Sword of Striking seems good to maximise use of his 4 Str 5 (or better with Buffs) attacks.
You are only losing 1 attack if keeping him in the second rank which isn't going to swing a combat, and I can see why a GW will do the job in this instance.
If keeping him on the second rank a Magic Banner might be worth taking to benefit the whole unit. Dragonhide, Flaming Banner, Banner of Discipline or Razor Standard spring to mind here.
