Magic Items Big Names

original thread ↗

Hi Ogres!
The Ogre Kingdoms are my first Fantasy Army and I have only played a few games so far.  I keep messing with the items to see what they do, I need to play more games!  So my question is what are the most common Magic Items used for just about any army and which ones are best used by Ogres specifically?  So far it seems that a good amount of anti spell like a dispel scroll and a hell heart are auto include.  But they are expensive and can take up a the allowance of the Butcher and half of the Slaughtermaster.  Does the choice depend on how the army is used?  I reckon being ogres anything to improve hits and causing wounds would be a must.
For our casters,

Channeling Staff is a good cheap item. 5+ channel is a good thing to have(especially if you are near some Arcane Ruins)

The Earthing Rod is good for a SM that plans on casting IF each turn. rerolling the Miscast table can be desirable in some situations, but its hardly a mandatory item.

Armor of Destiny+Ironfist on a SM gives you very good protection at a good cost. you basically pay 8 points over the 4+ ward item to get a 4+ armor in addition. 4+/4+ is really decent on a caster. and you still have 50 points to spend on magic items.

Hellheart+Dispel scroll are almost mandatory, at least the Scroll is anyway. yeah, they are fairly expensive, but at 2500+ it should be easy to get em both as you can easily run 3 casters if your General is a SM. I run a SM, Butcher, and a Firebelly in 2500+ and they have plenty of space for these 2 items(Scroll on Firebelly, Hellheart on Butcher)

Obviously, Talisman of preservation is a good, but expensive way of protecting your characters.

I would say the two items that should probably be in almost all your lists are :

1. A Dispell Scroll. Ogres are very susceptible to big nasty spells, especially in the two first turns. If your opponent use many dices for one spell and does not get his Irresistible Force, then you burn your scroll, save your Ogres AND almost shut down completely your opponent's magic phase for that turn (he lost a big part of his power dices, and you have all your dispell dices left). It's guaranteed and cheap, a must have imho.

2. The Crown of Command. Making the units with our characters stubborn is invaluable. It will save a LOT of points a LOT of times. I especially find that our BSB + Stubborn is amazing (Ld 8 rerollable no matter what), as this guy would automatically die if he breaks from combat.

Other than that, there are A LOT of useful magic items to be taken, here is a simple list with items we see a lot, there are others but they may be more situational :
Weapons : Fencer's Blades, Sword of Anti-Heroes, Sword of Striking
Armours : Armour of Destiny/Fortune, Dragonhelm, Enchanted Shield, Charmed Shield
Talismans : Talisman of Preservation/Endurance, Greedy Fist, Luckstone
Arcane items : Hellheart, Forbidden Rod, Earthing Rod
Enchanted Items : Ruby Ring of Ruin & Potion of Speed (Firebelly), The Other Trickster's Shard
Banners : Runemaw (BSB), Dragonhide banner, Banner of Swiftness, Standard of Discipline, Banner of Flame, Gleaming Pennant
I agree with Far2Casual's list, but also find the Powerstone and Staff of Stability to be really good arcane items for a low point cost. The problem is that I'm usually taking 2 casters and the Earthling Rod on the Slaughtermaster and Dispel scroll on my second caster tend to be my main choices. The Hellheart is also excellent, though very random in its effectiveness.

Also under Enchanted items: The Ironcurse Icon, and if you are not playing with open lists (i.e. not revealing your magic items in advance) then the Rock Eye.
