironguts
6 man hunters
1 hunter
2 giants
3 rhinox
35 gnoblars
18 ogres./ 17 & 3 flags ogres
4 leadbelchers / 4 leadbelchers
4 ogres not built

The models in blue represent those scratch built and painted with a blue skin. I plan on keeping them this way because they hold a special meaning to me. The other models are regular GW releases from the first run.

I bought my first battle box the first Saturday in Feb '08 and had the army assembled by 2/14/08. This is the first army picture of the IceFang Tribe.

Welcome back to the hobby, and well done mate. Sounds like you've been through the mill (I know that feeling!) and come out the otherside-Well done a great to hear your life has turned such a positive corner with your qualifications!

Well done, and the models are looking good to! Welcome to the Stronghold! :)
Thanks, I'll be posting some more photo close-ups because I've tried to add some individuality to some of the models.

Now I just have to learn the army again!

First grouping of Bulls, and a 'Gladiator style bull. I've tried to individualize them with kegs, arrow wounds, and battle trophies.

Ironguts, Leadbelchers, and Giant 1. I converted this badboy several years ago. I cut off the tree/mile marker on the original model and replaced it with an entire Orc chariot. I removed a wheel, added a black orc banner head to it, and used it as a small buckler for the other arm.

Here is the first couple of stages done on my Bulls. I've basecoated the flesh and pants, and then drybrushed the next layer. So skin and pants are done. This is, also, my two other giants...a 'Frost' Giant and a Chaos giant I made ages ago.

I had a nice spring break, unfortunately away from painting, but I did manage to paint the beginnings of some gnoblar's. Pic's to be up shortly.

Great start there.
Have you yet got hold of the latest Army book?
I ask because I notice you have a mix of Ironfists and additional hand weapons in your Bulls.
I wondered if this was deliberate or "just happened"!

Looking good otherwise, I look forward to seeing more as you progress.

HG
To answer your question, I built under the last edition rules and actually had units with additional weapons and units with ironfists. I do not have the newest book, so I'm not sure which is more beneficial, so for painting and pictures, I'm just grouping them together. For playing, if one is more beneficial than the other, I'll either have the front rank with the right weapon, or simply use as many of the 'right choice' as I have. I figure I'll cross that bridge when I get to it...lol.

Also, have some more pics!!

I've base coated and highlighted the flesh on my Gnoblars, and nearly finished my Rhinox's and Riders.

A closeup of the Gnoblar flesh tones. I used a darker green base and a lighter green highlight. I'm thinking red tongues, brown clothes and black boots.
