Magic defence?

original thread ↗

I have always taken the tried and true dispell scroll plus a hellheart. i am thinking of swapping the dscroll for either:

feedback scroll - to limit the number of dice used for a spell. if the threat is there, the oppo may only use 4 or less die and be easier to dispell. the threat would be more effective than the actual result.

Frog scroll - since i face alot of DE with the spell that gives them more casting dice, this would be a nasty trick. let them cast the spell for more dice and then hit them with the frog. any unused dice cause wounds if i remember correctly. this could be fatal. its a 1 in 3 chance of stopping a lvl4 from casting magic for that phase from the start of the magic. and if it goes off, leaves it open to be shredded by poison sniper mannies. plus its a 4+ to remain a frog. vs lvl2s, its even easier to go off on a 3+.

my plan would be: more than 15inches away frog scroll. then as i close, hell heart. it could be 2 phases whereby no casting is done or is extremely limited.

any thoughts on this?

Roc, your math is correct, but bereft of tactical considerations

Stick with the dispel scroll.

I tend to agree with this.

The Frog scroll, as far as I remember isn't great, doesn't the enemy have to roll under his magic LV to make sure he doesn't turn into a frog, plus you let the spell off?
A LV4 isn't going to be turned into a frog very often.

The best defence is a dispel scroll and a Lv4, that's all I run and it seems to do fine.
I don't even bother with the Hellheart myself as I don't like the extremes and unreliability of it.

You can't be old and wise, and have youthful memory... even if you are FF

Achievements 39/101

Latest: 9. Sigh! - lose more than 3 ogres to any one casting of a spell that involved you taking an initiative test as part of it's resolution

W/L/D : 9/10/2
I love the extremes and the unreliability of the hellheart though :). Makes for stories you remember.

Dispell scroll is my number one choice. For very few points, I like the Staff of Stability. I don't know how many times I've blown a dispel roll by one or two points, and that is exactly what this item is good for.

I agree about the Hell Heart. It can do wonders or fizzle.
38/101 ogre achievements

Vote for the best army list vs. the Dwarves.
