Is it me that is understanding this wrong; When any spell targeting a unit with the rune maw.... the caster must choose another target...
Does this mean that our augments spells can possibly 5/6 not work on that unit?
Who will be the next Khan in the Ogre Kingdoms?

Barring a FAQ entry that basically rewrites the item, yes, your own buffs will rarely work. As such, I can only recommend the Rune Maw for lists that are running a very specific type of build. For a start, it's really not worth running both it and a Slaughtermaster at all.

As a note, read the very last line of the magic item description. Specifically targeting the unit. So augument spells that specifically target the unit are effected by the banner eg trying to cast Bullgorder on a 7+. Augument spells that dont specifically target the unit dont get effected by the banner and go through as normal eg casting Bullgorder on a 14+.
Same thing works for offensive spells. Pit of shades or commet of Cas dosn't have to specifically target a unit so they are not effectd by the runemaw banner but fireball does specifically target units so is effected by the runemaw banner.

Direct Damage spells MUST have a target according to the FAQ, so Pit and Dwellers can be bounced where as the Comet can't.

The boosted values also target the unit, they simply target all units in range. This is clear from the item's description itself. Whether this cancels the whole spell on a 2+ or just the effect on the RM unit is another question and up for debate.

It's not up for debate, the Rune Maw rules clearly explain what happens. It bounces to another target unless there is no other target in range, which there isn't. So it simply has no affect on that unit.

"When the banner detects a magical attack, ... deflects the magic of the spell, causing it to hit elsewhere." I think we may be in for a decent FAQ on the Rune Maw .... if they follow their own fluff.

Not necissarily so. Even though the spells are beneficial to the unit, the banner can still interpret them as an attack, much the way I regard healthy food. Consider:
"Beefquake's stomach constantly emits a low growl. When it detects a healthy salad, that rumble rises to a predatory roar and, his face glowing bright red, emits a deafening belch that deflects the waiter carrying the salad, causing it to be served elsewhere."

A buff would never be considered a salad ... unless it was a taco salad ... hold the salad.
[Just looking at the fluff] If they wanted to say spell they wouldn't have said attack.
60 pts tp bounce all spells off a unit (big enough to be worth the protection) where the army's lore is a buffing lore? Unless you are talking about that 10 x 2 unit of leadbelchers or 6x2 unit of sniping/poison BoP maneaters.

I know you can say the same (opposite) thing when you read just the rule and not the fluff. But I think it's more likely to be "we didn't mean your spells." .... of course for now I guess it means we can bounce a misfire on the artillery die on The Maw spell.

last errata clears the subject. Only ENEMY spells targeting the unit with the runemaw... case closed.
