Ironblaster question

original thread ↗

I am not super familiar with Cannons so I ask this.

Does the cannon actually have to have the "Target" unit within the 36" range? Or does it even target anything?

Could I place the initial target marker at the 36" mark and hope it scatters and bounces through a unit 46" away for example?

Basically, can I place the initial marker anywhere within 36" and have it bounce outside the 36" range?

Yes you can. The rules for shooting a cannon specificly say you can.

On a side note. A rule a lot of people don't know about.

You can not shoot a cannon if it has ANY chance of hitting a friendly model or a unit in hand to hand. That means at any point in a straight line 20 inches past the point you mark.

Some people use this rule to prevent cannons from shooting their big flying monsters. Fly up and land so that an enemy unit is right in front or behind the cannons line of fire. It makes their cannon ball placement a lot harder. Might help keep your magic carpet ogre or thundertusk alive. It could even be useful for scouting man eaters.
That doesnt seem right, what rule backs that up?

If its just an extension of the cant target friendly units rule then you couldnt fire a stonethrower if there was a chance it could scatter onto friendly.

lol, yeah I was going to get it for you just didn't have my BRB handy. Its a good thing to remember when your fighting a gun line. It may save your life.
Haha, yeah I didn't have mine either.  I gotta stop posting based off common sense and always remember Games Workshop's rules don't have to make sense, they just have to exist.

I'm gonna have to go to college for this stuff lol.

"fire the cannon at that dragon!"
"But sir, there is a 2.77% chance we hit that peasant bowman behind it"
"Hold your fire!"
its funny how ogres can now make a "crude" gun line of their own
