2999 pts - Challenge against Bretonnia

original thread ↗

Here's a list I plan to use in a Challenge against a Bretonnian player. The rules of the Challenge is that we'll play 6 games using the 6 scenarios of the BRB and see who'll win. In it's a draw 3-3, a 7th game will be played on a random scenario (but each player can discard one scenario of the list beforehand).

So here's the list :

2 Lords: 655 Pts.   21.8%
3 Heroes: 743 Pts.   24.7%
3 Core Units: 920 Pts.   30.6%
5 Elite Units: 679 Pts.   22.6%
0 Rare Unit

Tyrant, General, Ironfist, Giantbreaker, Sword of Striking, The ohter Trickster's Shard, Armour of Fortune - 305 Pts.
Slaughtermaster, lvl4, Talisman of Protection, Hellheart, Lore of The Great Maw - 350 Pts.

Firebelly, Scroll, Lore of Fire - 145 Pts.
Bruiser, Ironfist, HA, Crown of Command, Dragonhelm, BSB - 183 Pts.
Hunter, Stonehorn, Sword of Anti-Heroes, Charmed Shield - 415 Pts.

10 Ogres, Handweapon & Ironfist, Lookout Gnoblar, M, S, C - 355 Pts.
10 Ironguts, M, S, C, Lookout Gnoblar - 465 Pts.
20 Gnoblars, M, S, C, Gnoblar Trappers - 100 Pts.

4 Leadbelchers, M - 182 Pts.
1 Sabretusks - 21 Pts.
1 Sabretusks - 21 Pts.
6 Maneaters, HA, 3 x 2xHw, Scouts, Stubborn, M, S, C, Gleaming Pennant - 365 Pts.
1 Gorger - 90 Pts.

Total: 2997

I take a lot of point into heroes because against Bretonnia, I think I'll both their resistance and hitting power.

The Tyrant will open up (hopefully) their armours with 5 S6 attacks mostly hitting on 2's and forcing them to reroll their ward saves. With a 4+/5++, he should be resilient enough.
The SM will use the hellheart deep into the battles as my opponent as a tendancy to run his mages inside his units of knights, and miscasts will grant me free kills on many occasions. Almost all Gut Magic Spells are premium against Bretonnia, so I don't think I'll be using the boosted Trollguts that much.

Heroes, it's pretty standard but the Stonehorn. I will give him a try, as he seems to be pretty okay against this army specifically. S6 hits will hurt him, and they almost have at least one character in each unit, so my Hunter will also lay down at least 5A S6.

Base, I take my usual blocks but raise a bit the number of Ironguts I normally use (I usually go with 8+one character). I need those S6 attacks. Probably Tyrant + FB in Ironguts (hammer), BSB+SM in Ogres (anvil). The Gnoblars are there for the Watchtower and for Blood and Glory, and synergise well with Leadies.

Specials, some Leadies will give me some shooting, S4 piercing is the bane of Bretonnian knights. A good pack of Scouting and Stubborn Maneaters will have the role to force him to split his army to take care of them. The S5 attacks should hurt them. I'll use a Gorger to handle the probable Trebuchet or Mage Bunker, and otherwise S5, Killing Blow and Unbreakable should even give some nice support to Maneaters if necessary.

I purposedly don't take any Mournfang because I think my opponent will overreact to them while building his list. He's also very mobile which will give me a much harder time to get the necessary charge, and if he doesn't take infantry it will also decrease their potential.

Any thoughts ? The only think I fear to miss is an Ironblaster ...
Get rid of giant breaker on your tyrant! Are you mad sir!? Your going to get killed by heroic killing blow! Beware the virtue of heroism.

I think you should make a britonian list that you would take if fighting your ogres. That should help you figure out what your going up against and what tools you need to bring.
I've tried scouting maneaters against 3k of bretonnians and there was no room for a good deployment.  I ended up deploying them in my deployment zone to charge the vanguarding peg knights  (first game against brets in my channel) .  For 365 points I would sooner take a load of leadbelchers, ironguts or 2 ironblasters (to counterbattery the trebs, or pick off a heroic killing blow lord on peg).  Those are all pretty scary to brets.

I'm not sure if the 100pt gnoblar unit will be worth it just for watchtower.  You could replace it with 2 normal 10 gnob units and a sabretusk and still have 30pts leftover.  I don't think you need worry about blood and glory, as it will all boil down to your general's stubborn unit.

I'm interested to see how the stonehorn works out.  In theory it could soak up some treb fire and absorb a lance charge and str 6 hits are golden against brets.  Could be great.

What stonehorn? :? :>?
If it looks like food an' it smells like food an' it sounds like food an' it feels like... oh what the hell, I'll just eat it an' be done with it.

My armies are Tyranids and Ogres. Yes, I was slightly hungry when I discovered the hobby.

Hunter, Stonehorn, Sword of Anti-Heroes, Charmed Shield - 415 Pts.

That one I would say.  :P

I completely changed my list and I validated this one :

1 Lord: 375 Pts.   12.5%
3 Heroes: 624 Pts.   20.8%
4 Core Units: 915 Pts.   30.5%
4 Elite Units: 665 Pts.   22.1%
2 Rare Units: 420 Pts.   14.0%

Slaughtermaster, lvl4, Fencer's Blades, Talisman of Endurance, Scroll, Lore of the Beasts - 375 Pts.

Golgfag Maneater, General - 260 Pts.
Butcher, lvl2, Hellheart, Lore of The Great Maw - 185 Pts.
Bruiser, HA, Crown of Command, Luckstone, Enchanted Shield, BSB - 179 Pts.

10 Ogres, Handweapon & Ironfist, M, S, C - 350 Pts.
10 Ironguts, M, S, C, Lookout Gnoblar - 465 Pts.
10 Gnoblars, Gnoblar Trappers - 50 Pts.
10 Gnoblars, Gnoblar Trappers - 50 Pts.

6 Leadbelchers, M - 268 Pts.
5 Maneaters, HA, 5 x Ogre Pistol, Stubborn, Vanguard, M, S, C, Lookout Gnoblar, Std. of Discipline - 355 Pts.

1 Sabretusks - 21 Pts.

Ironblaster - 170 Pts.
Stonehorn, Harpoon Launcher - 250 Pts.

Total: 2999

So I changed my list quite a bit to remove some points from Heroes to be able to field a bit more shooting and an Ironblaster (I need it a lot I think). So the Stonehorn goes alone, the Tyrant becomes Golgfag in his Maneaters with Standard of Discipline. The Firebelly is less attractive than usual against Bretonnia, so instead I put a Slaughtermaster of Beast to use the Lance and the Curse of Anraheir that will pose much more trouble to him. The Butcher on the side will still carry the Hellheart.

The idea behind using Golgfag is to get a cheaper general that still hits like a Tyrant while still using an average of 70 points in magic items. So I can take a bit more risks with my Slaughtermaster as he isn't the General. I will use the Other Trickster's Shard all the time as making the Knights reroll their 5+ ward saves is invaluable. Combined with the many S5 attacks from the Maneaters, it should carve through Knights without any problem. Then as soon as I can, I buy him the Trickster's Helm to take a challenge against his Bret Lord that will have a much harder time to HKB him. The distribution of items I'll use on Golgfag are :

20 : OTS, Dragonbane Gem
30 : OTS, Opal Amulet
40 : OTS, Opal Amulet, Dragon Helm
50 : OTS, Armour of Fortune
60 : OTS, Gut Maw
70 : OTS, Trickster's Helm, Dragonbane Gem
80 : OTS, Trickster's Helm, Opal Amulet
90 : OTS, Trickster's Helm, Opal Amulet, Biting Blade
100 : OTS, Trickster's Helm, Opam Amulet, Sword of Might
110 : OTS, Trickster's Helm, Gnoblar Thiefstone
120 : OTS, Trickster's Helm, Gnoblar Thiefstone, Biting Blade

There you go :)
