Making Big Names Worthwhile

original thread ↗

I have nothing better to do so here's a list of ammendments to the Big Names to make me consider taking the damn things.

Mawseeker: change to 25 points and remove "tyrants only"

Wallcrusher: change "one additional" to "D6"

Kineater: change to 20 points and remove "tyrants only"

Mountaineater: change to 15 points

Giantbreaker: change to 20 points

Deathcheater: change to "once per turn, at the start of the turn, the Deathcheater can force all "to-wound" rolls against him to be re-rolled until the end of the player turn."

Longstrider: change to "A character with the Longstrider big name has Swiftstride special rule."

Beastkiller: change to 40 points and "A character with Beastkiller has Heroic Killing Blow providing he is not using a magic weapon or a Blood Vulture."

Brawlerguts: change to 30 points and "Brawlerguts (but not their mounts) re-roll failed To Wound rolls in the first round of combat (including their impact hits).
I think maybe Mawseeker should be at least 35 points.  Even the 40 wouldn't be so bad if they just dropped the "Tyrants only".  Going from T3-T4 isn't such a big deal, but going from T5-T6 is pretty massive.

The rest you listed I kind of liked.  Although a good start for the book would have been if they just didn't limit bignames to 1 per army, then I would take it much more frequently as it currently is.
There is only news.  There is no good or bad.
At 35 points I still wouldn't take it. Maybe if it was not "tyrants only" and you could take more than one per army. T6 is good - but a 4+ ward is better in all cases. It needs to be significantly cheaper than 45 points for me to consider it. That's without Stupidity. Maybe 25 is too cheap but not more than 30 for sure.
30 points for Mawseeker and remove Tyrant only.

Even then, I still won't take a Tyrant, although it would be a nice bit of protection for a BSB.

But prehaps the biggest change would be making Big Names not come out of your magic item allowance.

Addendum to Tyrant and Bruiser entries,

"A Tyrant may choose any number of Big Names worth up to a total of 100 points"

"A Bruiser may choose any number of Big Names worth up to a total of 50 points"

Even with no changes to the names themselves, this would actually make them viable.

I disagree. The names would be spammed on a bunch of heroes. Also, I think that a good start would be for lords to take two big names instead of 1.
Facing ogres is like facing an avalanche.

If only the big names were like the vampire counts Vampiric Powers, they are seperate from the magic point allowance and you can take however many you like as long as it is within the 100pt(Lords) or 50pt(Heros)limit.

I think it is necessary for our big names to come out of our magic allowance.  The reason vampires get extra powers is because they are suppose to be some of the scariest characters in the game, and let's face it without their characters they can't really win.

We can still pull a win through if we've lost all our characters (might not be easy but possible).

Ogres are INFINITLY more scary then Vampires.

The Vampire just wants to drink your blood, the Ogre wants to eat every last part of you.

And the worst part about it is that the Ogre is completely amoral. its just hunting you, like you would a deer.

The Vampire has actual malice and is completly unnatural. The ogre is just doing whats natural to it.

The natural order is much more scary then the unnatural.

That's like comparing a Viking to a Samurai.  True the ogre has more of a natural scariness about him and brute strength, but in a fight I'd probably give it to the vampire, they've got skillz and speedz (not to mention the precision of a surgeon 8)).

P.S.  I would LOVE to see a viking pitted against a samurai, i think that might make it into my list of EPIC duels along with Cyclops Vs. Peter Pan. :P

I vote for the viking, although the samuri would probably put up a good fight.

Deadliest warrior already did Samurai vs Viking. The Samurai won, but then got his posterior handed to him by a Sparten.

People are actually throwing these things together in the ring?  I MUST FIND THIS!!!!!

I assume deadliest warrior is a series (discovery?).  I don't really watch a lot of TV, when I'm bored I read or cruise around on my PC.

Yeah, its a TV show. Its on Spike.

Not the most accurate from a historical or scientific point of view, but it is fun to watch.

its on Netflix instant watch.

Thank goodness someone else recognizes that their facts are not always correct.

My favorite "lawz" moment was the Jesse James Gang vs the Prohibition Gangsters episode.

"Hurrr, 6-shooters are better then Tompsons!!!"

To me the most inaccurate episode was the ninja vs. spartan. Mainly for one reason, I have never seen a ninja fight in broad daylight in close quaters fighting. That was a sad moment when they did that.

How many ninjas have you seen fight?  :?
How many ninjas have you seen fight?  :?
Plenty of times, they have infested every dark nook and cranny in my house. You have to b just as sneeky as them though if you want to observe them in thier natural habitat.

To be fair, the Ninja really didn't even belong on the show because its all about straight up man to man fights.

Man to man, the Ninja obviously gets squished by just about anything. But thats because they arn't supposed to fight man to man. They are back stabbers and assassins, not warriors.

If a Samurai corners a Ninja, its over for that poor Ninja unless he's got an escape route.

Of course, with a ninja maneater, things change...  :)

Their gag-episode (well, more of a gag than usual) of vampires vs zombies was pretty epic.  The ways in which they 'tested' the abilities of a zombie or vampire were hysterical.
