Ogre Reproduction

Yes you did read the title right! My real question is where do little orges come from?  I'm aware of the existence of female ogre models for example the maneater and of course the bloodbowl cheerleaders (unless of course they are ogres in drag, a scary thought) , so here is a list of all my weird and squicky questions;

1) Is there a differentiation between the sexes analogous to humans or do ogres breed in some other fashion? 

2) Do ogres actually care about sexes, I mean will they only allow males to fight, or does it not matter to them?

3) Do female orges look exactly like male ones?

4) Are ogres actually that interested in breeding or do they only rut once a season?

5) Are there bonding ceremonies like what humans have or are females passed around and do the males care?

6) Is it normal for a tyrant to have a harem or does the ogre culture embrace serial monogamy?

7) Are newborn/spawned ogres (or maybe even hatched!) able to walk and defend themselves to some degree, might makes right after all, or are they nurtured by other ogres, and if the second is it the females males or tribes responsibility?

I've probably forgotten have a dozen questions however what do you guys think? Do ogres just have breeders like the skaven or what? Is there any solid fluff out there?!

On a serious note, I think the females just keeps for themselves, and when they feel like breeding, they just knock some male unconscious and drag them in to some bush/hut/cave. I.e, the women re respected amongst ogres.

Thanks man, but you see thats the thing. I cant imagine an ogre caring for a kid, I mean one an ogre child would have to be scary, two what do you feed them, can they just eat meat from the moment of birth? Finally why wouldn't an ogre just down that kid?

Babies eat any meat from the moment they are born. If their bellies are too small, they get thrown in the gorger pits. Also, it's probably killing gnoblars at a very early age.

Well in the old fluff (not sure about the new) when an ogre whelp drew blood from his mother's tiet(? is this the right word?)  then it is marked by the maw to become a butcher.  So there is definitely breast feeding going on.

I think the women care for the children until they are a certain age or size and then it's solo mode from there.

You see on the fighting, that's pretty much exactly what I was thinking. I picture the ogres as kind of like wolves in the way they hunt and culture so it would make sense for males and females to take an equal part in war/hunting. But in terms of kids, I'm kind of disappointed. I had the mental image of an ogre squatting over and poop out an egg, and a little baby ogre hatching out before going off to strangle a chicken or gnoblar or something. I just cant imagine ogres doing childcare.

There really isn't anything official on what ogre family life is.

There definitly are males and females and from the fact that it is mentioned how that one tyrant choaked to death on his Great grandson's skull I would think they at least keep track of who's whelps are who's. Then we have Ghark Ironskin's story of how his father whacked him over the head for not eating messily enough and one of the nails got lodged into his brain, and resulted in his excentricities and focus on Iron.

My guess would be that Ogres would be a polygamist society. males would compete for breeding rights and would accumulate a haram. In practice, this would result in most Bulls only having 1 mate and those on the bottom of the pecking order would have no mates at all. the Bruisers and Tyrants would have large harams. Butchers and Slaughtermasters too I would imagine.

On the battlefield the females probably just rank up with the rest of the ogres. With the exception of those who are nursing/taking care of the whelps.


As for childcare, they would definitly have it, but it wouldn't resemble anything we would know. it would definitly be full of voilence and such.

The nursing, and elderly, females of the tribe would act as Nannies for the younger children in a sort of ogre school. They would teach them what being an ogre is all about, telling them the stories of the tribe, show them how to build their first club, the nuances of choosing gnoblars...

But I have to disagree on the butcher/slaughtermaster. Sure they rank high on ogre pecking order,
but I think they are too devoted and concentrated on worshiping the Maw. They wouldn't have time or they wouldn't care to breed.

Tyrants would choose the most appealing ogre lady for them and breed with them. Same way as humans do I suppose. If it's a boy he will become second in command as he grows older and stronger. And later take the position of the tyrant after beating his father.
If it's a girl... She will still become second in command? Or will she be like a main housewife who would look after other ogre females and the breeding of the lower classes, take care of organizing feasts and such...

I would imagine that the position of Tyrant would be traditionally male, but if a female was able to beat and eat the Tyrant I don't think anyone would cry foul.

Although females might hang back and deliberatly not go after the Tyrants position simply because its safer to be his mate and not the top dog. The Tyrant's mate probably ends up getting handed off to the next Tyrant if the new Tyrant wants her. Security is the name of the game here.

But heres a question for everyone do the females keep to themselves and have their own alpha females or in ogre culture are the two sexes treated equally, might makes right, and the pecking order involved everyones, with the tyrant on top, follow by his bruisers and the butches/SM, then his guts and everyone else?

Edit oh and another question do the males of the tribe actual protect the young or do they not care and merely acknowledge them as their offspring. For example ogres with the kin eater big name have slain their kin so obviously they track family ties as someone else said, but it obviously shows they have no compunction about killing and eating their own if necessary.

Good Lord Almighty! Never have mine eyes spied such horror as the wet-nurse.

I would imagine that offspring can be a source of pride, in a selfish kind of way.

"My Whelp ate your Whelp" kinda thing.

The story of  "When Bolgut Fell Ill" shows that ogre welps do enjoy stories and because the book says they love it because of its "fanciful" nature. This might show that they tell them stories because they care for them.

Speaking of which, someone needs to write out "When Bolgut fell Ill"

Questions that would be answered could include,

Childbirth and the raising of Ogre whelps.

Ogre Society as a whole, including their social order, customs, and traditions.

Notable Feastdays.

Writing a collection of Ogre fireside tales like "When Bolgut fell Ill"

A detailed description of ogre technology as it exists. Favored methods of creating clubs, armor, and other more mundane items such as rope, clothing, structures, and harnesses for mounts.


Once we have everything done it could be put together into a PDF document for everyone to enjoy.


I'll start a thread. look for it.

...which would then become an excellent reference work for the tribes here...

I would love to see this happen. Unfortunately I would not be too much of an use in this project.
Except maybe some drawing which I am not too good at either...

this could be a prime conversion opportunity for someone to make an entire female ogre army with a female tyrant ect and would have some great fluff to it aswell !
