Dipped Ogres

Hi everyone!

A few years ago I started painting an army of Ogres. Unfortunately I have done nothing with them since then. Now that the new army book is out, I thought it would be a good time to go back to them.

I wanted to make sure the models all had a consistant feel to them, so rather than look out the old models, I'm going to start again from scratch. I like individual looking models, so for me, Ogres are ideal as I can spend extra time on each one.

I love converting the models, not as keen on painting though. That's why I dip them.....

Here are some of my old Ogres. They're unlikely to be used in the new army, but I wanted to let you folks see how dipped Ogres can look. I'm not going to use the same bases, they take such a long time to make. I did try making a mould and casting them, but it was just too much mess and hassle. Now I sound lazy.

Anyway, here's a sample of the old models

So far I've got my first 5 bulls 90% done. The regiment will be armed with ironfists, but I don't rally like the look of the ones on the sprues, so I've made some shields for them.

As you can see I've also done a wee weapon swap on them.

Just some clean up to do. The old mould line I've missed, bases finished etc.

Looking nice, real smooth GS work and smooth plasticard weapons..very nicely done.

Looking good there-and the dipped figs look ace-love the yellow trousers and I'm not taking the mick either, they really do 'pop'!

I am thinking about dipping as well. Seem very time-efective.

if you want to get onto the tabletop with good looking models, then dip them.  It can make a novice look like they've been painting for years.  Just like the washes did a few years ago, only cheaper.  I have done over 150 gnoblars for my horde and would still be on the first 50 if I wanted that kind of detailing. 

I like it much.

Just out of interest, do you use the spray to remove the 'shine' dip is meant to produce?
I've been curious about trying it but with the anti shine stuff I was concerned it may work out pricey

Sorry for the lack of updates, I started a new job, so that is taking up most of my time, and my laptop died.

I've got a couple of (not great quality) pictures, mainly to show the bases I'm using. I'll get some paint on the models tomorrow, and see what I can do about getting some better pics.

I use the army painter anti shine varnish, it's no the cheapest stuff, but looks good.  The way I look at it is dipping saves me about half the time of painting.  If I can save (for example) 5 hours painting a regiment, I don't mind picking up an hours overtime at work, and using that money towards the materials.

Nice bases. Did you sculpt and cast them yourself? I don't recognize them.

I wish I had done them myself.  They are from a company called base-x of war, some of the best resin bases I've seen.

Hmm after I saw the tile bases I was going to recommend the Dungeon Slate from Back 2 Basix.
That dipped looks like it worked out ok. I would have thought Ogres to have to much surface area for a dip.

First half of my bulls regiment is finished. It'll end up being 11 models strong, but I've got 5 of them done now. The only thing I think i'll need to go back over is the standard. I didn't want it to look too clean, but I think I've gone too far the other way.

I've got 6 Iron guts done now, just waiting for the greenstuff to dry, so I'll make a start on them tomorrow.

I know the feeling about lack of time etc-Still no internet access as have moved house this week and having to try toget online to deal with stuff whilst it's 'quiet' at  work!:P

They really do look a treat Where did the axes come from if you don't mind me asking? Are they scratchbuilt or bought? They look spiffing

I made the axes out of plasticard, and then cast them in resin.  Originally I was going to have all of my ogres with two hand weapons, and the thought of making 20+ from plasticard wasn't one I relished...

Hey, I managed to get my test model done for my Ironguts.  I'm going for a more uniform look compared to the Bulls, painted red armour, and greyish trousers.
