As my last topic about magic being worth it has turned into a big thread I thought this poll might cut to the chase and show people what we all think.
From now on I'll be going with 2 firebellys.

I chose SM and FB however the real answer to that question is, "What else is in my army?"

Agreed. If your strategy depended on having another lore than Maw on your Slaughtermaster, SM + Butcher would of course be a better way of doing it.

A SM and FB, the same as I have at 2000pts.
I don't suffer from mental instability. In fact, I enjoy it immensely.
Gutlord Inquisitor: FORUM FIGHT! Me, I'm betting on the stronghold. Sure, they're outnumbered with thick skulls, stubborn bull-headedness and an inflated sense of self-worth, but hey, they're Ogres.

Yup, wouldn't play without one!
I keep my setup relatively cheap though.
I like to try and break the mould

Thats too many carsters for my taste. Do you take the butcher so you can get a good lore?

Thats too many carsters for my taste. Do you take the butcher so you can get a good law?
I take the butcher partly so I can get a good range of spells from the Maw lore. Mainly it's because I like to have a unit or two operating away from the BSB and SM, they can do this great with Spinemarrow and the threat of other buffs without being in the 12" bubble that you have to be for most of the SM's buff spells.
4 wounds and T5 isn't a bad addition to a unit either.

I personally think 3 casters in a list - unless it's a huge list - is too many points invested in magic. Given you're limited to maximum 12 dice, typically 7 (with 50% chance of +1 from channelling from 3 casters), you are rarely going to have enough dice to have all three casting spells.
I get your point about 3 casters meaning you can spread your army out somewhat, however if it's just about getting stubborn then just make sure you take stubborn on your maneaters and the crown of command on a character with another unit.
Genestealer25 Oct 2011
SM and FB or SM and Butcher is my standard, but again it depends on the rest of the list. BSB is my third character in most builds. I also try to keep my lords and heroes on the cheap side.
Bitharne25 Oct 2011
SM + Butcher...I also take a Firebelly but then again I don't consider him a caster per se. He can cast spells, but that is not why I take him.
Edit - In fact...i've never cast a spell with him to date

Two FB all the way, one with the Hellheart, the other with the Stubborn Crown and Scepter of Stability. Both reside in the second rank of Irongut units. I have had good results with this setup, but I did like Heavens when I expirimented with it, it was just too many points sunk into magic. At games larger than 3k, the SM (Heavens, Sickle) and Butcher (Maw, Heart) come out instead. Its amazing how powerful a +6 to cast in heavens is.

Well - I gotta chime in with what I am afraid will cause a lot of fire (No pun intended... since I don't bring FB's).
1 level 4 slaughtermaster, 2 level 2 butchers
Usually its something like this:
1 Level 4 Slaughtermaster Lore of the Great Maw (Almost always)
AND
EITHER
2 Level 2 Butchers with Lore of Beasts (Not using RuneMaw Banner)
OR
2 Level 2 Butchers with Lore of Heavens (Using the RuneMaw Banner)
If i have the RuneMaw - I hex my opponet with signature Heavens spell
If I don't have the RuneMaw - I buff my unit with Beasts signature spell.
Occationally I'll get a tasty treat from one of the lores (Like The Curse of Anraheir from beasts or Comet of Cassadona from Heavens) and i'll use those too sometimes.
But for me, I bring 3 casters for 3 reasons
1) Items: Dispel scroll, Hellheart, and usually something to help cast/dispel (on my slaughter master... i love the +6 to dispel haha)
2) Reliability: I want to get those signature spells off. If I have two casters with the same spell, I am doubling my chances of getting one of them off.
3) Positioning: I want to be able to move wherever I need to and not be attached. With these kind of options, I have a lot of movement direction and options.
I find it (so far) to work pretty good. I do bring a BSB, i do not bring a Tyrant. Other than the items mentioned above, these casters are barebone and the BSB is also naked (usually - most of the time because I get a magic banner).

I'm running now for the 2nd time a Heavens Slaughtermaster & Maw Butcher (lvl2). I really like this combo. I also think a Maw Slaughtermaster & lvl 2 Firebelly is quite good.

My usual set up will be SM + Firebelly, as it is in my eyes the most polyvalent.
That said, it's not the always the best. Against Dwarves, I would prefer SM + Butcher to give the SM the lore of Heavens. Against Brets too, but I will take the lore of Beasts.

It's actually used quite a lot in French. From this we can deduce that Far2Casual can speak French.
