the start of a little story...

original thread ↗

hey,

Well, it's actually the start of a very long story - if I get the time to write it! hope you enjoy this little bit, not really much content just setting up what's going to happen :)

Gabor Haas was a young man of twenty-two years, a historian’s apprentice living in the great city of Altdorf. He had grand dreams of becoming a famous adventure, travelling extensively in uncharted lands as his teacher had done. As he lay asleep on his bunk in his small quarters, he had no idea that on that very day would begin a most fantastic adventure, one for him to call his own.

A frenzied knocking came at his door, stunning him from sleep. Gabor sprang up, rubbing his eyes wearily. He went to the door, a heavy wooden (one) with iron locks. This room had once been a food cellar to his teacher. He pulled open the door and saw a small balding man, dressed as a servant.

‘Master Gabor, his Excellency Thomas Dampier requests your presence immediately regarding a mission to the Southlands.’ The servant spoke all in one breath, and as he finished he spun on his heel and began leading the way through the halls of Dampier’s mansion. Gabor wondered excitedly at this news; he knew there was being an expedition planned, and had hidden hopes of being sent along to document the proceedings.

They arrived in the main hall, where Dampier and a group of some ten men were gathered. They were all finely dressed, as wealthy nobility.

‘Ah, here is the young chap now. Gentlemen, this is my chief apprentice and one of the most gifted young writers you shall find in the Empire, Gabor Haas.’ Dampier said as Gabor followed the servant in. He bowed to each of the nobles and shook their hands.

‘You are aware, no doubt, of the expedition that has long been prepared regarding the Southlands?’ Dampier asked, fully aware of Gabor’s interest.

‘Yes, sir, I have heard rumours.’

‘And you were interested by these rumours?’

‘Of course, sir. I am quite intrigued and had hoped to tag along-‘

‘Ah hah! I knew he would!’ Dampier said, smiling around at the other men. ‘But you are getting ahead of yourself. You have no idea what you would be getting yourself into, Gabor. Allow these fine gentlemen to explain it to you. This here is the man who is funding the whole expedition, Mister Andrews.’ Dampier waved forward the fattest man among them, a man sweating from no exertion underneath his wig. His waistcoat strained against the buttons.

‘Well sirs. I have assembled a team of one hundred of the finest woodsmen, hunters, explorers, and beast-killers as can be found in all the land. They are a powerful and varied crew; we have been joined by a peculiar kind of Dwarf known as a Slayer and by a young Bretonnian seeking renown. All is set for us to venture to the Southlands. Our mission? Well, who knows anything about the Southlands? There is very little information to be found, and yet that is what this party aims to do. They are to adventure there, to create contacts with any civilizations that can be found there. You shall, if the legends are true, find monsters, the destroying of which will earn the explorers much renown. There are also riches to be had, gentlemen – it is well known that the creatures called ‘Lizard Men’ have settled in the Southlands, and we have all heard of their riches!’

The other nobleman nodded and smiled at the thoughts of the Lizardmen’s riches.

‘And you, Gabor, shall be accompanying these hundred fine soldiers and documenting everything – you should, perhaps, write a book out of what you find. It could be a fine read; include histories on the individuals, and you should become a mighty rich author!’ Dampier said, encouraging the boy.

‘So, if you are not too busy, I should like you to pack your things. Take all the equipment you shall need, and yet more – plan for all eventualities, I say! Off you go!’ Dampier said, beckoning Gabor away and turning his attention back to the noblemen.

‘Yes, sir. Thank you, sir!’ Gabor said, his voice vague as his mind became lost in dreams of dragons and piles of gold.
