Bloodgruel and Miscasts

original thread ↗

I am trying to understand the order of resolution when a spell from the Lore of the Great Maw is cast with irresistible force (and hence also causes a miscast).

Do you resolve Bloodgruel first and then the miscast, or the miscast first and then (if the caster survives) bloodgruel?

The Bloodgruel description on p. 60 of the army book  says to roll the D6 for Bloodgruel "immediately after resolving the effects of a successfully cast spell".

The Miscasts description on p. 34 of the BRB says that when irresistible force occurs, "first resolve the effect of the spell ..." and "Once the effect of the spell has been resolved, the Wizard now needs to roll 2D6 on the Miscast table...".   Also, on p. 36 of the BRB in the Spell Resolution description it has a reminder that "you'll need to go back and resolve the result of the miscast as soon as you've finished resolving your spell effect."

"Immediately after" and "As soon as you've finished" both suggest that they are to occur after the spells effects have been resolved before other actions take place.  Since they are essentially saying they are to take place at the same time, going to another section of the BRB (p. 10) under the Sequencing section it says that when the sequencing of rules is not clear that it is the player whose turn it is that chooses the order.  This would suggest that we, as the ones casting the spell, would be able to choose which order to resolve the Bloodgruel/Miscast.

If so, which order would you use?  Would you resolve Bloodgruel first and then the Miscast? Or would you resolve the Miscast first?

If it depends, what circumstances would prompt you to choose to resolve one first over the other?

For example, if my Butcher/SM was down to 1 wound left, I would probably resolve Bloodgruel first to get the wounds up to at least 2 so that a single S10 hit won't kill him during the Miscast; but if he had at least 3 wounds I would probably resolve the Miscast first and then Bloodgruel (if he isn't removed from a Cascade) to heal back a wound.

Has this come up in games for any of you?  If so, how have you resolved it?
Since some spell lores have an effect on the casting of the spell (e.g. Lore of fire) or do extra damage (Light or Heavens) I would think you resolve the Lore before rolling on the miscast table.

someone rude who got it very very wrong...
The very important part that is being missed here is the CANNON rules do not say slow to fire.  The WARMACHINE rules say slow to fire.

You are still using the BRB rules but your only using the relevant part.  Many people are interjecting their own ideas that firing like a cannon is synonymous with being a warmachine, which it is not.

I don't really care either way it's a great unit but if your gonna discuss the rules atleast discuss the actual rules.
Resolve the spell first, lore attribute and all. Then resolve the miscast.
Attribute is resolved immediatly after casting the spell and before the Miscast as I see it.

I think we are all in agreement here:

Spell
Attribute
Miscast

I hadn't appreciated until now that the Butcher now gets the benefits of Toothcracker/Trollguts if he takes a hit. I suspect that balances out against the chance of him having neither spell.
today i cast a bubble trollguts and got IF.  when I rolled the S6 hit for the slaughtermaster and the firebully, the regen save negatd the miscast.

I so love NOT having our old miscast table. :)
