Monthly Painting Challenge - ((February 2012))

original thread ↗

After such a great showing in January I hope to see even more painted minis this month! You only have until the 10th to make your pledges and get painting.

Its the :maw: February Painting Challenge! :maw:
Just joining in? The idea is, you make a promise to paint and/or convert a given number of models at the beginning of the month, and report back with your progress, if and when you manage to complete it. From here on out we will refer to this as your "Pledge"!

The Rules:

  • All Pledges will be frozen After the 10th Day of the Month. There is no changing of *any* pledge after day 10. Pledges are still accepted after the 10th of the month, but they can not be changed once they are made.
  • When you finish your pledge you will be rewarded by the bronzing of your name on the List of pledges below. If you would like You can then go on to add a Bonus pledge and look really impressive. However, your name can not be bronzed before the freezing of the Pledges on the 10th. Any additions to your pledge made before the 10th go onto your initial pledge and will not count as a Bonus pledge.
  • We need to know The number of Models when you post your pledge. 3, 8, 10, or even 100.. Saying "A unit" is not acceptable..
*Please* post The progression of your work ((pictures if at all possible)). One of the best things about this thread is watching everyone's work come together. It's perfectly fine if you don't post any photos, however. Feel free to make separate posts, and then link into this thread so that others can comment directly in your own thread in the Butchers Cauldron or your Gnoblog.

FAQ
Q: So I can Only do Ogre Kingdoms or GW Minis, for my pledge?
A: No. There isn't anything stopping you from building and/or painting anything you like, However this the Ogre Stronghold, I think most of us would prefer to see Ogre models. If you're working on one of your other Armies, and/or any other Models please feel free to make a Pledge.

Q: I need to change my Pledge!
A: well.. You have until the 10th day of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There may be small prizes awarded for photographic evidence, but you really only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?
A: That's the goal... We'll do one of these close to the beginning of every month...

Q: What if I finish my pledge but decide to do more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's not as big of an accomplishment  to make a pledge with 75% of the project painted at the start of the month...  That's not to say that sometimes the last 25% of the project your working on is not more than worth being a pledge of its own..

Q. I have not completed my Pledge for the past few months, should I still enter?
A. You bet! The idea behind a painting challenge is to develop some discipline as to what you're going to build or paint. Part of the challenge is to learn what you can complete within a given month, and what you can't. If you find you're not able to complete your pledge for the month, then reduce the size of it.

Q. What if I get my Pledge done early?
A: Well, if you get it done early, you can try to make a Bonus pledge where you can add an additional challenge only after the existing work is completed. No bonus prizes to be won, but you will get the respect of everybody. Additionally, this can be a way to make sure you don't overdue your original pledge..

Extra incentive: I will be awarding :gnoblar: to those who complete their pledge and post photographic evidence here in this thread. I'll also be awarding an extra :gnoblar: to the one pledgee who posts the most WIP photos!

Think of it as a magic glove, like Michael Jackson use to wear, you could even model your character up grabbing at his crotch.

I pledge to paint 4 ogres and 12 leadbelchers.
Facing ogres is like facing an avalanche.

My buddy doesn't have time for our planned painting challenge, so I was stoked when I found out about this (only took me half a year  )

Thanks a bunch Randroid! Gnoblar inbound for the great initiative :)

I pledge to paint three Maneaters and my Chaos Dwarf K'daai Destroyer
Last month was a wash because of the flooding in my house, but this month, I am going to catch up big time!

With one model

Deathlore slaughtermaster

only one? yup! I have never finished a pledge, and it has discouraged me, so this month I will paint one model REALLY well.
Gnoblar big game trophy rack:
Manticore        Lord of Change    Beastlord
Chaos Lord     Warsphinx            Bray Shaman
OK, with two tournaments in Feb, I have some tight deadlines! I pledge to finish my Stonehorn and Hunter, base them and the Mournfangs I did last month, and for the end of the month I hope to re-convert my second Ironblaster so it has a more impressive cannon and paint that too.

Lots to do!

The answer to everything is sabretusks.  There is no problem that can't be solved at least in part with kitties.

I had a great January so I'll try to match that in February. What I put here is what should be finished this month, I'm not bothering with stuff I should get built, converted, started on etc.

1 Ahab the Whaler on Sea-Devil (done Feb 1st)
8 Ironguts
1 Theodore Bruckner on Demigryph
1 Scraplauncher

I'm tempted to add more ... things are going well so far and Shadowlord pledged more than me already!

I guess it's a bit besides the point to put my commission work in here....? :S It's what steals my time away from my Ogre army! (10Empire Knights, 25 daemonettes, 'thirster, tzeench herald on disc, slaanesh herald, jugger bsb, 4 tomb king char's cloaks, possibly some blood angels, busy month but I will try and make it, at least there's no new 40k/fantasy releases!)

I r pledges 1xthundertusk, like dreadboi's but not as good... :| with one pretty base - not riders/top bits though.

Good thing I've got a second one after this to try and improve on!

Also I will sculpt GS teeth on 8 mournfang      #eeuurgh.

I'm going for quite a pathetic pledge I am afraid - I pledge to paint Golgfag Maneater.  That's it....one model - sorry for being useless but is one more than January!

As Barney Stinson would say...."Challenge Accepted!"

I will be participating in my first paint challenge this month. It will be to pant the pants and and weapons of all my current models (a battalion box). The current state of my models is only primed and the boots have been painted black.  I'll certainly add atleast pictures of the state of the models at the end of my month to my gnoblog if not before.

OK. Getting started tonight with about 2 hours to spend on these guys:

Three ogres and a crusher for the unit.
Facing ogres is like facing an avalanche.

Sorry, I messed up. I only need to paint 2 ogres and the crusher! I found one in my bag.
Facing ogres is like facing an avalanche.

Sorry, I'll still paint 4 so I don't have double musician in my ogre horde.
Facing ogres is like facing an avalanche.

Meet my ogre horde! Hopefully I can paint the other ogre tomorrow so I don't have a double bellower in it. 3/4 ogres (including crusher) done.
Facing ogres is like facing an avalanche.

Seeing how I went so close last month (given I built, based and undercoated my entire ogre army during the first two weeks of January) I'm going to set the modest target of painting 10 ironguts:

Started the metals on them last night.
AMMOBUNKER.ORG
A HOBBY FORUM WITH HUMOUR!
Finish 6 Mournfang (Ogre skin, Rhinox skin, metal and random bits left)
Finish 1 Thundertusk (Ogre skin, metal and random bits left)
Finish 1 Ironguts Champion (pants left)

Paint 30 Gnoblars (i don't like it, but i have to for a tournament on March 3rd-4th).
My Blog
Thought I'd try and join in this month.
I'm still awaiting my ogres arrival in the post. But what I do have is 5 ogre heads and soon some greenstuff.
I plan to convert all 5 heads - think Master Rhino. This is quite ambitious for me as I'll also be new to green stuff.
My Armies:
Empire
Ogres
I pledge to finish my 8 leadbelchers this month.  Magnetize and square up the sides of 41 more bases for a huge basing project.

I am starting a huge project of lava bases.  I loved the ones I did so much I decided to add 41 more.  All magnetized for movement trays and to be able to switch out models on each base as wanted.  The theme will be a lava river that goes with my tribes theme of eating the heart of the mountain they live in.  The centerpiece of the whole formation will be a throne for my tyrant made out of the heart of the mountain that is bleeding lava to form a river.

Here is the prelim pics of how I will set it up.  And yes, there will be ogres walking in and on lava.

I am setting it up so the breaks and patterns on the left side of the square can line up with the right side so I can mix and match the bases as needed.  The white paper on the top shows where the beach will be and all the center will be a lava river with debris floating down it and burning for the ogres to stand on.   The white piece of paper in the center will be where my tyrant's throne sits and feeds the river.  For this month I plan on getting all of them magnetized and square up the sides so there is no bevel and they sit flush like I did on the first 8.
