Small tourney 2nd battle against dwarves 2.5K

original thread ↗

Played in a small tourney over the weekend, just 2 games and winner was best points with bonus/scenario points. Played a dwarf army and a NG army led by Grom.

Dwarf battle:
The terrain as you can see was spread out. 2 hills in corners opposite each other, couple forest which were mysterious and a couple houses on one end. He got to pick sides and chose the side with the houses so and he started setting up first. Deployment was going to be easy and I had way more regular deployments and he had 1 scouting unit to set up at the end.
He turtled  up on the hill with 2 cannons and a grudge thrower, 1 horde unit of regular infantry (GW and hvy armor) in front of the hill, organ gun and his elite horde infantry unit (GW and heavy armor) with Lord and BsB next to it. And one lone slayer for giggles. He set up his unit of rangers in the forest on his right flank. Forest turned out to be regular forest.

My set up from right to left was both IB’s on the hill, gutstar, larger gnobler unit, LB’s with small gnob unit in front of them, mourncav nest to them and all 3 cat units on the left flank.
I won’t touch on magic as I don’t think I got anything of consequence off and we both were looking to see who would go first and start the artillery duel. I got the role and the shooting began.

Turn 1 Ogres: I didn’t feel the need to get into range of his organ gun so my Gstar and large gnob stayed place. Moved up the small trapper unit in front of the LB’s who moved in behind them. Fangs moved into just outside short range of the rangers crossbows. Cats went racing around the flank trying to get around the rangers.

Shooting saw 1 shot go thru both his cannon and grudge thrower. Just nick a wound of the cannon and destroy the grudge thrower. Second IB puts 2 wounds on his other cannon. Not bad for a first turn. Now to get ready for the return fire.  LB’s shoot at his Generals unit nixing 5 out of them.

Turn 1 Dwarves:  He moves his oragen gun and 2 infantry blocks up some. Funny..making dwarves come to you….lol. His slayer heads to the biggest unit of ogres he can see. And that’s it. Shooting time

The dwarven rangers open up at the big gribblies sitting and snorting across from them and unload on ‘em. Doing….nothing. They look at each other and think “this ain’t gonna be good”. His cannons fire back, also does nothing. Oh the fickle winds of gunpowder.

Turn 2 Ogres: The slaughtermistress still having no urge to close yet back up a smidge to stay out of organ gun range. Gnobs follow. LB’s and their gnob unit move up to the edge of the forest looking at his Generals unit. NOW! Mourn cav kick em in the sides and go surging towards the rangers. They do their S&S and I make the charge with them. They only take a wound from the crossbows and make their dangerous terrain test for hitting the m in the forest. Also charge 1 kitty in. the other cats go to the flank to get around the forest and buildings.

Shooting saw my take out his wounded cannon and I miss his other cannon. LB's take some more out of his generals unit.

Combat: Well to put it nicely the brutes go thru the rangers like a gnobler thru a garbage pile. At the end of the carnage, 20 dead dwarves and 6 live ones where left. My cat was taken out of the combat thru casualties so couldn’t pursue. And to make matters worse when I fired of the banner I was able to nix the last one in range of his BsB. And he failed his panic test and turned and run. Now as I was looking at it I could follow thru the forest taking more DT test or hold. But his Generals unit was sitting in nice range for a flank charge so I figured if I rolled good enough I could get out of their arc. So I followed. Well, only rolled a 4 so not only didn’t I catch the rangers but I was still in sight of his generals unit. And took a wound for DT test and lost one fang. Still not a bad day.

Turn 2 Dwarves:  Well, after seeing the destruction of his ranger unit the General was looking for some pay back. He charges the cav in the flank and they exit stage left. Unfortunately with everything in the way the end up near the far edge of the board with multiple DT test. Also panics my pack of cats who follow in the hoove? Prints???  So they end up with a failed charge. His slayer heads for the gnob unit in front  of the LB’s. His other infantry unit heads towards my Gstar.

Shooting saw a misfire but dwarven engineers fix it and he is able to take out one of my IB’s. Now with my LB’s moving up I see they are just in range of his oragn gun and he sees it too. So he opens up on them. Rolls 2 hits and then some engineer thing again for a re-roll…and rolls another 2. So 2 S5 hits later, nothing.

Turn 3 Ogres: Well figure time to get the ball rolling so my general starts heading towards the horde of stunies in front of her. The gnob follow on her left flank. My little gnob unit moves to interpose them selves in front of the slayer and the generals unit. I think I lose a cat in here somewhere, not sure where??? But I have one cat still trying to get around the back edge but in now near the rangers. I fail to rally both the MF’s and pack and they head close to the far table edge.

Shooting I hit his organ gun but roll a 1 to wound. My LB’s are in short range now on his generals unit and open up on him, downing another 6-8  dwarves.

Turn 3 Dwarves: He tries to charge his regular infantry unit into my Gstar but fails the charge. He also charges his slayer into my gnob trapper unit and his generals unit into my LB’s. His slayer makes it taking a wound to S&S and I flee with my LB’s. They didn’t want anything to d owith that horde of ticked off stunties! And he rallies his rangers behind the forest.

His shooting is rather lack luster. His one cannon misfires and can’t shoot this turn or next. And his organ gun shoots at my Gstar and ends up blowing itself up.
So combat saw his slayer kill a couple gnobs and breaks  and runs them down.

Turn 4 Ogres: Here is where I make a mistake that cost me the game and the tourney. I charge my Gstar and gnobs into the unit of dwarves in front of them. Now I was thinking when I charged the gnobs in there I could have more ranks and break his steadfast. Completely forgot about how much CR I was gonna give up with them. Rally my LB’s and my MF’s thankfully. Cats head of the boad. And charge my lone cat into his unit of 6 rangers.

Only shooting I had was my IB and he blew up his cannon on a misfire. So just a chariot now.

Well..yeah…combat. Slaughtermistress makes way and my BsB and butcher hang in the 2nd rank. Now they kill around 10 or so dwarves and I only think I lose 1 ogre and some wounds back. My gnobs on the other hand just got smeared. I think I lost around 12-15. So I lose the round my gnobs stay cause of steadfast and general LD but her unit has to roll snake eyes. Well they break..Damm!! My cat kills 1 ranger and takes a wound back. He makes his break test.

Turn 4 Dwarves: He moves his generals unit up some but just kinda staying in the middle of the board. His slayer charges my unit of LB’s….yeah…gutsy little fellow. My opponent said in wasn’t the smartest thing to do but if was fully in character, which was true.

No shooting so straight to combat. His dwarves finish the gnobs and break them and run them down in the process catch my Gstar and they disappear too. There’s the game. Bonuses were killing the enemy general and BsB and getting banners. His slayer puts up a good fight but ends up smeared on the end of a cannon barrel. Another note in the book of grudges.  My cat kills another ranger and they finish him off.

Well this was pretty much the end of the game. Although we did see what would have happened with the only 2 unit that could have done something. He would shoot his cannon on T6 at my IB but did nothing. And I would have shot my LB’s at his rangers behind the trees. I killed 3 and his lone ranger headed of the board in panic.

In summery I think I had him till I made that blunder. My Gstar  would have won the combat and I think  I could have ground the combat out. I should have used my gnob unit to tie his generals unit up and make him take a DT test on his nice horde of elites. And to bad my cav had to hop all the way to the other side of the battle pretty much took them out of the battle for the rest of the game. All in all though a great game and he was a nice guy to play against.  This was his first game against the new Ogres and he did come away with some new impressions. We can go toe to toe with a dwarf gunline. First turn can be critical. And our cav are just nasty with the DHB and hit like a ton of stone!

Thats just funny...

After playing a flawless tactical game you charge your gnoblars in against a horde of dwarves who have hatred against them and wound them on 2s? Are you completely insane??

I would have liked to see your opponents face when you charged in those ironguts. He must have thought: "Thats it - game over!" And then you charged in the gnoblars aswell, and his expression went from disbelief to a grin. ;)

Anyway - very nice battle report in a pleasant format with good pictures. Good work!

Better luck next time - leave those gnoblars home!

Yeah..it was one of those  "Doh! Can't believe I just did that!!..... :o

I plan to next time. Gonna change up my list going magic light with just 2 L2's and gonna go with a Tyrant leading a horde of ogres. Rest of list pretty much the same except I dropped the large gnob unit and replaced it with a 11 trapper unit and had to drop 3 LB's. I did like the option of taking my time and softening up the opposition with shooting and setting up my redirects and letting the enemy come to me. Having the multiple drops and being able to to pick my match ups was really nice.

If you never take gnoblars, you never have to worry about doing something like this.   :)
