More Ogre Big Names!

original thread ↗

Here are some unoffical Big Names me and my friends run, with a change to the overal Big Name allowance. So what does everyone think?

OGRE BIG NAMES
Ogre characters are able to spend points on big names, as detailed in the army list. The points spent on big names add to the cost of magic items chosen for the Ogre and are limited by the maximum amount of points the character can spend on magic items. No big name may be taken more than once in the same army.

Warmonger                                                       15 points
Only the most war hardened and ferocious Ogres gain the title of Warmonger. Excelling at both combat and barbarity these Ogres cleave flesh from bone with uncanny savagery and speed.

Ogres with the Warmonger name gain +1 Weapon Skill and +1 Initiative.

Mangler                                                             25 points
Insatiable bloodlust and animosity typify these ornery brutes that would soon rather devour their own kin then let an enemy escape their insatiable maw.

Manglers are subject to the rules of Hatred.

Gnobler                                                               5 points
Some Ogres take kindly to the likes of Gnoblar hordes that scavenge the remains left behind across the barren Mountains of Mourn. Further yet some Ogres go so far as to carry many a pet Gnoblar into battle with them for luck or to assist in combat. As these weak and incommodious creatures cling to the shoulders and backs of their Ogre masters, pet Gnoblars will wait hoping for the perfect moment to strike out and reap the spoils of war.

Ogres with the Gnobler name may take up to five pet Gnoblars (i.e. Sword, Luck and Tooth) into battle at +5 points per Gnoblar. Sword Gnoblars confer an additional strength 2 attack per Gnaoblar at the attacking Ogres Weapon Skill and Initiative each round of combat. Luck Gnoblars allow one failed save to be re-rolled once per turn then are of no use. Tooth Gnoblars add +1 to a single casting attempt per Gnoblar used then are of no further use.

Fire Breather                                                    20 points
Not all Ogres worship the Great Maw, some pay favor to the mighty Fire Mouth. Consuming molten rock and other fiery concoctions these Ogres grow to sweat searing hot liquids and even the hint of their breath flickers immense heat and flame.

Fire Breathers once per battle can make one strength 4 flaming breath weapon attack. Furthermore these Ogres have the Blessing of the Volcano God.

Devourer                                                           30 points
With enormous and unyielding maws lined with razor sharp teeth and other knifelike objects, Devourers can bite through limbs and armor alike, slaying both man and beast in a single crushing chop.

Ogres with the Devourer name gain +1 Attack subject to the rules Heroic Killing Blow.

Stalker                                                               20 points
These Ogres are extremely stealthy and can move in close to prey undetected, stalking their targets until the time to kill.

Stalkers can choose to follow the rules of deployment as with Scouts.

Maneater                                                           35 points
Fearless and without regard these Ogres fight on in battle despite any and all odds, fearing nothing other than the all consuming power of the Great Maw itself.

Ogres with the Maneater name gain Stubborn and are Immune to Psychology.

Seer (Slaughtermasters and Butchers only)  30 points

Over countless rituals and shamanistic rites Slaughtermasters and Butchers can sometimes gain vision and clairvoyance regarding the raw energies of the Great Maw and can even harness the very flow of magic that surrounds them.

Seers can select their Gut Magic Spells before battle.

Foe Grinder                                                      25 points
Often heavily outnumbered in combat Ogres who can turn their enemy’s strength in numbers against them in battle are titled Foe Grinders. Such Ogres are capable of smashing countless foes with just a single well placed blow, using the masses of their enemies as a means to greater carnage and slaughter.

Ogres with the Foe Ginder name gain +1 attack whilst attacking an out ranking enemy in combat and +2 attacks when attacking a horde or swarm.

Bullgorger                                                         20 points
Gut Magic is more the practice of ghastly deeds and corpulent acts in appeasement of the Great Maw then it is a learned arcane trade or craft. Some Ogres have discovered that whilst consuming flesh and blood in battle and gorging on the raw sinews of the dead they too can harness the power of the Great Maw.

Once per battle an Ogre with the Bullgorger name can attempt to cast the Gut Magic Spell Bullgorger rolling a single D6 and adding both their current number of wounds and the total number of unsaved wounds they’ve inflicted in combat during battle to the casting roll.
Mash der skullz n bleed em out dry boyz... Leev nothin but bonz! (Ogre Tyrant Grux Maw of the Mangle Tusk Tribe)
I almost would have liked to have seen no magic items at all in the OK book and had just tons of big names and unit abilities that the ogres could have picked from.

I think that would have been cool and maybe even more fitting.

I like it! If you wanted some more ideas, I started a similar thread of this at this link, just in case you wanted to add some more variety to your stuff! http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=21040.0

I like some of them, and will probably try to borrow them in future house games. However, with the Gnobler big name, do they get to have up to five of each type of gnoblar, or is it up to five of any mix of the gnoblars? Also at 5 points for something that gives you (in the old rules) up to 25 points, I don't know if that's well balanced. I'd probably run it at 25 and basically use it as a way of taking some of the old rules into the new book. I miss the pet gnoblar theme (along with the slavegiant one, but oh well :P ).

And Foe Grinder? sounds like good fun :) mwahaha. Do you get +3 attacks against an outranking horde/swarm?

If you have more of these Big Names, keep 'em coming! I'd love to get a huge compilation sometime!
24 Gnobs! Wow, 2 sets, crazy!
Toothy, Workie, Sir Reginald, and Busty (for the bus explanation)!

43/101 Achievements earned! Woo! Got some of the tricky ones!

New book WLD: 17/8/2 ... A good quick game to get me re-invigorated, glad it was a win either way lol

Sazel,

5 Gnoblars total... Mix and match them as you'd like at +5pts per Gnoblar (Max pts +30 5 for the name and 25 in Gnoblars) and +2 attacks for Foe Grinder. +1 against out ranking enemies and then  +2 against a horde/swarm, not cummulative, so no +3.

Thanks and I'm glad you like them, and feel free to try them out. I really like them and my gaming group thinks they're not too over the top.

Seer devourer and firebreather are all way underpriced.  But other than that looks good
Maneater should be changed to match the special rules of a Maneater Unit they are deployed with.

There should also be a something for a Hunter-Turned-Tyrant like 'Beastmaster (Sabertusks can use your Ld if you are general, can buy harpoon launcher/vulture, can ride a Mournfang or Stonehorn)
Gnoblar should be rename "Hoarder" since he's hoarding them all for himself.

Johnny-Crass,

Devourer...35pts?
Seer... 50pts?
Firebreather... 30pts?

It is only (1) breath weapon attack for the entire battle, so I think 20pts is fair given other magic items and such that offer repeated use with other such rules.

Mash der skullz n bleed em out dry boyz... Leev nothin but bonz! (Ogre Tyrant Grux Maw of the Mangle Tusk Tribe)
Naanomi,

I agree the Maneater name could match the unit rule, but I just felt like it would be a 2 for 1 with some pretty nasty combos if you were to be giving your characters Maneater buffs. So I just wanted to keep it simple and free of the outliers of wicked combinations and magic items and such.

I do like the Beastmaster idea a lot!

How about can be mounted on a Stonehorn (maybe even Thundertusk) replacing crew and beastial units and scolls of binding monsters can use Beastmasters LD value.

Beastmaster... 20pts?

What do you think?

the only one i don't think should be there is Seer being able to pick your spells before battle can rig it mainly if you have multiple butchers/slaughter master cos then only one has to use gut magic  :D
How about this?

Gloryseeker 30pts

An ogre with this name cannot refuse challenges and must always issue a challenge when able. However they may re roll all failed to hit rolls when fighting in a challenge.

Broken. But would be soooooo cool.
Gargantuan-30 pts (Tyrants only)
Gargantuans have 1 more wound then usual and cause d6 stomps instead of one.
Iron-hard-20 pts
The ogre is immune to Heroic Killing Blow.
Broadgut-25pts
the ogre halves d3 and d6 wounds (round up)
Pulveriser- 30 pts
the Ogre has +1 Strenght and Toughness but can never refuse challenges
Entertainer-25pts
The ogre gets a re-roll for anything in a challenge for every 2 models watching.
Irontooth - 25pts

An Irontooth is an Ogre who has broken his teeth with rocks, and replaced them with sharp shards of iron.
An Irontooth gets +2 Attacks in a Fight, at his regular Initiative and Strength, as he bites at the enemy. Note that no weapons or magic items will affect the strength or initiative or amount of these attacks.
I miss the Tenderiser...

I like the pulveriser big name.

What do you think needs to be done to gloryseeker to make it fair?

How about a points hike or maybe not alliw the gloryseeker any initiative bonuses from magic items as they are so confident of their own prowess?

Make it re-roll failed rolls to hit in the first round of the challenge. Then it would be fair because otherwise I am re-rolling hits and most likely wounding on 2's.
Ok that sounds fair. Re-roll hits in the first round of a challenge for +30 pts but must always issue a challenge and cannot refuse enemy challenges.
Thats soooo bad I can't even fully say how bad it is. 30 pts for a conditional reroll of hits only while having a massive downside. Thats worth only 10 pts if that.

Make it reroll Hits, Wounds, and Saves in a Challange with no refusing and it is worth 30 pts.

Except Bretonnia has that for 25 without the rerolling saves one.  So stop your whinging ogre boy
I'm sure its still overcosted. :P

Then make it: 30pts and re-roll all failed rolls to hit and wound for the first round in combat.
Getting closer. Does it still have the must challange and cannot refuse bit?

Re rolls to hit and to wound for one round sounds good. I am reluctant to lose the bit about no refusing challenges but perhaps make it apply only to enemy lords or heroes so he doesn't get stuck with enemy unit champions?
Maybe: Re-roll failed hits and wounds against independant characters in the first round of a challange with them. However, due to his glory-lust he can never refuse a challenge from an independant character and must always issue a challenge himself if there are any enemy independant characters.
Sounds fair because you won't really go for over-kill on champions and IC's are what a tyrant is made for clubbin'
