My Ogres so far! Latest update - Firebelly Finished - P5

original thread ↗

Hi all, I am a new poster and new to Ogre Kingdoms.
I "inherited" an Ogre army from Brimstone (from Warseer) when he passed on, and I've now begun to paint up and add to them.
Here are some pics for you of what I have done so far:
Tyrant

BSB (also in the BSB thread)

Ninja Maneater

Pirate Maneater

Empire Maneater

Limited Edition Bruiser/Maneater

Avatars of War Bruiser/Tyrant/Maneater

Ironguts

More Ironguts

Bulls

More Bulls

Gnoblars

More Gnoblars

Gnoblar Trappers

Magic Markers

C&C welcome

HG
I was looking at that Avatars of War model just the other day. It really fits in well with the GW models.

Totally envious of your paint job on the whole lot.
Ogre achievements: 40/101

There is no question that Maneaters is not the answer too.
My Warhammer Blog Sigmar's Workbench

Read the not so epic tales of George the Gorger. My gorger who never does anything
Thanks. :D
It's a very easy paint scheme, but I think the camera is "flattering" the reality a little bit!
Flesh is really easy, base coat Tallarn Flesh, wash with Ogryn Flesh, "highlight" back with Tallarn Flesh, and then use a small amount of Devlan Mud for the face to emphasize the features.
Done! :D
I used Baal red to run along the scars and veins on the AoW mini, but that was it basically.
Oh, Dheneb Stone on the teeth and eyeballs (if you can see them to paint them that is!) and washed those with Gryphonne Sepia.
Like I said, a very easy scheme, and quite quick too.

I've used a very limited pallet on the rest as well, either Mordian Blue, Orkhide Green or Terracotta for the trousers, with the exception of the Tyrant who got Warlock Purple as it's more "regal"! ;)
All washed with Devlan Mud.
Leather is all Snakebite Leather, again all washed with D Mud.
Metal is mainly Boltgun washed with a mix of Badab Black and D Mud, or plain D Mud.

Hope this is useful?

HG
OK latest additions to my army, 2 Sabretusks:

I'm not a Tiger Stripes fan I'm afraid, so they are done as Lions.
Also not the best pics, must sort that out one day...

C&C welcome

HG
Next in line, my Female Maneater - Juanita! ;)

C&C welcome.

HG
Next one finished, the Paymaster Maneater:

C&C welcome

HG
Looking good and very nice colour schemes well painted :)
Thanks :D
Once I get the next batch of Iron guts finished I'll do an army shot I think.
Should have enough painted for about 2,500 by then.

HG
OK, last one for today! ;)
An alternate Tyrant or Bruiser or Maneater or even Ironguts (have you seen the size of that sword?? )
The model came to me fully made in an eBay purchase, I "roughed up" the sword a bit as it was pristine plasticard and looked too good, I also had to add the pommel bit, but I love this model, looks totally O.T.T!

C&C welcome

HG
Nice Bruiser, I like the aging you did on the sword it really looks like it has seen alot of battle. Keep up the good work.

Keep Calm and Praise the Sun!
Thanks, it definitely needed something doing to it, when I got it it was as if it had just come out of the workshop! LOL
I don't envisage Ogres ever having anything new, do you?
:D

HG
Would you tell me how you got that effect on the sword? Very nice work on the Bruiser!!!
Hi and thanks!
The sword was a flat piece of thick plasticard with a bevel running down both sides of the "sharp edge" when I got it.
All I did was take my hobby knife and cut a few chips into the leading and back edges, not too many mind, and then carved thin parings off the facings in irregular places, took the square edges off the back edge too.
Then black undercoat, thinned boltgun metal base coat and then a Badab Black/Devlan Mud 1:1 mix wash over it all, letting it pool in patches.
Not really that difficult but quite a good effect overall.

Hope this helps?

HG
Ha, Gorbad's shield makes a great addition for sure. The size is definately good. I like it! :)
Ogre Achievements: 38/101
Last one: Stake out, Overpowered!
Is that the shield on his back? I wondered where that was from. It is a great addition.
Came with the mini so I wasn't sure! Thanks!

HG
OK, weekend is over and so here is the finished product! :D

3 more Ogre Bulls:

5 more Ironguts:

And another alternate Tyrant/Bruiser/Maneater with Great Weapon:

C&C welcome!

HG
OK as promised a quick whole army to date shot for you.

Not a brilliant picture but my camera does need updating!
However, this is just under 3000 points and all painted within the last 6 weeks, give or take! :D

C&C welcome

HG
Wow... great quality for such pace!  I also love the fact that it is almost all core and maneaters.  We often focus so much on our specials and rares that we can lose sight of just how impressive it can be to drop 50 ogres on the table...
Ogre Achievements - 26/101 and counting!
this look great.
I certainly wouldn't want to be on the otherside of the table as you placed unit after unit of ogres.
I really like the look of your BSB too....adds a great focal point
My Armies:
Empire
Ogres
Thanks guys.
I do have more of the "good stuff" to come, but felt that unless I have all the Cores done first I would be "cheating" so to speak! LOL
Still on the list of stuff to do are a Hunter, Araby maneater, 6 more Bulls, 6 more Ironguts, 24 more Gnoblars, then 9 Rhinox Riders - (Counts as Mournfangs!), 11 Leadbelchers, 3 Yhetees, 2 Gorgers, a Giant, 2 Butchers, Bragg, Golgfag, Greasus, Skrag, Ironblaster, Scraplauncher and Thundertusk!
So a long, long way to go yet!
Not even half-way out of the 8,000 points approximately! :D

And no, I have no idea why I have that much, save that I am a hobbyist (probably with total OCD!) ;)
I can then add them to the 8k of Space Wolves, the 10K of Orks, the 4k of Night lords and the 4k of Sisters of Battle ......

Me, have a problem??? I don't think so?

HG

OK next model I've been working on is a Gorger.
I have 2 of the GW metal models, but don't much like the fact that I'd have 2 identical minis, plus the pose ain't that good!
So I took one apart and repositioned it and used liquid Greenstuff to build layers over scrap plastic/metal bits which filled in the gaps left by the repositioning!

Here's the pics so far.

I'm probably going to leave the other one as it comes out of the box, so that there is a definite difference between them.

C&C welcome.

HG

Edit: And yes, he might be doing a little dance (or might be leaping forward to eat your bones!) :D
Nice reposing, it gives it a real menacing look as well as saying "I'm about to smack you head clean off your shoulders." Can't wait to see it painted.

Keep Calm and Praise the Sun!
Thanks, I'm just slightly reposing the second one too. I was going to leave it but couldn't face the "Please Sir, may I leave the room" look, so it's also getting a bit of a "make-over"! ;)
Bit of arm bending, bit of filling and straightening of the torso again, nothing quite as drastic as the first one though.
I may get onto the painting later.

HG
OK second Gorger virtually done converting/reposing, just a little GS touch up to do, but have to wait for the last coat to dry fully first!

Here he is:

And here's both of them for comparison, neither one has the GW arm straight up look which is just daft! ;)

(Ignore the paint jobs, that's how I got them!)
C&C welcome.

Painting later! :D

HG
To any MOD's out there!

I'm a bit slow on the uptake, but I have finally realised that this thread should probably be in the Blogs section! D'oh!
Sorry guys.
Could someone move it for me please?

Appreciate it!
Thanks.

HG
Ok first Gorger "finished"?

I fully intended "goring him up" and I know for sure that Franksi will want that, however, having got to this stage I am now undecided.
I went to GW site and their Box art/'Eavy Metal version is similar to mine (and I didn't even check before I painted mine! )

Does he need gore or not?
I've never really gored anything up before and think I'm likely to ruin it if I do.

Opinions very welcome please.

HG
All of your models, on and all, and especially your mass of Tyrants/Bruisers are amazing, it kinda makes me want to try and have a go at making a Tyrant or one themed to my own models, like Aigulf on foot or something.

Since you have a Gorger or Gorgers I'm wondering if you're going to try your hand at Skragg the Slaughterer? Your theme is really good and I think he would fit right in there, since it's a traditional Ogre army. I dunno, Skragg is just kinda a favorite of mine.
Thanks.
I do have the Skragg model and will get round to him sometime!
I've also got the Greasus mini as well, but I'll probably leave the Named Characters until last as I rarely use them.

HG
I'm a fan of gore but it can be easy to go a little over the top. For a gorger though its kinda hard to go over the top.

There are lots of good guides for lots of different types of blood so I'd research it a bit before you go crazy, that way you get the effect you like best.

Good stuff here =D
29/101 Achievements

*Insert emoticon of your choice here*

I've got a lovely bunch of gnoblars *dodo do do* Here they are all sitting in a row!

Thanks, and I've decided to leave it for now and, as you say, research it a bit first!

HG

very good stuff and work, i love this avatars of war mini. the gorger looks good.
i will follow this blog

matt
Thanks.
The AoW mini is really good! Goes very well with the Ogre Kingdoms GW stuff, and is about the size of a Tyrant, more or less.

HG
a very good choice for a tyrant!!!
I am probably going to use him as a Maneater more often, seeing as I have 3 Tyrant minis to choose from already ... and another sitting here in bitz in a baggie! LOL
Actually I may even promote him to Maneater Captain! :D
Or he could be the Maneater Standard Bearer ...
Decisions, decisions..
;)

HG
OK second Gorger finally finished!

And both together showing the differences I managed to get between them!

I'm quite pleased with what I've achieved here, whilst obviously the same basic mini I think there is sufficient difference to make them acceptable as a unit if I want to.

C&C welcome.

HG
Job well done!  8)
Thank you!
:D
Nice modeling for both of them, it really gives them a dynamic pose.

Keep Calm and Praise the Sun!
Thanks.
They're certainly better than the straight GW poses aren't they?
:D

HG
They're certainly better than the straight GW poses aren't they?
I agree with you their, they were one of the models I hoped would have been fixed when the new army book was realeased but they weren't,but hey you dont always get what you hope for especially when it comes to GW.

Keep Calm and Praise the Sun!
...... but hey you dont always get what you hope for especially when it comes to GW.

The perennial cry of the hobbyist everywhere!
:D
LOL

HG
OK next up, 1st Unit of Rhinox Riders (Counts as Mournfangs).
I got these off eBay and they're fairly well built and painted. However, they didn't fit my colour scheme so I have done a repaint and bit of a re-base.
I haven't repainted the fur, which I'm quite happy with! or the shields but they got a wash, as did everything in keeping with my "realism" style of painting. Nothing too bright, shiny and new! LOL
So without further ado:

C&C welcome

HG
nice job

you should paint the "trophy" shield on the rhinox an other color than the one you use for the fur. It will pop a bite more.

Just take what we can eat or make noize with!!!
Thanks, in real life they aren't quite so lost against the fur, but also I don't want them detracting from the focus of the Ogre on the Beast!

As I said, my stuff is "down and dirty" LOL being a realistic approach where nothing is clean on these guys!

HG
Ok worked all day on these and the ones above, so here's the 2nd Unit. Again a repaint from an eBay purchase and as before I haven't touched the fur etc. and the banner was already done too.

C&C welcome

HG
Nice riders the painting is amazing, only wish I could paint better.

Keep Calm and Praise the Sun!
Looks awesome!  :D
Thanks!
Can't take credit for the Rhinox fur/skin painting but the rest is mine! :D
However, I have 3 more which I'm building and painting from scratch, so we'll see whether I can do as well as these in due course, although that might be a while away yet.
Too much other stuff to do, like a scratch-built/kit-bashed Scrap Launcher which has been undercoated .. :D

HG
OK, whole army to date, I haven't yet finished the next 6 Bulls so they'll have to wait for the next Group Hug!
Apologies also for the picture quality, I really don't know what's wrong with my camera, it used to be OK! :(
Whole army to date:

Core - 22 Ogre Bulls:

Core - 21 Iron Guts:

Core - 55 Gnoblars

Special - 6 Rhinox Riders (Counts as Mournfangs)

Special - 6 Maneaters, 2 Gorgers, 2 Sabretusks

Lords and Heroes - 1 BSB, 4 Tyrants/Bruisers

C&C welcome as always

HG
And the next badly photographed mini is the Araby Maneater, Sheik Rattlan-Rowhl himself!

HG
OK next batch - 6 more Ogre Bulls, that's all the Bulls I have now painted.

Should have a Hunter finished later today too, if I get the time.

HG
you are really quick.

What is the size of this army?
Just take what we can eat or make noize with!!!
Wow your work is incredible and the pace at which you churn these awsome minis out is unbeleivable , you have a great talent at this and i envy you ;) im definatly gunna keep an eye on this one :)
we are da executors for a reason you stand in our way ... you die hahaha
Thanks guys, I currently have about 3,600 painted, which is the new ones plus the army shot on the previous page, I have about another 4,000 points left to make and/or paint. :D
Including, the aforementioned nearly finished Hunter, Leadbelchers (11 I think), a Giant (which is on the table following the Hunter), 3 Yhetees, a few more Ironguts (currently in a paint stripping bath), 3 more Rhinox (counts as Mournfang) riders , 30+ more Gnoblars, a Thundertusk, an Ironblaster, a Scraplauncher (nearly finished construction and partly undercoated), 2 Butchers, a Firebelly, Golgfag, Bragg, Greasus and Skrag! :D So lots still to do! :D

And the reason I'm bashing them out is that I'm recovering at home after a minor Op and have nothing to do other than paint stuff and check out my emails whilst listening to music! (I'm ignoring all the housekeeping etc. LOL)

It'll all change when I have to go back to work next Tuesday! :( So I'm making the most of it now. :D

HG
As suggested, the Hunter is finished!
Well, I still have to make a Blood Vulture, but I'll be using the plastic bits from the Stonehorn kit and mounting it on a separate base! (Doesn't count as a mini for games purposes but means I can take one or not and still be WYSIWYG!)

C&C welcome as usual,

HG
Nice job on this one!

If you still have your brush near you, i suggest maybe one or two thin layer of brown/yellow on the skull
Just take what we can eat or make noize with!!!
Thanks for the comments.
In actual fact in real life it's not quite so "white" so I don't think it's a big problem.
But I do know what you mean from the picture! :D

OK now on the Giant. May take a little longer as I've never painted anything quite so large with so much flesh, and it's proving not as easy as these little guys! ;)

HG
So, here's my Giant! :D

And the obligatory "squashed Gnoblar" shot!

Now I can pack up and get some sleep! :D

C&C welcome, as usual!

HG
Nice giant but, the straps could use a different color for some contrast. All in all it is an excellent paint job.

Keep Calm and Praise the Sun!
Excellent blended skin!
My hood is my castle...
Thanks guys.

Goretooth, I assume you mean the straps on the leggings? I was thinking about that myself actually and may well do something about that. Just a slightly lighter shade of brown would probably do it I think. It'll get washed with Devlan Mud again anyway which will bring it back down again.

HG
Great army- I especially love the hunter!
Thanks,
Just redid the straps on the leggings and it does definitely look a little better!
I may get round to some new pics later.

HG
Aweseome work mate, I really like the toned down colours.
Thanks.

This has been a deliberate policy throughout my Ogre army as I like the "realism" of grubby basic toned-down colours on my work. (My 40k Orks are very similar in approach).

With so much flesh showing on all the models there is little need for any other bright colours to be honest.

An occasional splash of colour, like on some of the the Maneaters, for example, gives a distinction between them and the rank and files, but for the most part I want a grubby uniformity across the army tying it together! And I certainly think I've got that so far! LOL

HG
I think that you have nailed the realistic theme perfectly! It is always a fine line between realism and grittiness because of the similarities of color pallet. I really like how these minis look, the hunter especially! I do however agree that the giant need something more as it looks a tad unfinished compared to the rest. I think painting the straps and giving it a very light highlight on some places would make it pop a bit more.
Excellent work on the Giant, well the whole lot really, and not a mold line in sight  :>)
Ogre Achivements 10/101
Thanks.

I have redone the straps on the leggings and it does help a bit.
On another forum a friend suggested that more colour and maybe spot colours would work well. Whilst I would normally agree, for Ogres our Giants are slaves, correct? Now why would any self-respecting Tyrant let a slave giant wear more colourful and respectable clothing than him? ;)
Hence the beaten-up old leather for legging and loin cloths.
See, it was a deliberate choice and not just an "I have the Scorched Brown paint pot in my hand, sod it, it's all going to be the same colour!" approach after all! ;)

I do try and remove all  the mould lines completely. There are one or two small ones that get by me on occasion, but my eye gets drawn to them immediately when looking at a mini and therefore it spoils my appreciation of them, no matter how good the rest of the work is.

HG
Love the spell markers, gonna steal that idea!
http://juggersgarage.blogspot.com/
Thanks Jugger! :D

OK next batch!
2 units of 3 Leadbelchers. (Or 1 of 6, of course!)

1st Unit

2nd Unit:

And now to the controversy! ;)
I have painted 2 Butchers, let's call them Pat and Frank, and I have painted them clean so far! I.e. no gore!
Now I realise that this just isn't very typical, even less so than on the Gorgers!
The trouble I have is that I've painted them to the best of my ability and don't want to "ruin" them by plastering blood red (or the equivalent realistic blood mix!) all over them!
What do you think?

C&C welcome.

HG
I agree that pat and frank are painted great and it would be a shame to cover that awsome paint job up so here is what i want to remind you and others on this forum , which is that the great thing about warhammer is that you can paint your models however you want them and it doesnt matter what other people think as long as YOU are happy with the out come :) and so it doesnt matter if the butchers not caked in red paint is "unconventional" if its what YOU want then its what YOU should do , its different for everyone :)
we are da executors for a reason you stand in our way ... you die hahaha
Thanks, I must admit I'm tempted to leave them "clean".
But something at the back of my mind is egging me on, so once I pluck up enough courage to "wreck" my paint job, I will give one of them a gore splatter and see what it looks like, if it does ruin it, well, it's only one of two to repaint eh? ;)

HG
Why not practice gore on somthing not so well painted or even just abit of sprue or spare parts?
Ogre Achivements 10/101
That's a possibility, I could use an unpainted Ork for practice, I have a few of them! LOL
Good suggestion there!

HG
Be subtle if you apply blood effect, if you ask me.

To many looked like them took at bath in a pool of blood and while they might have, it removes the actual effect of blood splatter and grime.
My hood is my castle...
Thanks, yeah I'm not even sure where he came from, he's metal and was just lying in my bitz box! But he certainly adds to the random and potentially fatal air to the Scrappie! :D

I am making my Firebelly straight from the blister as intended, which means making the best of it.
I'm up to undercoat stage after filling as many gaps and holes as i could see. The black undercoat hides a multitude of sins and I won't know really how good a job I've made until I start the painting, which may not be until next weekend - damned working long hours! :(

HG
Your scrapluancher and Yhetees look really good! Nice job!

Chris

Thanks! :D
The next test of my skills will be painting the Firebelly!

I will need to think how to paint the fire reflections and also the tattoos, neither of which I've tried so far!
Will be interesting, if nothing else! :D

HG
will need to think how to paint the fire reflections
That is very difficult to get to look good. (At least for me)

Chris

Need you army painted? Visit www.CMSheatspainting.com for all of our prices and contact info.
I may limit it to reflections off the metal face mask and use some old inks I have to give the metal a coloured sheen. :D

The "easy" way out! LOL
Ok for the fans amongst you, Mr T gets his Bling! :D

This is the smallest chain I could get and it's totally OTT, which works well on him! :D

HG
LOL! That's awesome...

LOL
It actually looks even better in real life!
Can't wait to field him again in a few weeks for the looks on my opponents face when they see him leading his unit! LOL

HG
Lovely Ogres mate. I would put some gore on the butcher though, he looks naked! However do whatever you feel comfortable with.

All in all a great army!
Thanks.

I may go back and add extras to them all when I have finished painting the still unmade/unpainted stuff.
Still quite a bit of that and not having had any spare time lately means I haven;t progressed very much at all.

I plan to do tattoos on them all and glyphs the banners, so I might add gore at that point.

HG
Wow!
So long since I added anything to this Blog!

I haven't yet got any pictures but last night I finally started painting my Firebelly, nearly 10 months after I said I would! :)
So I've dredged up my Blog in order to start adding stuff again as I go through the remaining outstanding "stuff"! :D

I am going to try and get as close to the "official" paint job on the GW site, as I have not much experience in the flames/fire effect, and especially the OSL effects, which I will attempt once he's fully painted "normally"!

Wish me luck and keep an eye out for some updates with pics in due course! :D

HG
For OSL stuff I really like what an airbrush can do.. give it a go if you have access to one.

Mr. T is sweet.. You need to model up a van, flintstones style, and play it as a stonehorn and just ram it into people!
I don't have an airbrush, unfortunately, so I'll see how I do with inks.

And what a brilliant idea for a Stonehorn! LOLOL

HG
Ok so the van idea HAS to happen. Genius. Cold effect is noxious fumes from the engine etc. mr T model is hilarious too!

OK, first PIP pictures of the Firebelly.
Base coats on and some fire work.
Nowhere near finished yet, but it's a start!

C&C welcome

HG
OK, I've finished him, well as far as I'm going to go for now anyway. I haven't done any tattoos, but as I haven't done any on my other Ogres yet, they'll come later!

C&C welcome.

HG
Fantastic job as always. Fire is incredibly tough so I'm always impressed when someone gets it right. It does look a little bare without any tattoos/art etc but I forgive you as you'll add it late ;)

Thank you very much!
I was worried that the fire wasn't "realistic" enough. Do you think it works OK?

Also this was my first attempt at doing any OSL, albeit in a fairly subdued way. I'm not convinced I got it right either. It's not the easiest of things to achieve! :(

Any comments or critiques on this would be much appreciated.

HG
Yeah looks great! I'm always in awe of OSL so find it difficult to objectively criticise having never tried it myself. But in my untrained opinion it looks fantastic everywhere except the arm, where it is lot in odd places, the metal looks especially good OSL. But that's just my opinion! :)

Thanks, the arm was my main concern too.
Ok I'll have a "hack" at that later tonight.

My mate pointed out I hadn't tidied the edge of the base either! ;)
Guess I was just too eager to show off! LOL

HG
Was "pigeon from hell" a Robert E. Howard reference!?
Enough words. Witness...
Not really, it just fitted perfectly! :D
My sense of humour I'm afraid!

Ha! nice. That's one pigeon I wouldn't want crapping on my head!
