Best gear for a Hunter on Stonehorn?

original thread ↗

The headline says it all - assuming the rule of cool has convinced you to field a savage, rock-eating monster riding another savage, rock-eating monster, what is the best way to equip him? Do you give him an ironfist, a great weapon or a crossbow (only one can be chosen)? And what about magic gear? Do you consider any particular support units mandatory? Discuss!
I would go for Armour of Destiny and a great weapon. Really hard to kill with 4+ as and 4+ ward and hits a ton of bricks in CC with 4 s7 attacks.

It is a good deal, since he cant wear heavy armour exept magical.

Charmed Shield could be good to protect him from Cannonballs. Stubborn is obviously also a good thing to have on him.

been discussed a few times:

In my mind you want to send a model like that after what it is best against, gear up your hunter to hit as hard as the stonehorn (multiple ways to do this) and then give him a bit of protection (also multiple ways to do this)

As long as they punch equally hard you will do well against the intended targets of this model, when you start trying to make the hunter hit more often but not as hard etc or do other crazy things with him it detracts from the effectiveness of the model as a whole.

Charmed Shield + Talisman of Preservation is definately a must imho. Stubborn not so much as the goal is to actually deal more dmg than your opponent (if you fail at this, either your dice failed you, or you choose poorly your opponent)

Beastkiller would be a good bigname.

I totally agree, that seems like the best way to go!

On another thread, Wifstrand and Morkash came up with a build that illustrates this perfectly :

"Giantbreaker big name, Gold sigil sword, Enchanted Shield and Ironcurse Icon."

Giantbreaker makes the hunter a harder hitter, Gold Sigil Sword makes sure he hits first in most cases, which complements nicely the impact hits of the Stonehorn, Enchanted shield makes him a little more solid and the icon, even though it's only 6+, can help save both Hunter and mount from a nasty cannonball... Charmed Shield could work as well, but I prefer enchanted just because the idea of a Hunter with a 3+ armor save makes me smile.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm currently modelling my Hunter on Stonehorn to carry exactly those...  :)

Oh, by the way, was wondering, if the Hunter has Giantbreaker, does the +1 S affect his spear? or would we use his basic strenght?

Greyback pelt, where have you gone?
I always go the great weapon on the stonehorn mounted hunter. This is so that if he gets challenged (after the stonehorn has charged in, doing it's impacts), then the GW attack is simultaneous with the thunderstomp, getting better overkill. And if he gets charged by cavalry, which you can't thunderstomp, the extra strength helps get through the armour.

For magic equipment, I've found the following to be great;
Charmed shield (obvious really, ignore that first cannon/stonethrower hit, and only 5pts so why not?)
Talisman of 5+ ward
The other tricksters shard - almost unfair against certain armies (wood elves, daemons), and it means the hunter with a GW is pretty good at taking out enemy characters in a ranked unit (4 attacks and S7, WS5 and them re-rolling ward saves).
After a few tries I would go with Enkiel's build and here is why: I've now run a Stonehorn 5 games, and only once did I actually lose combat and get run down. So stubborn, though helpful, is not a huge problem. Also the Hunter striking first does not seem a big advantage in comparison to lose the +2 S of the Great weapon. Also  my opponents usually were attacking my Hunter, so I found keeping him alive the first priority.

depends on his role... but i see him as an excellent T4 creature killer... WoC... tomb guard... grave guard... other... guard :)

For this reason i would take giant breaker and sword of striking... hit on 2s. and wound on 2s... combined with his charge should really put the hurt on and remove all but the best armour saves.

also think he would need a unit in support... so next to 3+ bulls...
You will see then that your opponents will attack your Hunter. His T is worse than the Stonehorn's and the Stonehorn still has a 5+ save vs. S4 opponents. Losing the Hunter's ld9 and his 4 attacks are a big disadvantage. Even when I had a 5+ ward on my Hunter, My opponents (S4 or 5) were still attacking him first. That's why I think a 4+ save is really good on him.
