Deko's Rockeaters - Update: Custom Carrying Case

I've been reading the forums here for a couple weeks, and now that I've got my first Bull painted, I figured it'd be a good time for a first post!

I'm running an escalation league here starting next month, and with the release of the new book, I decided to give Ogres a try.  I've been playing Fantasy for about five years now, with Vampire Counts, Empire, and Skaven, but this is my first foray into Ogres.  I'll definitely be spending some time browsing the Feeding Grounds to get some ideas on tactics and such.

Anyway, here is my first painted Ogre:



For the base, I wanted some watery effects, and I eventually settled on going for a muddy ground look, with the ogres leaving footprints and mud puddles as they march into battle.  I made a mistake with this first base, as the left foot should have a full print, not just a half print.  I'll fix that in future bases.  The rest of the figure is fairly standard.  I gave the metal parts a light coating of rust, and stippled on some mud to the boots and lower legs.

I'll be starting out with a 500 point force, working up to about 2000 by Spring, and perhaps up to 3000 or more after the escalation league ends.

Looks great! The finished product has a nice, crisp look to it. I especially love the water effect in the puddle on the base. Keep them coming!

It's been kind of a busy week, but I finally got another character painted, a Butcher/Slaughtermaster.




I'll be using this guy as a Butcher in the upcoming escalation league and will probably upgrade him to a Slaughtermaster later on.  As you can no doubt see, I started with the always popular Bragg, with a new apron and a different weapon.  This big blade is loosely based off the meat cleaver in Demon's Souls.

I left a spot in the back for a pack gnoblar to stand.  I might wait to add that until I upgrade to SM.

The weapon and the base look good. In fact, the base looks great.

Very interesting bases, I have never seen that done before. And they look great! Nice weathering and blood as well.

Thanks for the comments, I'm really glad you guys like the basing.  When I set out to make this army, I really wanted to make the bases look a little bit different than usual, and have some water effects.

Finished off the rest of the unit, including command.

Time for the rest of my army at this point, some Leadbelchers and Sabretusks.  This completes the first 500 points in my army!  Last week was the start of the escalation league I'm running at the FLGS, and the first time I've had the chance to actually play with them.  Game 1 against Wood Elves, with heavy shooting.  I had trouble getting into combat with them, but they had trouble killing any ogres, thanks to the occasional +1 T buff, and in the end it was a draw.  Second game was also against Wood Elves, this time an all dryad list.  It would have gone badly if her wizard hadn't miscast, destroying 3/4 of her big unit.  Today is week 2 of the event.

I was a little rushed painting these, I may go back and rework that middle one, the left arm and the barrel could use some cleaning.

Sabretusks, nothing special.  I was a week late getting these painted because they're so hard to get in stock right now.

I'm really loving how your models are turning out. don't be so hard on yourself the leadbelchers look great! 

Thanks, I'm glad you like them.  I like most of the leadbelchers, it's just that the pieces didn't all fit well together.  It's more obvious in the larger version of that photo.

Anyway, here we have the entire army together, with some much nicer background than my messy paint table.

Yesterday was the first tournament of our escalation league and the end of our 500 point limit.  I'm proud to say that my ogres tied for first place, with a victory against Goblins and Dark Elves, and a draw vs Skaven.  The Sabretusks were definitely MVPs.  In the game against Goblins, one took out a squig herd, while the other took down a unit of archers.  And in the game against Skaven, the two cats were the only thing left on the entire table, of either army!

So, after the holidays we go up to 1000 pts, and one of the things I'll be adding are these Mournfang.


I have too many brown colors in my army, so I decided to go with a white/gray color for the fur, and dark gray for the exposed flesh.  I also wanted them to look a bit less boar-like, so I changed them from tusks to fangs.  I think I'm starting to get good at the horns and such too.

Wow, I've really been neglecting this Gnoblog!  I've come along way since I last posted.  In fact, as of last weekend, I've completed a full 3000 pt army.  I'm pretty proud of how things turned out.  What do you guys think?

CHARACTERS
Tyrant.  Fairly unimaginative, I may replace him later.

Slaughtermaster.  Converted from Bragg, with a cleaver inspired by the game Demon's Souls.

Sabretusks.  Gotta love 'em.  One of them has been eating well, hasn't he?  That or she's ready to whelp.

Leadbelchers.  Great at making the opponents overestimate their shooting.

Mournfang Cavalry.  Beware their charge.


RARE
Ironblaster.  One of my favorite models.  I really like how the bronze turned out. The shield above the cannon says "Thus I Refute Thee" (The leadie driving doesn't understand it, but thinks it sounds cool)

Stonehorn.  This is a pretty impressive model.  I think my favorite part is the straps in his hands, oddly enough.  With such a big base, I wanted to add a little more scenery, so I added that vulture at the bottom.




Let me know what you guys think.  I can get some more angles too if you want to see something better.

Thanks for the comments guys, I'm pretty pleased with how things turned out, especially the bases.  Here's a pic of the bases ready and eagerly awaiting some models.

Ooh, I really like your bases! I was considering doing footprints in the sand for my Araby ogres, but wasn't sure how it would look. This has pretty much convinced me that it's worth doing!

You get a gnoblar so you can burninate the countryside

Finally got some power tools I've been wanting for ages, and for my first project I built a carrying case for rhe ogres.  The wood I used was softer than I might have prefered, and if I did it again there's a few things I'd do different to avoid some less than perfect right angles, but I think this should for now.



The inside consists of three spaces.  On the left is the books.  Currently I have the Army Book, the mini Rulebook, Blood in the Badlands, and half a dozen army lists.  I could squeeze the big rule book in there as well, though it would be a touch snug.
In the middle is the space for dice, tape measure, movement trays, and so on.
And finally there are the figure trays.  Each model has magnets on the bottom, strong enough to hold them to the steel sheets at the bottom of the trays with no falling over or sliding around.  The trays are tall enough for the majority of the ogres, but the larger ones have to go on top, which has extra height due to the design of the lid.  There are three trays and so far my ~3000 pt army only takes up two of them, leaving me room to expand easily.

I tried to go for something that would be at least slightly Ogre specific.  I have a case shaped like a coffin for my Vampire Counts army.
