Hi there guys, Hragged gave me an invitation I couldn't refuse (out of politeness, he didn't threaten to get Mafia on me) to join the forum, and asked me to post a few pictures of the ogres I'm currently working on, and as I'd been a long time lurker here it's way overdue

Currently I'm working on a full Ogre army commission, the client's after some very high standard gaming stuff, so I've had a lot of opportunity to do some fancy stuff I wouldn't normally be able to do.

I also painted up a stonehorn for ebay (link if anyone's interested http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290607373521?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649#ht_2667wt_1141 )

Here's a unit of bulls, and the stonehorn, and shorrlt following will be some leadbelchers which I'm really happy with.

I'd really appreciate and feedback/comments/criticisms any of you guys have, I've got a lot more to come with this army and I'll try and take all of it on board.

Equally if you'd like to know recipes or how I did anything just ask.

Prob 95%done I'd say, just some last details to work out.

Nice and clean, very realistic-looking bases, and really cool OSL on the leadbealchers. A thing that strikes me thouhg, is that they look sort of plastic. This may be because of your undercoat. What brand and colour do you use? Too smooth undercoat makes things look plastic. I have found that Army painter white has very rough texture compared to their black, and even more compared to GW's sprays, and it looks like you could use more texture. Maybe go more extreme on the highlights as well, but that's just my personal preference. But again, solid work and fantastic bases

Cheers bud; I use pretty much exclusively GW stuff, the skin starts with dheneb stone, codex grey and chaos block, then I add adeptus battlegrey + dheneb for the glazey-highlight things, I think the shine may be exaggerated by being under a desk lamp though. I see what you ean about the highlights, but on such a great expanse of flesh things can start looking a bit mental if they go wrong so I've shied off from them thus far, the character odels may well get some though.

Nice work - crisp and clean, with a good coherent feel. I actually really like the snow white beasts, especially the mournfangs; the bones on the back of the seats look a little flat colour, but that might be the shot.
Would like to see a thundertusk to match those mournfangs - keep up the good work!

Cheers mate, he's had a lot of input into the project, so we've managed to work out a nice scheme between us I think, I can't accept all of the credit; the back and forth e-mails are prob into the 100s now

I think the white or off white is a really good way to get some stark contrasts into the army, as far as the yellow tint goes I can recommend painting them norally, and then doing a really thin glaze of gryphonne sepia over them, the more yellow you want it the more glazes, it works really well.

I wrote a tutorial that took me about 2 hours over on the warhammer forum, but my account got wiped and there's nothing the admins can do to retrieve it, so when I can summon up the will to re-write it I'll post it here and send you a PM, basically it's all done with citadel washes used as glazes fequently, but there's a few little techniques that can really help.

Hi singlemalt, second time hte trousers have been pointed out in a week, it's a valid point, but I think a worry would be with bright trousers that they may look a little too 'happy' if every Ogre had them, I've had to be careful with the characters so they don't get too jolly. I think it'd be a case of loosing the pattern and maybe doing a lighter shade if I were to do them brighter.

When I do my Ogres for myself over christmas I'm going to be havign soe hawk turquoise trousers

I base-coated it with the airbrush, but everything else is dry-brushing, glazing and washes, just loads of layers.

If I remember correctly I based it dheneb stone/commando khaki/shadow grey, and then worked the highlights up and the shading down from there - it's much easier to work bright stuff down than dark stuff up on such a large model I find.

Thanks very much spriten, I was quite pleased with how the chaos Ogres came out: I think the new O.K book has a lot of potential for people wanting to do 'chaos ogre' armies, or generally picking a monstrous race and running them as 'counts as' Ogres. Wayne Kemp of heelanhammer fame is making a clan moulder skaven rat-ogre list which looks pretty amazing, GW really openned up a lot of potential for crazy conversions etc, and the models lend themselves to it really well.

Quick question how did you do the fur on the Thundertusk?

I'm going to write up a full step-by-step this eve, I feelI should add to the forum, it won't be anywhere near the standard which Dredboi did his to unfortunately, but I'll do y best! Again give me a PM prod if I forget, my emory ain't what it used to be!

The ironguts is meant to be a Maw with a cog around it, as per my clients theme for the army (close tie-ins with the chaos dwarf chaps )

Big Thanks to Danne, who PM'd me after I genuinely forgot I'd said I'd write up how I did the thundertusk fur, gnoblar on its way to you Mr


So here's the breakdown, apologies that there's no pictures, as they always make things clearer, I'll try and make it comprehensible in their absence, if you're looking for a more professionally done tutorial I thoroughly recommend dredboi's thundertusk one!:

Priming - 1
(Assuming that your big boy is built) Hit the entire model with a couple of thin coats of halfords grey primer, it's the bees knees!

Priming/undercoating - 2
Chaos black all over - the model is already primed so you can do this with a paint brush or an airbrush happily, it doesn't need any more protecting/adhesive type prep.

Priming/undercoating - 3
From 45degrees Spray any very lightly coloured coat, I used grey primer again, but skull white or whatever would be fine - this is to 'Pre Shade' the model

Priming/undercoating - 4
From straight above the model give it a spray with the previous colour, or if you've one lighter use that - I stuck with halfords grey again.

Painting Next, 'A.B' means I used an airbrush, it's my no means essential, but it'll save you some time

Painting - 1
A.B, Shadow grey, thin coat - all over!

Painting - 2
A.B. From 45degrees and then right on top Space wolves Grey/Shadow Blue. (50/50ish, personal preference here, the next stage will darken it and there's more highlights to come, so it's not too essential to be precise)

Painting - 3
Thinned down Asurmian Blue GW wash, mixed 4:1 with vallejo glaze medium, keep this as thin and as regular as possible all over.

Painting - 4
**Drying time**, VGM takes a while to dry, be patient and only carry on once it's completely dry - I worked on some bases while I waited.

Painting - 5
Get your biggest drybrush and prepare for fun times! I use a makeup 'concealer' brush I think, just personal preference, flat and wide seems to be best for big furry things and bases imo. Space Wolves Grey/Shadow Grey 50/50 all over the model, but do it in a couple of layers, and concentrate more of them to the upper of the model, I find going 'across' the fur rather than following it works best.

Painting - 6
Still with the big brush (wash and dry it first) comes 75/25 Space Wolves/Shadow, drybrushed as ever this time it's not all over, just the upper parts of the model, and tufts on the back of ankles.

Painting - 7
Big brush again, final highlight/drybrush - 50/50 Skull white/Space Wolves

Sorted!

The dark skin bits were done with shadow grey base and then 3 or 4 washes of badab black/asurmian blue.

I think that's it.

Mournfangs are exactly the same type of method, but at no point is a wash involved (rhinox had a gryphonne sepia one because I thought it should look a little bit more grimy)

Colours used: Commando Khaki, Bleached Bone, Skull white, substituting SHadow Grey for Khaki, Space Wolves for Bleached bone:Khaki:Skull White 1:1:1 (roughly)

If you'd like more specifics let me know, I generally paint fur in the same way: light at the top, and using pre-shading to try and keep things 'natural'
