3 games, 2500 pts tournament. a new one

original thread ↗

So i played today another 3 games tournament, where we were 12 to play.

I decided to give wildcard list a go and went with this  ;

Slaughtermaster lvl4 of maw
Fencers Blade, Crown of Command, DispelScroll, Dragonbane Gem

BSB
4+ Wardsave, Ironcurse Icon

Butcher
lvl2 of Beast, Hell heart.

10 Ironguts
Full Command, Standard of Discipline

3x10 Gnoblar Trapper

2x3 Mournfang Cavalry
Musician, Banner, HA+Ironfist

3x1 Sabertusk

1 Thundertusk

2x Ironblaster.

First game was against empire. Death and Glory scenario.
His list was roughly this ;
a lvl4 of fire in a unit of 40 or so guys... hand weapon and shield units.
1 popemobile.
1 guy on some sort of pegasus that can steal spell on 4+ or something like that
a unit of 10 cavalry
a unit of 30 or 40 flagellant.
a unit of 30 great sword, with BSB in them.
1 rocket
1 Mortar
1 Cannon

I realized the strenght of gnoblar + Sabertusk when he was up to deploy his character before i was even done with my trash. This allowed me to place my Ironguts far away from his Great Sword, and really dictate who would fight where.

First turn was pretty uneventful. He did 3 wounds on my Thundertusk, and some other wounds here and there.

My turn first turn, i placed every trash i had in front of his unit, forcing him to either go around my sabertusk/Gnoblar, or charge and end up in a bad position. Magic didnt do much, but my cannon managed to kill the flying guy that can steal spells.. Before he even manage to do anything.

His turn second turn, he moved his stuff around, playing a bit like a dwarf (by that, i mean not moving at all, or moving back). In magic phase, he did that 36" S4 hit on everyone on his path on my Ironguts deathstar, doing one wound (i saved 2 out of 3 on 6+), and.... failed my LD test and ..... failed my reroll.... so my lvl4, my lvl2, and my BSB were fleeing from a crappy spell on turn 2... ouch. His shooting phase he finish my thundertusk, and both my 2nd unit of mournfang and my Gnoblar flee...

My turn second turn, i rally (thank god), and start moving my stuff around, blocking him even more. In the magic phase, i didnt do anything worthwhile. One cannon misfire, and blow itself. Mournfang #2 rally.

His third turn, his Flagellant charge one of my Sabertusk, and overrun just in front of my Mourfang, giving me a nice flank. In his magic phase, he cast something (not sure what, wasnt really game breaker), miscast, and kill enough for a Ld test... and fails it, inches away from his BSB. His lvl4 flee off the table.  :o

My third turn, i charge his flagellant. You'll notice at this point i didnt talk much about his greatsword, as they did absolutely nothing the whole game... he was so affraid to send them against my ironguts, that he just stayed back, hoping to counter charge some day... Magic phase didnt do much (again, i think i rolled 4-6 all game), and another cannon blew itself up. I kill about 20 flagellant, but they stay, thanks to unbreakable.

His fourth turn, his pope-mobile charge in. I still win combat, thanks to killing all the flagellant. At this point, the unengaged unit of mournfang and his unit of cavalry are each staying out of view from one another, keeping both his cavalry and his greatsword in check.

My fourth turn, my Ironguts deathstar charge in his popemobile (notice that i spent 2 turn recovering from that damn failed ld9 test). With a good hit allocation, i manage to kill his chariot, and overrun the guys.

At that point, it was a clear victory for me, as i lost only my trash, 2 cannon, and the gnoblar, while he lost everything but his greatsword + cavalry. Then we noticed he was below break point.

Massacre for the Ogres.

Game #2, against Breton coming up in about an hour.
My Blog
Games #2 vs Breton.
His army ;
Damzel in a unit of 9. with light
General (with HKB) in a unit of 9-10
BSB in another unit.
1 unit of something like 8 knigth, with a banner -2 Ld +1 S.
2 Trebuchet.
2 unit of 10 Archer.
1 unit of 6 Light Cavalry with bow.
1 tarpit of peasan, maybe 60? with lvl1 of beast.
1 unit of 3 Pegasus Knight

Deployment played a big role, as i had the chance to set myself really well with terrain, blocking his 3 cavalry for easily 3 turn, thanks to a marshland on one side. He give me first turn, obviously.

My First turn. I move gnoblar and Sabertusk ahead. Everything was placed so if he charge me, he's forced once again to be off position. And it really, REALLY worked well against him, since his cavalry were all packed together. 2 of my dog were also within range of a charge on his trebuchet next turn if he did nothing, which forced him to take care of them, otherwise he'd lose them quite early. In shooting phase, i dropped 3 of his knight from his general unit.

His first turn. He move forward, wondering how he'll deal with all my roadblock. His light cavalry charge my sabertusk flank, but do not overrun, placing himself right in front of my Mournfang. I was nice and explained him it was a mistake, as overrunning them would have placed them off charge. His cavalry with -2 Ld was frenzy, or something similar, and had to test to avoid charging my gnoblar.... 19 inches away. He fails, and move 2-3 inches ahead. His shooting phase was pretty meh, casting throne of vine and nothing else.

My second turn. I move closer with my deathstar, making sure my gnoblar and sabertusk are blocking him from charging or overrruning into my unit. Mournfang charge his unit of peasant, who went strangely way ahead of the rest (probably because they were the only one not blocked by something. I killed a fair number of them (something close to 15-20 again), but he was stubborn, and at that speed, he'd be for another 3 round. In my shooting phase, i realized his general didnt have any look out sir anymore, so i tried shooting him, misfiring (rolling 2), and wounding with the 2nd, but he made his 5+ wardsave.

His second, he decide to charge my Mournfang with his General, and move his pegasus in front of my deathstar (not exactly in front, as he didnt have enough movement, but close enough so i'm forced to charge him if i wanna move.) In his magic phase, he cast again throne of vine (i dispelled it with 2 dice, before he recast it with 3, with irresistible force) and +4 endurance on his Pegasus knight... 7 endurance, no fun.

My third turn, i charge my sabertusk on his trebuchet, and my ironguts on his Pegasus. In the peasant combat, i managed to win, once again, but failed to break them. vs the trebuchet, i managed to kill 1 crew, enough for a failed ld test. IG vs Pegasus, i won by Static CR only, as i didnt manage to do a single wound, despite 3 IG hitting, my SM and my BSB. They broke, i ran after them but was blocked by the gnoblar, giving him an easy charge next turn.

His third turn, he charge me with his General in my mournfang and his Damzel in my IG. In the close combat vs his General + Peasant, i managed to kill quite a few (thanks to ASL aura from thundertusk), before his General came and HKB 2 of my mournfang, removing himself from combat. Still won combat by 2. but both held. In the Damzel combat, i lost by 2, failing to breach his armor, but stay, thanks to steadfast.

My fourth turn, one ironblaster (the one who can't shoot) charge on the side of his peasant. The damzel combat is hardly fought, but nothing happens worth noticing (i kill maybe 2, win combat, but he held).

His fourth turn, he charge my gnoblar with his depleted cavalry of 5. I kill 1 with S&S, and 2 with Difficult terrain . He still win, overrun me, and end up straight in front of my Ironblaster. His General charge my Thundertusk, but fail to do a HKB, tieing combat.

We played an extra turn, which saw his damzel flee, my unit of mournfant die, and my Ironblaster finish his unit of cavalry, in the end i lost ; 1 unit of mournfang + 1 unit of gnoblar + 3 sabertusk. He lost close to 1000 pts.

Massacre for the Ogres again.

Third game vs Dark Elf.
My Blog
Game #3 vs Dark Elf.
his army ;
30 Witch Elves
20 Black Guard
1 Cauldron BSB
1 lvl4 dweller below. in a small spear bunker, about 25.
1 lvl2 Dark Magic in a corsair bunker, about 30.
6 Cold One.
1 unit of 30 Corsairs
1 Hydra.
2x5 Harpies

My 1st turn, i shoot both cannon at his Cauldron. First one failed to wound (thanks to T10), second one wound,he fail his 4+ Wardsave, and i deal 4 wounds, killing it instantly.

His first turn, his Cold One are stupid, and he fails to roll a 6 on his Harpy (to let another unit behind him charge my bunker), and fails to roll 4 to charge his Hydra on my Sabertusk. When he tries to cast Dweller below (with 5 dice), he rolls 4, 1, 1, 1, and ..... 1. So a 10 PD vs 5 DD ends up lowering my WS by 3, and that's all. His 2nd unit of Harpy charge my Gnoblar.... and draw combat!!

My second turn, i charge my mournfang on his unit of lvl2, obliterating them, and running them off. My other unit charge his Black Guard, and thanks to a good placement from my thundertusk, i manage to kill 8 before he gets to strike, winning combat easily by taking only 2 wounds. I also tried to charge his lvl4 bunker, which fled from my deathstar, i redirected on his harpies who failed to charge, and they flee too, leaving me in the open....

His second turn, he fail to raly his mage lvl4, and he runs off the board. His Cold One are once again stupid, and he calls it, with no way to win the game anymore.

So 3 massacre, and i won the overall.

Awesome wins, congratulations!

Can you post on what you like/dislike about the list you were using?  Would you make any tweaks to it?

can't really say right now, was my first 3 games with that exact list.

I had the chance to test it in its worst environment tho ; the random deployment scenario, and even there, it did very well.

One thing i didnt like is that i couldnt get Rock eye in my list, and i think its a must when you count on 2 2+ armor unit, and a deathstar.

Thanks for the reports, and congrats on your victories :)

Might I ask how you feel about the Thundertusk?
I've already bought one, but struggle to justify it's use, due to it's high pooints cost  :(

i really, really like him. hE's basically the only anti-infantry shooting i got, so i use him to pick on small units. vs bretonnian, for example, i did a direct hit on 10 paesant in front of a trebuchet. I killed 6, they failed their LD, and fled, which caused another ld test on trebuchet that he failed, saving me front one round of shooting from it. And since he can never misfire, i'm not scared to shoot at something i wouldnt risk otherwise.

And its aura is always nice. Near my mournfang, it always guaranteed i'll get my maximum attacks in before one dies (lets face it, a unit of 3 is bound to fail an armor save once in awhile).

Just like music to my ears, cheers  :)
