Thanks to this thred the idea of using 6 Scouting Maneaters with the Dragonhide Banner has raised in my mind. I need to try it

O_o, is the breath weapon magical?
Yes. I know it was stated earlier in the thread, but I'd just like to repeat the answer with the quoted question. Indeed the FAQ states what constitutes a magical attack, and attacks from a magic item (in this case a breath weapon) are considered magical attacks.

Around the local scene here the DHB Breath Weapon is accepted as magical. I just posted this bit in another thread;
Q: What are magical attacks? (p68) A: All attacks made by spells and magic items are considered to be magical attacks, as are all attacks that are specifically noted as being magical attacks. Shots fired from magical items are also considered to be magical attacks, unless their description specifically states otherwise. Hits inflicted by rolls on the Miscast table are treated as magical attacks.
Dragonhide Banner is a magic item, thus, magical Breath Weapon hits.
We now have 3 Vampire Counts players in our local gaming club, so my Ogres need all the help they can get against those ethereal paininthegnoblars...
You two just made my day, cheers for this!
I'm going to go and re-check the FAQ now, but would this be any president for saying that the attacks made fro mthe transformation of khadon (number 6 beasts spell) are magical?
It's not an attack made by a spell directly, but it's an attack made by something made by a spell.... :S

c) they benefit greatly from the extra CR from the breath weapon & rerolls because (relatively) they have a small number of attacks and a wiffed round of combat can be bad.
problem, is that you cant chose to use your Breath after wiffing your attacks, since everything is made at the same initiative

I know, you use the breath weapon and swing. If you would have wiffed your swings the breath weapon will help it equal out. If you don't wiff your attacks it's more CR for you and thats never a bad thing.
Stubborn xhw/GW MEs don't need to that type of insurance for example.

If one were not running Mournfangs, what unit would be a runner up for the Dragonhide Banner? Would it be advisable to run the banner on a unit of Maneaters with Swiftstride, or would the points be spent better elsewhere? Would using the Dragonhide Banner or Standard of Discipline be more useful on a unit of Ironguts?
I really can't fathom not running a unit of Mournfangs.
If I had to guess, it would either be Ironguts or a BSB in a unit of Ogres. The rerolling ones will help their attack and wounding rolls pretty decently.
It's not ideal either way. Mournfangs were made for the DHB.

Silly question here and it's probably going to be a no but if you have dhb in a unit that charges with a fire belly and you use his breath weapon can you reroll his hit dice if they are a 1?
ogreama09 Feb 2012
No, you can't. To wound, yes. Also, to the above, this banner is stellar with IG's and a Firebelly with a Potion of Speed. Your I5 Breath Weapon should be on par with most infantry initiative out there. This is what I use as a Mournfang Replacement Unit. (MRU)

I know a lot of people rave about how good Mournfangs are and they hit hard.
However opponents will change their Meta game to deal with large numbers of these and each model only has 3 wounds. So Lore of Metal could hurt them pretty badly as do cannons (not allowing armour saves).

Cannons we can deal with. Our versions are nicer.

If people are taking Lore of Metal specifically to deal with Mournfangs then I find that awsome. it means they don't have Purple Sun or Mindrazor. My Mournfangs will be sacrifical lambs while I destroy his army unopposed.
I had a game where my Mournfangs got demolished by DoomDivers and a Mangler Squig, but everything else made it unscathed and I rolfstomped my way to victory.
And Iblasters kill cannons so we don't have to worry about them(and only getting max 1 hit on a unit makes Mournfangs not the ideal target)

Dragonhide Banner is best in a Gutstar or with Large scouting Maneater unit.
Mournfang units are best kept cheap.

It would be nice if someone did the Maths Hammer on using the Dragonhide with equivalently costed units eg: -
1. 4 Mournfangs with IF's 2. 5 Maneaters HA, XHW, Poison & Stubborn 3. 6 IG's 4. 9 Ogres with IF's
Assuming 4 Wide Ogre charge < 10" ,average rolls, includes impact & stomp, Fangs,ME, IG have Dragonhide Banner,No other command, I didn't include the hits for the banner itself as that is equal to ~2.3 wound no matter the unit.

Now the numbers don't really tell the whole story.. Maneaters can have an extra special ability and higher Initiative and leadership. Ironguts and Ogre make better bunkers for characters, the list goes on and on. The numbers really point to balance within the book as each unit fills different rolls within the army.
Personal with the addition of the VC book I put the Dragonbanner with the Mourfangs as it gives them a magic attack if needed and vs non-etherals ASL of the banner a better used as a de-buff to prevent being charged than using it in combat for an extra few wounds.
Sorry for the math but that is what you get from an engineer that is bored at work
grey templar09 Feb 2012
so maneaters cause more wounds with it, but Mournfangs are a more effecient point cost for the wounds they do cause.
Not to mention I believe the potential damage of the Mournfangs is substantionally higher.
4 mournfangs can potentially cause 12 Str4 attacks and 32 Str5 attacks. granted that 16 of those str5 attacks will autohit, but its still a higher potential.

Frankly, I'd love to have the enemy's cannons targeting my Mournfang Cavalry. 1/6 chance of a misfire, 1/6 chance of the ball sticking, 1/6 chance of not wounding, 1/3 chance of not doing three wounds. Add to that the chance of the ball not reaching the riders and you're looking at a less than 50% chance of a cannon killing a single model. I can live with those odds.

No, the Mournfangs cause more wounds (a total of 20,67).

Interesting Statistics
So if I am reading this right if you lose a Mournfang before they get to strike (from higher Initiative opponents) you will lose 5 potential wounds from the Mournfang charge. Though Impact hits will go first.

Kinda, Impact hits arn't lost.
And if anything is able to reliably kill a Mournfang before it swings then its probably not something you should be charging with them.
Str5 attacks are bad, avoid!

Remember with a save of 2+/6+ the banner is excellent to keep them alive as well (unless you get mauled by high STR).
