Dreadguts Tribe

original thread ↗

Having just ordered the new Ogre Batallion and four Mournfangs, I think it's about time to get started on the tribe.  So, pictures first, explanation after.

A little size comparison

So, welcome to the mountain home of the Dreadguts tribe (name open to suggestions), who would be a fairly unremarkable bunch of fatties were it not for two things.  The first is the fact that all members of the tribe cultivate thick dreadlocks, which tend to get a little longer for each year the ogre lives.  The second is the unusually dark skin (at least for ogres), which you will hopefully see more of later...

Well, one weekend later, and not a lot to show for it.  I'm at about 75% on the skin test, but I want to do one more highlight on all the skin, and another on the face to really make it pop.  What do you think so far?

very interesting skin color, and the minotaur to ogre is very nice too.

That's a cool theme! The dark skin looks pretty fantastic so far, easily among the better I've seen :) You may want to add some more texture to the dreads though. They kinda remind me of tentacles :P

But I look forward to seeing more of the Dreadguts!
It was a terrible, indescribable thing vaster than any subway train—a shapeless congeries of protoplasmic bubbles, faintly self-luminous, and with myriads of temporary eyes forming and un-forming as pustules of greenish light all over the tunnel-filling front that bore down upon us, crushing the frantic penguins and slithering over the glistening floor that it and its kind had swept so evilly free of all litter.
– H.P. Lovecraft describing the shoggoth in At the mountains of madness
Well, I've finished the skin on the test-Ogre, and the extra couple of highlight layers on the face worked exactly as I had hoped!  As per usual, this was the time my camera's batteries decided to die.  They're on to charge now, so I should be able to give you pictures tomorrow.  The recipe I ended up using was as follows:

1) Scorched Brown (x2 for even coverage)
2) Scorched Brown 2:1 Dark Flesh
3) Scorched Brown 1:1 Dark Flesh
4) Scorched Brown 1:2 Dark Flesh
5) Dark Flesh
6) Dark Flesh 2:1 Bestial Brown
7) Dark Flesh 1:2 Bestial Brown (Face only)

Ok, that's 6 highlights up from the basecoat, but I'm fairly sure I can condense the Scorched Brown/Dark Flesh intermix stages in to a single 1:1 layer.  Then again, the size of the Ogre model might mean I have to keep things as they are.

In other news, my new stuff has arrived, so I'm going to be cleaning, assembling and converting Ironguts and Mournfangs for a while.  I'm pretty sure that both are going to feature heavily in my army, so I'm not really going to bother with magnets for any but the musician and standard bearer in each, in case I want larger units later on.  The Mournfangs will be using the Ironfist configuration, while the Ironguts will make use of the spare Mournfang great weapons as well as the normal ones.

I've decided that I would like to mimic this picture for the cloth colours (OK, I like orange too).

@Shoggoth - there is a little texture on the dreadlocks (I rolled them out using a spare 40mm base for this reason), but I haven't gone any further than the base coat at this point.  A little drybrushing should bring that texture out more.

Edit

With charged batteries once more, here's the finished skin tone:

Ok, so a slight lack of progress of late, but as somebody else put it, I kind of have hobby ADHD.

I finally decided to get my metal Tyrant out of the stripping bath, and realised he's smaller than the slaughtermaster I'm working on (still), and I can't stand the head and gutplate he came with.  Some superglue, GS, and Minotaur parts later (good snack, them), I came up with the following:

The belly and neck still need a little finishing, then on to festooning him with plunder and (hopefully) then painting!  Right hand will be magnetised between a little axe and a greatweapon of some kind.

Love the guy with dreads reminded me very much of Tosh from Star Craft 2!  :D

Thanks Zolas.  I'll have that picture for my reference set too!

Thunder Lord Klement, I agree completely with the hair.  I was on the verge of trying to take it lighter than the skin, as that's what the majority of my source pictures seem to have.  I much prefer the darker version though.

Amazingly, I've managed to get a little further with the test model, so here he is:

The trousers, skin, and hair are all finished, but everything else is only part way there - any metalic highlights you can see at the moment are the result of the camera flash and your imagination... :P

Is the picture an accurate representation of the pants? If so, it could really use some more highlights, which I know you can do based on how well the skin turned out.

If by RAW, you mean "Reg06's Audacious Whims", then you'd be right.

The flesh looks good.  I like the reds in the highlights.  What colors did you use?  I've been practicing black fleshtones for some of my ogres as well.  I typically work from burnt umber through burnt sienna to orange with decent results(looks like Shaq in warm lighting).

The dreads are cool.  The varied lengths and tapered edges create a great effect.  However, I think they could use a bit more texture.  Right now they look a little too much like extruded play-doh.

I am really not sold on that minotaur conversion (reminds me of a pregnant ogre)  But I love dreadlocks so carry on good sir!
Skin looks fine to me bud :)
Yo, man 'dem dreads be kickin'.  I think those are great you had to go with a darker skin tone to make the dreads work right.
