Tobogres (A yet unamed tribe!)

original thread ↗

A gnoblog by Tobgoblin!

A long time ogre stronghold lurker, old 7th ed. ogre player which have just gotten back to WHFB with the new edition.

-About me-
I have played WHFB and other miniature battle games since I was a kid, I think 14-15 years or so. The first time I took fantasy seriously was during the 6th ed. when I started my high elf army. Before then I havent had much more than small scattered armies.

Along came 7th and gave me a new book which I didn't like. ASF was dandy and all but I always preferred to play the underdog so a top tier book wasn't something I craved. So after a while I decided to switch to ogres and all their underdog glory in 7th ed.

I have since then been off the game for a while and returned now we got a new book and painting my ogres looks like a fun project.

At our local club we are a group of four people that have played countless miniature battle games. Two hardcore WHFB players, me somewhat experienced and a player who have barely touched the game but is one fine modeller/painter.

We decided about a month ago to actually play a campaign in which we paint up 250p of troops each month and gather to face eachother while playing on a mighty empires map. I will keep posting here because I like to share my work. Also, wildcards added "ogre achievements" was too much to resist so I just had to go for it. ;)

My plan is to do at least some green stuff work on each ogre and try to individualize them. Besides I just hate how the back of the models musculature was sculpted so anything to cover it up would be good heh.

-The Tribe-
I have based the tribe on the idea that my ogres are slavetraders. They use slaves as currency, food and cannon fodder. I pretty much decided to replace my gnoblars with slaves, explaining their low strength with them being unarmed and explaining loyalty with adding slavehandler humans into the mix. I have many ideas and hopefully they will see fruition during my blogging here.
Color schemes are nothing set. I like the idea of mixing colors within ogre ranks. Hopefully it wont look to cluttered. I will try it out and if I dont like it I can just repaint later. Only thing Im sure of is that Im going with a human flesh tone for skin.

I'm not sure on what I will call the tribe but The Slave Eaters is the first draft. Might get changed later.

I've just finished my first 250p. The guys in at the club were nice and let me "cheat" using 51% special and letting a unit champ be general. The 250p would otherwise just contain a gut unit and some tusks and tbh I would find that boring to play with.
The list is as follows:

3 Ogres - Ironfists, Standard, Champion

3 Leadbelchers

250p

The artists formerly known as Bulls!:

The leadburpers:

These were due the 10th of December and as you can see I made it in time with them so I decided to start up my next batch right away. Good thing with ogres is that its not a lot of models each batch. The next models are due 7th of January but since I've pledged in the butchers cauldron I will try to have them done before december ends.

The planned list for 500p is:

Bruiser - Ironfist, Sword of Striking

5 Ogres - Ironfists, Standard, Champion, Bellower

3 Leadbelchers - Bellower

Sabretusk

Sabretusk

I know some will scream about how I should get a firebelly instead of a bruiser but my plan is to run a list with a tyrant in the end so the bruiser will later get upgraded to a tyrant. I just like the idea of having the "same" general in the force over the whole campaign. Besides we try to keep our lists "nice" (totally its own meta-game in our club). My next characer purchase at 1000p will probably be a firebelly though.

Thanks man! Yeah I like how their basing turned out.

The stones are easy. After Im done with the messy part of the brown I pick out every bigger rock on the base with adeptus battlegrey. Then I take an cover all visible areas minus some lower crevices with codex grey. To finish I give it a somewhat wet drybrush with fortress grey.

Cheers mate, much appreciated :)
I've always struggled with greys, especially rocks. I've been painting stones obsidian/onyx-ish, just to avoid grey :P
Love the Look, and indeed the bases are top notch! any new work as of late?

Ask and ye shall recieve! ;)

Nah, just had a hard time getting down to my local club for picture taking lately but behold! I've done some more.

My 500p force is done and here you have the last of my december pledge (which I managed in time but didn't have time to take pictures of), a bruiser (soon to be tyrant) and two sabretusks, as well as a bellower and an additional ogre for my unit. The last part of my january pledge, just three ironguts to go there but have a lot of green stuff work to do.

The bruiser and two tusks:

Two more bulls for the unit:

Sadly it doesn't show in these pictures that I've added a cloak to the bruiser in the style of the chaos warrior ones as well as a little slave girl with a dagger to his base. The bellower got a comicly large weapon but I think they turned out fine.

The whole 500p force so far:

Oh don't mind the unit banner, it is far from done. I'm saving the banners for the last part of the campaign so I can paint them as a full batch when I've decided what to put on them.

Sadly I had planned a battle report for the first battle we fought in the campaign but my notes and pictures got lost so can't really do anything about it. However, this saturday is our next battle meeting and hopefully I will have a battle report of the 500p armies for you guys. No idea what opposition I will have though. It will be either dark elves, beastmen or chaos dwarfs. Only time will tell.

Speaking of which, there really should be an achievement for beating the new chaos dwarfs in our achievement list. ;) *hint, hint*

Would you mind sharing how you painted the sand on your bases, they look great?!
For the dirt.

Basecoat Scorched Brown heavily diluted with water.
Then wetbrushed with bestial brown.
Finish off with a wet drybrush with deneb (sp?) stone.

It's as easy as that ;)

The mace isn't that large, I think it looks good. (Might be the reason I've made my champ with it :P )

Might I ask where you've got those wolves? They look sweet :)

Dire Wolves from Gamezone, linked them in the alternate sabretusk topic.
However, they are about the same price and needs a ton of green stuffing cracks, however I took em as I thought they looked sweet in comparison and haven't looked back yet. Only gripe is that there is only four different types of them and the howling one looks a bit "too" specific.

Finally I have been able to photograph my latest work and my 5 ironguts that I've added will be shown!

-The Ironguts-

-The full force so far-

The painting campaign I'm in just past 750p and we're currently working on our 1000p forces. For these 750p I've decided to add a firebelly, a leadbelcher and a gorger. The firebelly will be pretty much straight out of the box since I like his look. The belcher will be a bitmash to try to create a bellower for the unit that has more than his mouth open. Finally the gorger will be built as an enslaved cyclops which I will create out of the plastic minotaur kit.

I have also played a few games in the campaign but nothing to write a report about. At these point levels its pretty much a board wipe either way. Luckily so far I've won the games I've taken part of, except for one. However, I have a game due against the chaos dwarfs taking part of the campaign and from the looks of it he has added a magma cannon to his force and I think that will be a hard nut to crack....

Great solid looking painting with great solid looking troops.

The style that you have painted them in along with the wolves really suits the terrain (and vice versa!)-was this deliberate or just a lucky fluke? ;P

Unpretentious straightforward good old Ogre stuff, and I also like the mace!
Well seeing how Im one of the guys in our club making/painting terrain it was a bit unavoidable. ;)

Thanks a lot for the nice comment. The painting is far from top notch but I figured I would paint them to good tabletop standard and once I finished I can revisit them for detail work.
