2k Vs Skaven: First go with the new book

original thread ↗

Hey hey,

So I've eventually got a game in with the new book.  Played at 2k against skaven.

My list:
Slaughtermaster, Lv4, Fencers Blades, Giant Breaker, Dispel Scroll, Dragonbane Gem, Rock Eye (General, goes with IGs)
Firebelly, Hellheart, Greatweapon (goes with Bulls)
Bruiser (corrected typo), BSB, Sword of Strife, HA, IF, Ironcurse Icon, Potion of Speed (goes with IG)

7 Ironguts,  Full Command, Lookout, Standard of Discipline
5 Bulls, IF, Full Command, Lookout

4 Mourn-fang Carvery with Standard bearer and Banner of Eternal Flame
4 Leadbelchers with musician
3 Leadbelchers with musician

Iron-blaster

His list was roughly:
Gray-Seer on Bell (in clan rats)
BSB with the Leadership scewing banner (clan rats)
2 Warlock Engineers, both Lvl 2 (1 in clan rats, 1 in slaves)
Plague Priest Lvl 1 (in Monks)

Huge unit of Clan rats (about 50) with warp fire thrower
About 30 Slaves
Unit of 2 rat swarms

20 Plague Monks with re roll everything in combat banner.

Doom Wheel
Warp lightening Cannon

The table had a temple of skulls and small building near the middle and a number of woods jotted about.

He deployed mostly centrally with everything clustered around the Clan rats + bell unit.  the only except being the wheel off on one flank to go hunting mournfangs.

I deloyed my mournfangs to my left with the small unit of leadbelchers and the Iron blaster.  The other three unit deployed centrally: Bulls, IGs, Leadbelchers.

Turn 1: Orges
I won the dice for first turn and chose to take it to try and up close and personal quickly.
Leadies, bulls and IGs marched forward.  Mournfangs hung back to keep away from the Wheel and hopefully set up a charge on it next turn.  The Iron Blaster set itself up for a shot on the wheel.
Magic basically consisted of me drawing out his dispell scroll (nothing got though).
Shooting the Iron-blaster take out the Wheel (much to my delight)

Skaven:
With his wheel gone and my army just out of comfortable charge range, his chose to basically sit still.
Magic: a scroll and some descend dispel dice saw another uneventful magic phase.
Shooting, The Warplightening cannon got a good shot nuking 3 Ironguts, but the warpfire thrower whiffed.

Turn 2: Orges
Without any realistic charges bulls, IGs and Mourn-fangs marched forward.
Leadies killed 2 rat between them and the Ironblaster manages to blow off his own gun.  The Firebelly used his breath weapon on the big unit of rats, hitting 16 but only killing 3!!!
A roll a 3 for winds of magic and 3 channels for him, saw nothing happening in the magic phase.

Skaven
His Plague Monks charged my Bulls and his Rat swarm positioned itself infount of my Guts to prevent charges.
Magic saw the hell-heart do its thing.  25" range meant all 4 caster where hit.  A total of 2 dead clan rats and a wound on grey seer didn't seem great (for 4 miscasts), but he lost all his power dice so I couldn't complain.
His shooting failed to to much, just causing a wound to the IG unit.
With their banner and some nice dice my bulls got beaten up (taking 6 wounds and only killing the priest in return).  They ran, but got away and the Monks slammed into the side of my IGs.

Turn 3: Orges
My big unit of Lead-belchers rear charges the Monks (currently engaged with the IG unit).
The Mourn-fangs charge the Fire thrower which promptly flees, and fail their Ld to redirect.
The Iron-blaster and small unit of Leadies move up the field.
Magic I managed to get off AoE troll guns, but miscast, lose a level and forget the spell!
No shooting.
Combat sees the Monks wiped out and my Guts and leadies reforming to face the Bell unit.

Skaven
As expected the Bell charges the leadies, also the Rat swarm charges the IGs to try and hold them in place.
The magic phase is thankfull uneventfull as his see fails to cast firestorm (or whatever the everyone is 12" takes pain spell is called), leaving me with plenty of dispel dice to stop the rest of his spells.
His Warp lightening cannon whiffs again, yeah!
Combat goes great: he only causes 5 wounds on the Leadies (thanks to regen).  Given the inevitable lost combat I pill all 9 return attacks into the Seer and kill the blighter!!!  Then they roll Insane Courage and don't even run away!  My opponent is not amused.
The IG wipes the rat swarms.

Turn 4: Orges
The Bell held in place means I now combi-charge with the Mournfangs, Iron-blaster and IGs.  The other unit of Bellies charge the slaves.
Magic sees another Irresistible force, this time caster AoE toothcracker and getting a dimensional cascade (thankfully the SM avoid instant death).
No shooting.
The mass combat seem the bell unit decimated, leaving only the bell.  A this point the game is over, with only bits of units left on the Skaven side.

The game goes on for 2 more turns, ending in the rats wiped out.

Lessons leaned:
Really unimpressed by Gut Magic.  Might have just been the spells I got (3,4,5,and 6 swapped for signature), but I'm sorely tempted to get a butcher so I can switch the Slaughter Master to another law.

Leadies did ok, their shooting wan't ever going to be great against rats but they did good in combat.

Despite blowing it's cannon off turn 2, the Iron-blaster was great.  It stopped the threat of the wheel and made a difference in the bit combat near the end (Killed nearly 2 ranks of rats on its own).

The Mourn-fang were great once they got there, it's just a shame I lost a turn avoiding the wheel (which was killed before it was even a threat).
Awesome report. Good job on the victory. Quick question though. I thought only a bruiser can be the BSB?
Congrats on the victory and thanks for sharing :)

Made me laugh with a litte toing error thoug, when the laadies reformed. Instnatly thought of this
ob=av2e.  All too fitting :P

I thought only a bruiser can be the BSB?

Guessing it's just a typo, since the butcher can't have HA and shouldn't be given the sword of strife either :)
Ups, bit of a typo.  The BSB is a Bruiser not a butcher, will correct in first post.
Nice report and gratz on the win!
