man eater as a DOW? any good for vamp counts?

original thread ↗

I am thinking of running a maneater as a dogs of war choice and converting it to look like a were wolf for vamp counts. Does anyone have the points cost/stats etc? or know where they are? The base stats are on the GW page, but I would like to know weapon choices etc. would 1 man eater be better than a couple of bulls? I like the idea of it being immune to psych, stubborn and ld 8. I don’t want to buy a whole army book just for 1 model.

Cheers

Roc, your math is correct, but bereft of tactical considerations

yep that sums how i play =)
Sounds like a cool idea theme-wise, I've no idea how useful it would be for your vamp army though as he will eat up two rare slots...
What have you go in your army and how many points is it?

BTW we can't give you the full rules for Maneaters here for legal reasons.
Well like Hragged said we can't give you the rules but if you want them just go to you local GWS and look at the stores copy of the book. To give you and idea of points a unit of 3 will cost around and I mean around 280. I haven't really heard of a single Maneater running around in the game some time's I run two as body guards for my Tyrant, there tough!!! Three make a good unit, but you will have to protect them from shooting.
@Hragged it is 2000 points. losing 2 rare slots doesnt worry me as i normally dont use rare anyway. i was thinking of using it in my lahmian or von carstein list. i have some  von carstein thralls with wolf form, and thought that the ME converted to were wolves would complement thyem perfectly. my list changes alot but i love an army of fast movers. i can make the shambling horde work but i love my cav. if i kept the ME close to my lord, they are stubborn with ld 10! they seem as close to undead as you can get! i want them to be a shredder unit of 2-3? what does the cathy long sword do? do you have any suggestions for wargear?

cheers
chris

ps i wasnt wanting you to breach copyright rules, i thought that as ME are DOW, the stats, description etc might be freely available.

If you are going to use them as werewolves, then I would suggest three things: 1. don't give them armour. Try convincing a giant wolf to wear armour! 2. Give them Cathayan Longswords (+1WS, +1I, armour piercing). The attributes bestowed by the Longsword equal the kind of advantages of being a werewolf that the maneaters don't already posses. And 3. field them in a unit of two: small enough not to be troubled too much by enemy shooting, but large enough to break a flank.

If you are looking for ways to convert them, I would recommend an idea that's already been posted on this site (soz that I can't remember who it was). Essentially you get a Rat Ogre body, then get Wolf heads from the Gobbo Wolf Rider sprue, and replace the Rat Ogre heads with those, filling in any gaps with green stuff (as per usual). Painted well it looks amazing.

Well I hope this helps!

Here is a were wolf conversion I did using Orc Bodies and Wolf heads. I think for this the Rat Ogre would be better.  Enjoy the pics. BTW these got smashed when someone that was using them sent them back to me. Actually they were smashed with the rest of a 3000 pt vc army.  I used these as mounted VanCarstein.

I would give them Great weapons, they will smash any thing plus this gives you the magic S7 so it auto kills chariots! To make it fit the werewolf conversion give them a gaint bone to use like a great club!!! Good luck with the converion  and let us see it when its done.
The ME would use there own LD for stubborn tests, even in 12 inches of the vampire general, which is 8.
That is the same for all stubborn units/charcters or whatever is stubborn.

Yhis I have to check but I think I'm right,
DoW units do not use the LD of the general's army they are in, in this case a vampire counts army.
DoW units CAN use the general's LD in a DoW army.
I have to double check on that rule.
Remember that your other characters can not join the ME either.
@lichemaster oops thanks for that! i didnt know the DOW rules!

i am thinking of using the GW, but CLSword is more fluffy!! better abilities...i will go with the rat ogre and the wolf head as you suggested! sounds brilliant! thanks guys for all the input, much appreciated.

I like your idea but think it's only good for fluff.   Which fluff is half the game.   Maneaters are effective and give the VC's much needed toughness but are too expensive and use two rare slots.

Two banshees are fewer points and very difficult for most armies to handle.  I go for the banshees but then Banshees are partly what my VC army is fluffed around.
@kbolster12345
Great looking werewolf models, to bad they got smashed

@rocdocta
If for example you had a stubborn unit (LD 8) and it was in the generals 12 inch range and the general is LD10.
You lose combat by say 1 you can make a break test on LD9 as the general is close by.
If you lost by say 3 you can chose to use the units stubborn rule instead and roll on the units unmodified LD of 8.

With DoW units in OTHER armies they can not use  the generals unit or army battle standard.
Now take Man eaters within 12 inches of a Ogre Kingdom Brusier with the army standard since this is there army book they can reroll the stubborn roll if they fail.
Now take man eaters in a DoW army and have them 12 inches away from the army standard (this case a human) they would get to use the army standard as they are DoW units.
Just fleshing out the rule for ya.
@baldbeachbum i tried banshees alot, but in perth, there are alot of ItP units/armies around, which makes for 180points wasted. now if ItP was changed in 7th ed...that would be great!! i also like the idea of were wolves and for 90 points they are a real chainsaw unit.

@lichemaster thanks for all the DOW info! nothing like getting excited and not reading the rules properly!

i think that i will give them heavy armour to represent a were wolves great resilience to damage, and GW to show their insane strength.

is 2 enough? 1 could be shot apart but is more mobile, and 3 is getting expensive. so is 2 worth it?

cheers

Two of them is a good idea. Not too expensive points-wise, a bit too insignificant to devote large amounts of firepower too, and yet can take some shooting and can break a flank.

Banshee's have the ability to shoot without LOS plus they are Ethereal giving them a unique ability.  I do think Maneaters are nice DOW's but I've always had tremendous luck with the Banshees.

Yeah, if you are playing armies that are ItP then don't use the Banshee.
I also have had great luck with a Banshee, killing a stegadon (rolled box cars) from behind a rock formation (could not see the steggy) all the hits landed on the stegadon and wiped it out with one roll of the dice
Just thought I would jump in and say the Were wolves are Avians creations, check out his army diary in the gnoblogs section for more insight.

P.S. I think its a cool idea ;)
