Right, time to resurrect this as I have some games to report!
The "yhetees as fast cav role" is one that I'm trying myself at the moment.
This struck a chord when I read it, and looking at the stats of a small unit of Yhettees I realised that they are the equal of (if not superior to) most other flanking fast cav style units in other armies. They are cheap (at 132 points), very quick and dish out a lot of damage over a small frontage. So this was my plan when I desinged my list. As I like a sense of symmetry to my deployment, I went with 2 units of 3 for two games, combining them with 2 Sabretusks and 2 units of 10 Trappers as my first 6 deployments.
Game 1Game size: 2400
Number of yhetees: 2 unit of 3, no Greyback
Opposing army: Beastmen
Was flammability an issue: No
Overall game effect: As flankers, they took a while to get into the game properly. He had 3 big Hordes of beastmen, 2 Gor and 1 Bestigor. I knew my army could deal with two of these at once, so a unit of Yhettees and a Sabretusk were tasked with distracting one unit of Gor. Unfortunately my Sabre was unable to March on turn 2, so the Yhettees went straight into the face of the Gor, angled so when he charged he would face away from the centre. In the first round of combat he was far enough away from his General and BSB that he failed his Fear check, so 12 automatic Str5 hits killed a fair few Gor! I won this round, rather unexpectedly, and only lost 2 wounds to supporting attacks. In the second round he passed his Fear, and despite going first and killing another handful of beasts, I lost 2 Yhettees and the remaining one fled on one wound. Unfortunately he passed his restrain check, but they bought me a turn against a vastly supirior foe.
On the other flank, they killed a Razorgor that was blocking my Mournfang and then supported said cav by charging another Gor block in the flank. This was great, as they suffered very few attacks back in return and again killed loads of them. They then ran down the Gor when they fled, but as the Mournfang also would have caught them this was nothing over the top.
Game 2Game size: 2400
Number of yhetees: 2 unit of 3, no Greyback
Opposing army: Warriors of Chaos
Was flammability an issue: Slightly
Overall game effect: Same set up as in Game 1, this time though the flanks were more dangerous. One unit took out some Warhounds, but couldn't overrun into the way of a double chariot charge that killed the Mournfang. They did however countercharge the chariots, and again they failed a Fear test meaning no attacks back and 9 Str 5 hits. They beat this chariot and ran it down, crashing into the other before doing the same thing! The Helcannon eventually Rampaged them off the board.
On the other flank they didn't last long. I wanted to use them to redirect his Frenzied Marauders, but his Wizard managed to zap them with a Flickering Fire of Tzeentch, killing 2 by doing 2 wounds. The survivor fled off the board. Whilst Flamability doubled the damage, even if they hadn't been Flammable the same thing would have happened, so it wasn't a big problem. I had to let the spell through, as he still had Gateway to cast that turn at my big unit of Ironguts.
Overall, I thnk they do rather well in this role. Their Str of 5 and their I of 4 are really big when fighting small units, and as always Swiftstride is a huge boost.
For my third game I will try a single bigger unit, just to get a different experience with them. I am not sure when this will be, but I will report back once I have done so!
The answer to everything is sabretusks. There is no problem that can't be solved at least in part with kitties.
