And welcome to my gnoblog. First I'll start with some boring background. If you don't want to read it, just skip to pictures below. So, techinically this is my second army. I played Wood Elves when I was a kid. About 7 years ago. I don't have them anymore, so I can't post any pictures. But they were not pretty.. I have not painted miniatures ever since. But I'm going to take this kinda slowly.
Btw, how do you pronounce gnoblog? Is it gno-blog or gnob-log? I guess it really is a blog, but gnob-log said rather fast and with high tone sound fun
Ok, to the army.
I bought the new Batallion. And I've been building those ogres for few days now.
First I wanted to practice just a little bit, before doing this. So I decided to make some bases first. Then I'm going to finish one ogre first, and let's see what happens then But, now I try to post some pictures.
So here is few bases I made. Those that I made 7 years ago were just painted green, snot green. So I guess this is kind of improvement :]
And here is the lucky number one, which I will start painting this evening.
It is sad that I don't own a real camera. But I'll try my best to take doable pictures with my phone :] And If I can borrow a camera, I'll try to take better pictures atleast from the finished models
Ok, I got some painting done this evening and here is the result. I don't think he is finished yet. But I'll leave him for now. I'm also too busy this weekend to do any painting, so you guys have good time to say something give me pointers or so, ideas maybe.. I think skin is hardest thing to paint and I'm not still sure what I should do with it. I don't even have too clear picture in my mind what I would like the skin to look like. Something between light grey and very light brown I guess, and dirty... But we'll see :]
Anyways, here he is.
Thanks in advance and see ya guys later.
I just want to say that English ain't my mother tongue, so it is far from perfect and I can just hope that you guys can understand me. And feel free to point out my spelling errors or major grammatical mistakes :]

I like that one. Very nice selection of colours. The metals look a bit too dusty though, like, you can actually see the pigments. Is it NMM by the way? If it is, I think you need more contrast and a more obvious lightsource. Oh, and the bases are awesome!
It was a terrible, indescribable thing vaster than any subway traina shapeless congeries of protoplasmic bubbles, faintly self-luminous, and with myriads of temporary eyes forming and un-forming as pustules of greenish light all over the tunnel-filling front that bore down upon us, crushing the frantic penguins and slithering over the glistening floor that it and its kind had swept so evilly free of all litter. Thank you very much.
I had to google for that NMM, 'cause I didn't know what it meant. (And I still don't know what it stands for.. I guess something like NonMetallicMetal?) But yes, it is NMM, since it is made for black basecolor, then I drybrushed two different grey tones on it. But your right, it kinda like looks that the light is coming from everywhere. I have to think about it. I probably could try to highlight it a bit more. (And darken them on the other hand.) More contrast as you said. And really keep the lightsource in my mind.
I like the colorset too, but I'm not sure how I should continue, do I want all my Bulls to have green pants or should I make other colors too.. I guess I like them to look like a solid unit and make them all with greenish pants. Maybe slight variations to play with.

Nicely done. The bases are good, which is super important, and the bull looks good. And more importantly, he looks dirty.

Hi,
Nicely done. The bases are good, which is super important, and the bull looks good. And more importantly, he looks dirty.
Thank you, I also like the bases. I even tried to make the grass areas kinda like spread correctly trough the whole unit, so the grass can kinda like spread from another base to other like it should really do.
But now for the other part of this post.
I made a fellow for the first Ogre.
This new one is called Gorhg and he is just so badass Ogre, that he won't even raise his IronFist if he thinks that the incoming attack ain't gonna make any serious damage. That's why he is basically just walking hands down towards the foe. And this is why he got that big scar on his chest (left boob). Even thou' that attack was coming for his hearth, he didn't bother to parry it. And that poor little high elf sure felt the fury of Gorhg after that strike.
Gorhg is also the next one in line to be his units Crusher, if the current one (who will be named later on) would somehow die.
Here he is. My phone's camera is somehow catching those "pigments" on those metal parts even too good, since I can't see them with my bare eye like that. It is smoother to the eye, but otherwise model is just like in the pictures.
This time I tried to think about the lightsource, so IronFist is highlighted only on the topside, also shoulderpads are darkertoned at the backside. Also sword is only highlighted on the top.
Thank you for your feedback once again.

MUCH better NMM (which indeed is short for Non-Metallic Metal), now it looks like a reflective surface. Nice scar as well. Maybe paint Gorhg's eyes?

Your drybrushing is leaving the model looking really dusty. I would go over the top of it with a thinned down wash of paint or one of the out of the pot washes.

Thank you very much He actually has fiery orange eyes, but they are indeed very dim.. I could try to add some volume in them. Even these ogres just have just too small eyes for me to paint Or it is very frustrating job. But rewarding yes.

I agree with Randriod, the models do look a bit dusty. It works great on iron, but not so good on skin. And I think that the last ogre has a scar on his chest, doesn't it? I have to say I like the idea, but it doesn't really look like a scar. It needs more of a raw look.

Hi again
It's time for new brutish ogre to join my army.
So he is called Grumus and as you can see, he have lost his right eye. And actually he is missing rightside ear also. Nobody really knows how he lost his eye and ear. Since he is a sole survivor of his original tribe, so there is really nobody to tell the truth. But Grumus says that he and his friends got surrounded by skaven and they had to fight weeks against those filthy rats to survive. Grumus is told to be only one to survive that fight, losing his eye and ear.
But as possible as the previous explanation, is that he just lost his eye and ear by gambling.
Anyhow he is now a member of this, not yet named, tribe.
Not much changed in painting technique, but yes I washed his skin, pants and actually metal also. As suggested.
Thanks in advance again. I think this is really helping me And also motivating me. Maybe after this I won't be posting pictures of every Ogre I paint. It might be boring to look at pictures of identical models..

It's really cool to see your NMM develop with each model you post. The metals are a lot smoother now, which is great, but it looks like the reflections got hidden under the wash. It's spot on if you want slighly dull metals though.

Hi,
It's been a while since last post. I have painted couple more ogres, but they aren't that much different from the latest post. So I didn't post pictures of them.
But, the reason I'm posting something is, that I thought I would make some kind of Bruiser out of the bits in the Batallion box. Since I'm probably only playing with friends, there should be no-one to blame me about not using a correct GW model for it. (Well to be honest I think there ain't any Bruiser BSB models done by GW?)
But this is still a work in progress, so it might come up totally different in the end, but. This will also be my first real conversion, so I didn't have the guts to try to change the pose of him..
But yeah, here is the idea:
I would really appreciate some thoughts, especially about the base. I mean, would it be too high? If I would like to add him in a unit of IGs or Ogres, would he appear even too high?
Well, of course I want him to stand out.. which he should with that huge banner.. -.- And probably by standing at higher base. Well anyways, thank you in advance again
Soggoth: Thank you once again. I really appreciate how you have been so active at commenting my posts.
Now that I look at the picture here.. It don't seem so high to me.. But I would really like modify his pose to be more like standing over there.. why would he be walking down that sledge anyway?

That bruiser looks awesome! Seriously, I didn't think such characterful models could be made from the ordinary bulls.
I don't think the base is too high, it's very high but not too high Just make sure your tyrant gets an even bigger one!

Oh you bet! I'm planning on making it epic
But for now. I got something to show again.
His my Crusher, Horg the Smasher, he is one of the well known old veteran ogres of his tribe. Pride of his black/greyish beard who likes to smash with his club or even with his deadly mantrap. And uses his sword, in addition to bring down more attacks, also to deflect incoming attacks. Hi has been in lead of his unit for years and have earned the respect of his fellas during many battles.
Paintingwise, I used a bit ice blue on the high lights of metals before using white. I think it turned out nicely, even thou' it can't really be seen on the picture
I also did the shoulderpad completely different than before. And I really think that is closer to reality on how that kind of metalpiece should reflect light, just gentle line of reflection. How do you see it?
Thank you and see ya again.

Your NMM is developing faster than the speed of light! You deserve a gnoblar
Horg the Smasher looks a bit different in hue compared to your other ogres, though? Just the photo, or was he made in warmer colours?

Well thank you very much. Didn't expect to get a gnoblar this soon.
Now that you mention it, I think I have got a little bit more touch on the painting. And yes models have become more colorful and warmer, not so statue like as the previous ones. I have actually tried to upgrade the previous ones little bit by washing the skin and pants to make them less dustier and also upgrading the highlights and washes on metal parts a bit. So some quick upgrades to make them to look more like a solid unit ^^
Well, I try to keep color scheme kinda earthly so that won't change beyond the army, but my painting "style" might wary some, since I'm still trying different things/techniques to find what I like the most :]

Well he is finished for time being, eyes are just painted fiery orange. Which is probably enough for me at this stage. I mean I don't really think I'm able to make more detailed eyes Just to hit the orange about in the eye of the ogre is pretty hard job for me So I need to read some tutorial or just get more touch to it, 'cause I don't want my ogres look just retarded with other eye staring at the sky and other at somewhere else. :]
But yes, I have moved to next model (7th standard ogre). And I'm also putting together some ironguts to get primed.

Hey! Long time no ocean!
I ain't dead yet, I've just been so busy with university stuff. But, I got my Ironguts started and here are the first two brothers of 'em. I was a bit hasty with taking pictures it seems. Since the glue with the grass has not dried yet. It will become "invisible" as it dries up.
Grugg and Grumus are the biggest and the brutest and the loudest of their family and they are proud to be part of the their tribe's Ironguts. Especially they like crushing those disgusting little skavens
So first couple of pictures from these two fellas. Naturally they got even more armor as normal ogres.
Left hand of this bellower looks a bit weird in this picture.. There is some yellowish cloth between the armorpads.. it's not even supposed to be skin. Still looks bad tho'.
Then couple of "close up" pictures of the old skaven weaponary I made from bits that I took from one of my old motherboards :]
As always, feedback is more than welcome.
EDIT: I don't know what is going on the pictures are resizing themselves even tho' I ain't doing anything.. hopefully they will work to you guys.. -.-

Nice nice! NMM is still awesome, looks like the gutplate on the guy on the right could use one more highlight but overall it's more than great, especially the left one's helmet. I dunno if the pants need some more work, yellow is really hard to paint and while I like the shade you have there, it looks a little like "washes gone wrong", if you see what i mean

Well, painted few more rank and file ogres to fill the ranks :]
These were pretty much my first "mass" produced models. Got a bit lazy with the moldlines and just look at that gap on the middle ones arm. oh my god
Well, basically I just played with the Irongut arms and those really made nice new poses for basic ogres too :]
Paintwise I tried highlighting the skin for the first time And for the metalparts I added some of that glossthing on the very sharpest edges of the armor/swords. (This really doesn't show in the picture at all I think..) Actually I tried creating better highlight/shadows on pants and boots too.
These three don't have names or background atm. They are like those red shirted fellas in star trek who are there just to be shot.
So for the picture. It's a bit messy :/ Yes I'm still using my phone's camera.
ooh, it's an image. Which means I'm still trying to paint. Slowly, but I'm doing it.
Actually I started converting a Maneater too. He would be some sort of old ogre who have worked for Skaven in his past. And due the battles lost his arm (or wanted it to be replaced), so Skaven engineers made him a Cannon with a sword to replace his arm. He also have a gnoblar to pinpoint targets to be shot :]
Totally offtopic:
I also played a small game against my friend who collects High Elves. (Also just started whole game) Oh boy it was a massacre. He indeed choose wrong warriors for the matchup, and used fast cavalry so wrong Also his mage forgot her only spell on the very first round via miscast.. I hope he still enjoyd the game.

I like the maneater, but it could use some detail to really make it impressive. Check this place out for tips on bioniks; http://www.the-waaagh.com/forums/?showforum=2 Mostly, it needs rivits. That is a simple and quick fix that will really sell the look. Here's an awful mock up of a couple easy things to do (I'm a bit bored at the moment). The lines across the barrel bit make it look like a bolted together tank of scrap metal, rather than the smooth high-tech apparatus the Skaven aren't known for. Rivits are always appropriate. And the badly done thick grey lines is supposed to be a piston (which wouldn't really do anything, but the worky bits don't have to be realistic, just cool). The gs parts could also use rivits, and maybe some wrinkle lines like they are supposed to be leather. Lastly, what sort of weapon is this supposed to be? A warpfire thrower? Warplightning cannon? Something else? That should effect what the barrel looks like. The blade, while neat, looks decidedly ogrey, and some more worky bits could go there instead and make this awesome (e.g. curved bits like on the end of the warplightning cannon).

o.O Thank you man, you completely blew my mind. Even thou it is a quick mockup, I totally understood what you mean. And you are correct.
It's weird how blind I was, somehow I thought it was already something. But heck no Next thing is.. how am I going to get this all together. Not very confident with my skill level.
And what type of cannon it is? Well.. honestly I'm not sure. First I thought about a weapon that would shoot small warpstone bullets or something :] But then I glued one of the warpstone-energylines (tubes) to the barrel, which could mean that it would be more like warpflamethrower kind of weapon. As stuff coming from black tube mixes up with the stuff coming from the barrel and it could create something devastating
Anyhow it represents this maneater's ability to shoot. (Ogre pistols.. oh well )
That piston is just amazing idea.. now I just have to create it..

Fortunately it's Skaven workmanship grafted onto an Ogre, so if it looks a little shoddy you're doing it right. The lines across the canister can be done by cutting into it a few times so they are visible, and then once painted and rivited it should look right. The rivits can be made by slicing up any thin rod, or making them from gs.

Sounds cool. If it's a flame thrower, that little notch near the end of the barrel needs to be sealed up or else the flames will spill out all over the place (alternatively, fill it with a chunk of warpstone to get across the idea that the fuel is shot across the warpstone and gets some power from that).
That piston is just amazing idea.. now I just have to create it..
The Waaagh has all the blue prints you'll ever need for this sort of stuff. But pistons are surprisingly easy- one tube inside of a thicker tube.
When doing this sort of scratch building, I highly recommend purchasing some plasticard (or scrounging it from found sources, like credit cards). It will make your life so much easier.

Once again Thank you! I actually tried to make a piston, and I think it turned out to be pretty decent. Sadly I'm once again overloaded with schoolprojects as the examweek is getting closer and stuff like that.
But my next post hopefully includes 4 finished IGs and upgrade photo for the Maneater.

Soooo.. long Christmas holidays and I had like tons of time to paint.. not! I thought I would be painting like alot. But I didn't paint anything. -.- great. I had few games thou', and that's cool.
But now I have been working on some stuff again. I painted 4 IGs more, they are nothing special and those yellow pants are still so bad. But here is their Crusher, let's call him Rokk for now. (In my dreams I'm going to write a solid fluff for this tribe someday )
This time I didn't use any grey on the metals. Maybe their something like enchanted.. or elven steel or something.. dark mithril, who knows.
I also started painting the beasts of the tribe. And they are somehow red :]
As I was painting this Rhinox, my girlfriend called him "Erkki", which is Finnish name which would be something like "George" in english. So now he is Erkki or George.
I also gave some color for two mournfangs, same theme.
I'm also still working on that BSB I posted earlier I think I just can't concentrate on one thing, I have 10-20 WIPs at my table at the same time.. But oh well, I want to enjoy making them, and this is the way I enjoy it. I will get them done someday :]
Hope you like them

And I probably will from time to time try painting him better. But here is what I got now :] Have fun. As you probably already know, he is made out of normal ogre without too much gs work.
comments are always more than welcome
.. I know, I should also comment all those amazing gnoblogs out there -.- ..
I just want to say that English ain't my mother tongue, so it is far from perfect and I can just hope that you guys can understand me. And feel free to point out my spelling errors or major grammatical mistakes :]

Thank you And I will post pictures of the banner as soon as I get it painted I just don't have any ideas what kind of mark I would like to paint on it. Of course I can leave the banner without any markings for time being and add it later. Well.. let's see if I can get any ideas

I guess so
I was just thinking of some kind of own variation of the maw mark for this tribe Something more unique, but still recognizable as the maw. Problem is that my tribe don't have a name or background yet

Hi,
So I did after all paint the bsb banner too. somehow. And I might finally have some sort of idea to follow with the tribe's name and maybe fluff
Dawn of the Maw
or
Rising Maw
you get the point Feel free to suggest cool themes including "half" Maw.
Well, I did get couple of pictures too. And big thanks to my friend who gave me the dragon head ^^
and from back
I think that I might like to add some dragon blood on that spike, but I leave it for now. Since I really don't know how to paint blood
see ya 'round

. . .
So. It has been 'baut one and a half years since last update.
I guess "I've been a bit busy isn't really a reason" Oh well, I haven't done that much interesting stuff anyways. Mostly gaming and painting basic guts, bulls and belchers.
But a very interesting thing happened not so long ago as I was getting ready for one gaming evening and wanted to finally paint my gnoblars. My girlfriend asked if she could paint something so I gave her a gnoblar to paint. That evening she painted a whole bunch of them! Here's few
And that's not all, she enjoyed it so much that she bought a battalion box of vampire counts and have now played with them few times Guess she still surprises me from time to time.
Well this of course got me very motivated with this hobbying again and I painted Ironblaster, three mournfangs and one maneater rather quickly. (I took pictures but they are very very blurry.. I'll take new ones later)
I also got very interested in creating gnoblar kingdoms army So I started making some gnoblar firecrackers. Here is a rather blurry teaser picture of 'em.
I'm also working on gnoblar flappers and I think I can say this is my first real own miniature as he is made from plasticard and greenstuff by myself apart from his head. I'm kind of pleased how he turned out.
A while ago there was a nice thread about using giants and I also wanted to try a giant in my lists, so I started roaming around internet to find a mini I'd like to use as my giant, as I don't for some reason like the GW giant that much. After a while I thought I'd like to have some sort of StoneGiant. You know?
Maybe animated by gnoblar shaman I had no idea how tall GW giant is, so I thought "As long as it is something like twice as high as ogre" And I found this guy, which I like:
And here is some size comparison with an ogre
I'm planning to make him stand in a bit more straight position and of course give him a cinematic base so he should be just fine
Thank you for your time and I know this time I don't have much to show, hopefully I can recover my gnoblog and keep myself motivated!

It's great to hear your girlfriend is taking an active interest in your hobby! It's a great feeling, right!
The Gnoblars are looking really solid, and I particularly like the Gnoblar Flapper!
On the topic of the giant, I really like the concept, but I just don't think the model fits the bill. It's a little short, even by the logic of being twice the height of an Ogre. Maybe mount him on a scenic base that adds even more height, and I am sure it will work very well

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.
And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

It sure is! And on top of having common hobby, which itself is great, having 1.5mx2m gaming table for small plastic toys isn't that weird anymore

I know. He might be a bit short and maybe not so bulky, sadly. :/ I actually didn't find very good info about his height before I bought it. So I did kind of hope he would have been a bit taller to start with. But we will see what I can get out of him! I already tried to pick up some height by using a bit of green stuff.
I also started mocking up some sort of base for him, represented by one Firecracker And yes, coffee mugs are there to keep him stay still while waiting for glue/greenstuff to dry.. Extremely high tech!!
Even as being a bit smallish for a giant, I think that amount of stone falling on you is definitely gonna hurt some

I have been lucky enough to have two previous girlfriends actively engaged in my hobby, one to a greater extent that the other. Like you've said, it's nice to have that commonality As well as the excuse for a gaming table is entirely valid now!
I like what you've done with him so far, and whilst relatively simple, it already seems to have improved the issues with height Looking forward to seeing the finished article!

Giant is getting some paint on him slowly. But anyways I had a 1500pt game yesterday against High elves and I did try the giant.
First of all, I got 995 VP and my friend got 1015 VP, and that's probably most equal points I have every played. So it indeed was fun game. But about the giant:
First couple of turns I did not get any buffs on him and he took quite a few wounds (4 to be exact), "good thing" is he did attract quite a lot of enemy fire towards him. Mid game he was in my buff bubble with +1T and regen and he killed 200pt of helf archers all by himself without taking any more wounds and he chased them off the board in turn 4. Now this was going quite nicely, turn 5 he came back to play and got ready to charge one bolt thrower for few more points. But nope, turn 6 I charge a bolt thrower with regen buff and 2 wounds left. Those 2 helf crewmembers both rolled 6 for wounds and my giant did not regenerate neither of them and died. It was sad. My giant gave his last effort falling right on top of the helfs doing only 1 wound and leaving the bolt thrower still alive.
So he did make his points back and absorbed quite a load of enemy fire during the game, which was nice, but I still hope he can do better. And this really depended on the buffs I got him, without those he would have been dead on turn 3 or 4. Although if he would have killed that bolt thrower and survived the game I would have said he was performing very good
So yay!
(Next week: more pictures of ogres 'n' stuff! ) And this never happened -.- shame on me..

His performance was pretty solid to be honest. He absorbed a lot of fire that would have been a lot more detrimental if it had been on your Ogres, and he earnt his points backs which is all you could ask for. Without buffs he would have died quite fast, so I really do feel he needs them to be effective, but that's not really too big of a problem
I am very impressed; it sounds like one of the best outings for a Giant, I have heard in a long time!

Hello there again. I think I might have forgotten to post about my one month trip to Nepal before disappearing. But yes, I have been to Nepal for a month so obviously no updates because of that. Here is anyway something quick and short about my trip.
One highlight of my trip was obviously a 16 days trek to Annapurnas (classic Annapurna Circuit). Which included quite a lot of climbing and cold streams
But in the end this all was rewarded with beautiful and inspiring scenery and experiences.
Highest point of the trek was Thorong la pass. (5416m)
One cool place was Poon Hill at sunrise.
Dog enjoying sunrise too
Maybe next time more warhammer stuff again

I really am one of those gamers who takes years to finish an army. And I know some of you just can't understand that. But what can I say? "I've been busy." "I like to take my time." or "I'm lazy!"
What ever it is, I'm here again to post something.
First of all few almost ready CatRiders. Which I accidentally assembled with great weapons 'cause they looked so cool! I totally forgot that I always equip them with Ironfists.. Oh well, lucky my gaming group ain't that picky and wysiwyg isn't that important
Banner of course has my (Outstanding! ) freehand half Maw of my tribe.
And even tho' I said I would not post any more teaser of that giant, which I'm still working on, I will post some teasers I got some paint on him and actually glued it to the base, which I normally don't do before the mini is fully completed. But for some reason I liked this way more comfortable with this quite big metal figure.
No I did not live the golden age of metal figures so I don't really have experience with them. I had wood elves (about 6th edition) when I was kid and painted couple of metal treemen but yeah..

Well, I had some time in my hands to be honest. And I did not use it to finish up my giant, of course i didn't
Instead I wanted to do some new terrain for our gaming group, as we don't have too much of it yet. I stumbled trough my bits and stuff just to once again find my few Bretonnian models.
Storytime: Once upon a time some 8 years ago when I had already been on a break from wargaming for 'bout 1-2 years I got inspired again to play Warhammer and bought few boxes and blisters of Bretonnia. Just to notice that I never even put them together. So I didn't start to play again that time. Then again 2011 when I made this gnoblog I started playing Ogres and to get some funding I tried to sell my old Bretonnians, but nobody wanted my bsb, damsels and 1 box of basic knights. So I still have them. Now I wanted to make some use out of them!
So I thought, I want to make a statue! And what better to use for a statue than a real model? Good thing I got few knights to spare. I didn't want to make him just boring stone one, but more of those old greenish/blackish ones. What are they even made of? Feel free to educate me if you know.
Rules given in the picture are just something I quickly made up, so this could be just impassable terrain too.
After this I looked at the standing Damsel model and thought: "I want to paint a vampire just 'cause my girlfriends vampires looks so cool!" And started making a vampire out of that Damsel. With some skulls, sword and dark paintscheme, I think she could go for a vampire. I don't know if my gf ever wants to use it, but at least there is now one extra if she ever needs one!
If I learned something about painting metal figures, it is that they are darn annoying to paint! No matter how carefully and with multiple thin layers you basecoat them, paint will chip of the edges during the painting process.. And as I didn't use any varnish to finish them up, paint will probably keep on falling. Oh well..
And to continue with the vampire theme! I started making a graveyard terrain piece, a small crypt. Maybe I'll make a modular graveyard and this will be a perfect piece for that. But what is even better, is that it is exactly the size of 6 20mm bases. So if someone needs a unit filler for ghouls, for example, this fits the bill quite good in my opinion.
From this angle it is quite hard to see, but the door of the crypt is badly battered from forcing it open by brute means. And again I borrowed some pieces from the Bretonnians.
Comments are always welcome and I'd especially like tips for painting metal figures and about the Object Source Lightning (the lights that is from the torch) as this was my first try on this kind of technique. This http://blog.brushthralls.com/?page_id=1916 was very helpful on that matter tho'.

Hello there fellas, I think it's time for little update as we are heading to the countryside to spend a peaceful Christmas. Which means, no miniatures and no computer. Alas there isn't any snow anymore so it will be just dark and wet. To get and idea about length of the day, sunrise today was 9:43am and sunset was 3:05pm, so it is rather dark. And that's pretty much the reason for these dark pictures I'm about to share.
We started a small terrain project together, it will be some sort of ghost house, tavern maybe? Some ghosts wandering in the windows, dark colors and strange lights glowing. You know what I'm talking about Idea was to first make a structure for it with painting paper and then cover it with balsa, plastics, flock and sand where needed. This is where the project begins:
Then we added some wooden parts and sand. Sand is added to give the walls some texture. We'll see how it turns out when it gets some paint on it.
And this is the mess where we are working at. Some gingerbread and glogg at hand of course
And my newest addiction, cool colored dice!! I have always just had those red/black gw dice, but now we have more colors. Like these beautiful little luck bringers here:
We also have some dark green transparent dice, very evil.
I also played against High Elves again with my giant! The game was disaster, but giant did rather well. I managed to get a charge with it against some (9 or 10) silver helms (thanks to redirecting and harassing sabretusk). First round of combat was just yell and bawl (which of course is rather stupid against high elves), but second round it killed all but 2 of them! Of course those pesky helfs rolled insane courage and stood around to fight another round of combat.. Giant swang his club on the last turn of combat and wiped out those remaining silver helms without even stomping. It took 2 wounds on this last turn, so total was 4 wounds to the giant and 9 or 10 silver helm wiped out. Made its points back. And all this was without any magic support!
But that's all for now, thanks for staying with me and happy something-politically-correct!

Time for and more ogreish update this time. I got some converting at hand, oooh.
But first things first, which will be terrain again! Well we don't have any ponds or lakes or rivers in our gaming group's terrain collection at this moment. And this is sort of sad. So I decided to give a try for a simple pond. Plan was to try using wood glue + water mixture to create the water effect. For this plan I was planning to use my hot glue gun too, but of course it just had to break down. So I was thinking if I could use clear plastic sheet to create some sort of water effect. You know the kind of plastic that some use to protect their books.
Anyways, this is at least a very very quick way to create ponds.. just cut and stick. I glued some weeds under the plastic and some on top of it, looks fine to me. Problem is that it makes the plastic too uneven. (this can be seen in the next picture)
Is that the moon? I like the little wavy look it has, but that one big one just before the weeds is a bit unnatural.
Anyways I guess it is good enough to start with. Easy and quick, still looking better than blue cardboard or something. Feel free to ask if you'd like to know more.
Then for the ogres. I started converting/kitbashing myself one more maneater and a Beast Butcher.
Maneater is coming straight from the Mereen Fighting Pits, which means he is so epic that he can travel between worlds. I thought this kind of fella would enjoy fighting with just ironfists for their brutality. He will have a nice tan and hopefully lots of scars. No armor, but he has endured so much slashes and cuts that one could think he has like Toughened skin 5+ instead of Heavy Armor or something.
I'm still brainstorming ideas for the butcher, but he is going to be some sort of shamanic/druid caster (Lore of the Beast anyone?) I would like to try to create some critter(s) around him. Maybe carry a totem or two on his back? Skulls of course could work, maybe couple of emerald/ruby skulls? The magical effect on his hand is just a thought.
Any feedback is most welcome. And cool ideas for butcher are always worth a gnoblar.

Oh good ol' slayers! Maybe change his cute knife for a huge axe! Now that you mentioned that he could be a maneater, I noticed that I gave him a gutplate. Which isn't something that butchers normally wear. I might have to rethink this one!
Today's news

I have good news for you in that case dreaded 13th does not work on monstrous infantry, at least as far as I know.
On the other hand, I dislike cracks call and scorch.. And as I assumed, there was 2 WLC + Doom wheel Also the orb of Iniative test made an appearance. But after some luck and genius playing (not really ) I managed to win for a change!! Haven't won against skaven in too long time.
Have to make few quick notes for the battle rep so I won't forget anything important.. Because I can't write it just now as I have 2 assignments to do for uni, which now need my immediate attention. meh :/

That's the way of the Skaven! But ok, in the Skaven player's defense. I heard from somewhere that dreaded 13th could be cast on ogres in the last edition, because there was no such a thing as monstrous infantry. He might not be aware of this change.
But here is a bit from Skaven FAQ
Q: Can The Curse of the Horned Rat affect a unit of Monstrous Infantry? (p79) A: No

So I had a 1500pt game against Skaven few days ago. I have had tough matches with Skaven lately and I have lost few games in row against them. So I wanted to try something completely different this time. I wanted to try hard to kill Tyrant running solo. 2 Firebellies instead of Slaughtermaster to give me offensive firepower. Gnoblars to soak up damage from doomwheel, just if I can keep gnoblars closer to that thing than my ogres. Scraplauncher to kill those hordes of rats. Scouting maneaters to get rid of one cannon early. So my list was as follows:
9 x ogres (firebelly with scroll of shielding here) - ironfists
4 x maneaters - 2 x BoOP - 1 x OP - standard -- gleaming pennant (these guys are far from home and losing one body means 25%)
sabretusk sabretusk sabretusk
Scraplauncher
Skaven was quite the same that I often face at this point level.
Grey seer lvl4 BSB engineer lvl1 engineer with brass orb
2 x clan rat bus (engineer is with one clan rat bus and grey seer+BSB is in the other) -ratling gun 2 x slave bus (orb engineer is with one slave bus)
3 x rat dart(packmaster + 5 rats) gutter runners (6 this time) 2 x WLC 1 x Doomwheel
TERRAIN
We often agree the terrain pieces we are going to use together and then randomize their places with a lot of dice rolling. This is what we got, call it what you want but Skaven got to choose the side this time.
DEPLOYMENT
I know that we are using quite a few 'alternative models', hope you won't curse us to the deepest hole. I have model for scraplauncher but it is unpainted so I'm using ironblaster instead. I don't have model for second firebelly or tyrant as I don't often field them. I will have them eventually of course. I don't have sabretusk models either as I don't know what models I would like most.
I hope you can get an idea of the deployment even with all these things. Bare with me, we just want to enjoy the game
drawn mockup
THE GAME
Well it seems that I cannot remember what happened on which turn even tho' I had camera with me. Yes I forgot to take enough pictures while playing. But instead I'm trying to explain key events in something similar to chronological order.
Ogres were so eager to fight that they got the first turn. Ogres were marching hungrily towards Skaven hordes, but as soon as they noticed those two nasty Warplightning Cannons standing against the horizon and this pesky Doomwheel doing donuts between Skaven slaves, occasionally killing few of them, ogres halted and had decided to take a bit cover from nearby buildings. Gnoblars were sent to the open ground before ogres themselves. Firebellies started mumbling their spells and ogres were eagerly waiting for some overcooked rat and fireworks. First Firebelly was launching 10+ fireball with two dices and miscasted. Oh the odds. At least it ended up killing almost ten clan rats and only slightly wounded one ogre. Sadly rest of the power dice was lost. Gnoblars prepared the catapult and hurled some forks down on the clan rats killing couple more.
go forth my little gnoblars, trigger all the traps for us would ya?
Skaven workers prepared to bring down some havoc with their warmachines, but managed to melt down one cannon. Other cannon shot at Scrappie slightly wounding it. Doom wheel stopped doing donuts and started towards ogre ranks. Gnoblars right in place to take the hits from ZZZzzzaaap doing just the reason I took them along in the first place. Gutter runners assaulting my ogres had to first chew trough the other gnoblar unit and they killed few of 'em, but gnoblars were still holding them back. Skaven magic was mostly dispelled and warplighting backfired causing a wound on engineer.
engineer trying to kill itself
Ogres got so inspired of the troubles Skaven were having and especially from one cannon melting down that they started to gain some momentum in their bodies. Rushing towards the Skaven lines. Firebellies were now concentrating their magic against the approaching Doomwheel, lone Firebelly stepped behind the house his hands already burning bright ready to hurl down some fiery balls! Throw 2 dice and miscast again!!! Well again just models in base contact (none) are taking hits so Firebelly is safe, but this again hurts the magical impact as I'm again losing my power dice. Scrappie missed the target and Maneaters are fighting rat darts from left and right while they are trying to get the other cannon. This was supposed to be quick job for the Maneaters, but they are struggling with rederictors.
out of my way you pesky things I have cannon to destroy -.-
Skaven lines are still trusting their warmachines and slaves. Slaves are starting to march forward behind Doomwheel while clan rats are still staying behind with grey seer, bsb and one engineer. Doom wheel is rolling fast and gets a charge against ogres front. Cannon is again trying to finish Scrappie, but misses. Doomwheel on the other hand kills 3 ogres with zZzap and one and half more with impact hits. This thing is seriously starting to worry my ogres. Half of us gone!! Have you heard what happened last time? This thing ate whole unit of Ironguts! (Is this too complicated English for ogres? Should be more like Big wheel bad! Me out here!) Anyways my Firebelly within the ogres is starting to feel that it is now or never time for some breath weapon and turns this thing to great pyre! (rolled 11 hits) Ogres following his lead and starting to smack the thing down with all they got. After all the fight was draw so it is going to next round. Gutter runners cleared gnoblars out of their way. Ratling gun managed to destroy itself and magic was again very ineffective. Grey seer was not able to cast much and engineer tried to cast warplighting on one of my tusks just to get rid of it. As the engineer was screaming and concentrating his power to zap it from his hands he managed to backfire again and killed itself.
Maneaters were finally free of chaff and are getting ready to destroy that cannon they were sent to destroy.. Gnoblars charge the flank of Doomwheel while lone firebelly and my lone tyrant start rushing toward the clan rats and their leaders in hope for an cheap assault. Tusks are pretty much running among the skaven lines and behind them ready to give me some nice flank and rear charges when needed. Scrappie lands a direct hit on clan rat unit wounding(yes wounding) some 13 rats.. Sadly that rat armor is tougher than expected and it only wounds 3 of 'em. Oh I was already laughing in this point but no. I rolled 3 power dice for myself and got dispelled the little I tried to do. Doomwheel was absolutely ineffective this turn, which gave my ogres and gnoblars a good chance. All pumped up they started hacking the doomwheel down! (Gnoblars were actually the only ones landing any wounds on the thing.) Doomwheel found the rear gear and started and desperate flee trough marshland, but gnoblars ran it down. Go gnoblars!!
At this point ogres already started to bellow quite loudly, rats started to question themselves as the superior race. But this of course was just a distraction! Despite the losses ogres started to tighten their net rushing on rats from all directions. Tusks were getting in perfect positions sneaking behind the enemy lines, Tyrant and lone firebelly rushing to perfect charging points near clan rats and ogres rushing head on despite the losses. Skaven had one last chance to do anything, and it gave it all. Starting with cannon firing one last time over Maneaters rushing towards it, finally destroying the Scraplauncher. Slavebus and engineer moving towards ogres throwing Brass Orb at them. Just he didn't manage to throw it but dropped it and exploded in his own feet killing couple of slaves. Grey seer tried to six dice crack's call on my Tyrant as a last attempt before his certain doom failing to get irresistable. Which gave me a chance to scroll it down. Skaven resistance was done..
Ogres bellowed from the bottom of their guts while charging towards skaven units, I had 6 charges completed against 2 different slave busses and one clan rat bus, where grey seer and bsb were hiding. Ogres and 2 firebellies ate up one slave bus and ogres overran to clan rat unit where Tyrant was having some serious fun by himself.
My Tyrant was just laughing while those pesky little rats were trying to land a wound on him. With Mawseeker and Trickster Helm 8 S3 clan rat blows has about 3% chance to land a single wound if I'm correct. Anyways when it was my tyrants turn he allocated all his 5 blows (all hits thanks to fiery sword of rhuin) against grey seer and killed it in one round despite te 4+ or 5+ ward save it had. Now you, my dear reader, can have a cookie if you really read this far. Just ask for it and I'll make it for you.
my proxy tyrant for this game is such a poser!
At this point my friend called it a game. He didn't have anything left that could wound my characters.
AFTERMATH
Idea of running couple of my characters solo was to give my opponent multiple targets. It has often been too easy for skaven to concentrate all fire to the biggest and baddest unit. This time he had to think again, which was nice.
In previous game Doomwheel completely devastated my ogres. This time I wanted to try and run few gnoblars. Only purpose was to rush them towards doomwheel and keep it shooting these worthless greenskins. This was total success.
Firebellies have great potential of destroying skaven. Fireballs, rank piercing firebolt (d3 S4 hits per rank) and breath weapon are very lovely things. And 2 is better than one! I didn't miss trollguts in this game at all.
Even if the Tyrant is not the most optimal choice for us, it was darn fun Trickster helm is fantastic against something with S3 (even S4 if you have Mawseeker). 6+ to wound, now go ahead and re-roll them. :')
Of course I was very lucky with skaven suffering so many misfires with warmachines! And neither of us got any real magic done, which probably benefited me more.
BATREP
Yes this was probably my first real battle rep and it needs to be improved if I'm going to continue doing these. But that's probably happening by doing them I suppose

Hi! Just a small update on the Mereen Pit Fighter Maneater.. Dude. MPFMD.
So I this guy is from Mereen, which is kinda sunny place and I was going to try some sort of tanned skin for him. But as I was stumbling trough my paint pots, I thought I might just go for colored ogre. Pants and leather's were supposed to be more desert-like than most of my army. (Now I remember why I hate painting such a big areas with yellow.. -.- And after all the hard work the pants are quite crappy. At least I can always say that they are just so damn dirty as this guy has traveled with them across the fantasy worlds for last fifty years.. that's why they are crappy ) Armor also has the slight orange tone of southern sun.
What I actually wanted to try with this guy was scars. As I didn't quickly find any painting tutorials on them, I just tried what I felt might work. And I some what like the result. It's better than my first attempt on scars, shown in this blog too, which I made with greenstuff and red paint.
Not long ago there was a topic here about unit fillers and of course some thoughts about ogre unit fillers. I tried to think of a ogre unit filler back then just 'cause I haven't seen many of them, I couldn't figure out anything. But yesterday I had an idea about leadbelcher unit filler, a cannon, that would stand on 80mm wide and 40mm deep base. You could fit two ogres behind it as a crew so it'll work normally when removing casualties too. (If you drop down to 1 model then just replace the whole filler with one already dead model.) I run my belchers in 2x2 format when I use them so this would even look like they were actually operating the cannon.
I haven't done anything yet, just thought I'd share the idea.

Nice looking ogre, and the scars look good is it just pink paint?
Pirkkalalainen28 Jan 2014
Thanks! It's pink paint with a bit of commando khaki on top actually. After painting the pink lines, they seemed too bright so I dry brushed a bit command khaki (or is it karak stone or something these days) on top of the scars to dim them down a bit. Nuln oil wash all over the skin.

Hey Pirkkalalaninen,
Have you ever seen this;
It does have a small section on painting scars, although more relevant to white/ pink skin. they are often much redder than normal skin tone. On black skin they tend to be more pale like white/ pink skin.
Anyway, have a look and see what you think. Think it's page 2.

G_H: Thanks! I have not seen that painting tip sheet, I could use other tips in it too! (Or I just didn't remember seeing it) I like those pictures of scars too, I might have to keep on trying to do them on other minis too. Ogre Scar-vets.. Maybe next time I'll try to use a bit green stuff to create slightly raised ones again. (This is actually something I have tried before as mentioned)

Thank you very much Jimmy!
It always amuses me when people call me Pirk, because it associates very strongly with certain galactic captain to me. If you like star trek and bad humor, you might want to check this parody movie. http://www.starwreck.com/index.php
The movie is bad in many ways, but it was made with zero budget without any real actors, without real studio or anything by bunch of star trek fans. (There is photographs in FAQ of their homemade studio) Anyways in the movie their captains name is Pirk, which is combination from Kirk and Picard.
Their next movie Iron Sky is a bit better already, some real actors and some funding even.

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.
And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

Pirkkalalainen17 May 2014
Thank you for you words G_H How could I leave you?!
Alrighty then, what have I actually wasted my time on during my absence? First I was snowed under a handful of time consuming school projects, which kept me away from painting very well. I might have assigned for a bit too many courses this spring and so I spent most of my days sitting at my computer doing exactly and only this.
As I study to become computer nerd, most of my assignments means loads of coding. And that's what I have been doing pretty much every single day for couple of months. I'm not complaining, I enjoy it. Boring part is the documentary, as I have probably written over 100 pages of documentary for uni assignments too.. blah.
We got few warm days in Finland in April. And I was lucky to spent one of those good days with one of my friends on a rather pleasant scenery. So I have had some time to relax too. occasionally..
As I might have told, I was looking for a summer job. Well I actually got one, Yarr! I'm very happy about it, it's a job I enjoy and I get to do what I have been studying. I had to start it already as part-time tho', before my summer break actually starts. So this means that first I'll be coding at work and after I get home I'll be coding for school assignments
Somewhere between I have been working on some 40 handmade wedding invitations.
Oh yeah, I'm getting married to a warhammer loving girlf next September. (Yes this was already planned before she got into the hobby)
And somewhere between all this I actually had a little project. Few years ago I made myself a clumpy, big, ugly and damn loud ghettoboomblaster for summer picnics and other events. It was great thing, but way too heavy. Now I wanted to make a little brother for it. This one is so small compared to it. And not so loud obviously But this is already a looker. Made from old small dresser.
Of course it works! .. why do you even ask?
It is actually sounds pretty good and is rather loud-ish. And it has enough battery for some 20hours with one charge.
That's all for now, I hope next time I have some real hobby stuff to present to you guys! See ya 'round.

Keep on working hard and all that university will one day be behind you. Sadly, this hobby does have to take the back seat on many things, as amazing as it is.
The scenery looks like a great spot for a couple brews, it would appear that it was a jolly gathering!
Best of luck with everything.

I have never seen a Forgeworld model in real life before today's topic, Rhinox Thunderlord. Thank you once more for Gnoblar_Herder, ~ConOgre and just-josh! Without you I still would not have seen a Forgeword model in real life! This piece is stunning looking, he is massive and beautifully detailed. One could think that a Ogre Rhinox Rider could not be that cool, but I have to say, it sure can!
This really hitted me when I was putting this beast together. Fur and skin patterns of the Rhinox are looking so sweet, nothing like the standard Rhinox. I could not catch this feeling with my camera, but I still tried.
Now I'm finally getting my hands on paintpots, and I can't tell you how excited I am about this! I was thinking to try something like bluish grey with this Rhinox. Reasoning for this is as follows: My other rhinoxes are reddishbrown ones. And as this one sure is far more wiser, experienced and older than the little ones, this old rhinox must look more.. classy? You know what I mean. Then again I do like this army relatively "realish", so I'm not going to paint this old fella purple or anything. Still plain grey is too boring.
If some of you have other ideas, please share them.

Wow he looks great! Gratz on the win again. Don't forget to give the fella a wash with soapy water to wash away the reagent that allows the model to come out of the vast. Something I learnt from another ogre on these forums for the life of me I can't remember who at this present time. Either way it will make your painting him much easier so I am told.
Can't wait to see some paint on this fella!
Kind regards Zolas

It was a deserved win so no more blather on that front.
I agree that the FW models are just amazing. I have quite a few and I have yet to find one that has not blown me away with the detail and quality of the resin/ cast.
I am wondering if the reason you have not invested in any FW stuff before is because of shipping, import fees/ taxes etc. If so then let me know and I will happily get them for you and ship them over to you.
On the subject of this particular model; it is indeed truly awesome. I can't urge any ogre player enough to add this model to their collection, that's why I chose it as a competition prize. It is just such a lovely model to own and a joy to get some paint on.
I can't wait to see what you do with this and the Bluey grey sounds like a really good call. (TBH it's been a wile since you got this model so anticipation of it's completion is almost overwhelming!).
Now is the time! lets see some paint on this little beauty!
G_H
Pirkkalalainen20 Jun 2014
Zolas: Thank you for the tip! Sure sounds like a good idea, sadly I already basecoated the model so I guess it is a bit late for that right now. But I'm sure to remember that next time I get my hands on a forgeworld model!
G_H: I don't actually know why I have not invested in FW models. Probably it is because they are a bit on the expensive side, a bit because they are not always "real" models and I have been wondering if I may even use them in some games, maybe a bit because for something else. But now that I have actually seen one model, I can justify the price and even the possibility that I would not be able to play with 'em.
So we will see. Taxes are not a problem because of EU or something, as we don't need to pay taxes if the goods ordered inside EU countries.. Or something.
I'm not actually home right now, but I took the model and some paintpots with me so I have done some base coloring! Nothing flashy yet, some simple layer of grey, blue and brown. I still got a crappy picture with my phone for you fellow ogres.

Well well well. What could be fancier than new goodies! Especially when you have not finished anything in couple of months. But new goodies it still is.
Mr. Postman was so kind to bring us some new toys today. Something for her (no, not the postman.. english so hardz..), something for me and something for us. (we are building a Lizardmen army together)
But this fall it is time for me to unleash more big monsters on the field! Along Lug the Legless and still unnamed Thunderlord. (Hmm... maybe I should write a story for him too, which I could maybe post for Bellower webzine??) There will now be some Stonehorn awesomeness!!
See ya soon mates!

It's good to see you back in the saddle brother! Everyone loves new toys! I can't wait to see what you do with this stuff...but I would also love to see a picture of Lug the legless and the as yet unnamed Rhinox thunderlord; just to see how they turned out.
You keep posting and I will keep reading brother.
G_H
Pirkkalalainen12 Aug 2014
.. just to see how they turned out.
Thunderlord is still making the turning. But that just means you have the possibility to observe all the steps as I make progress with him.
I actually made some testing and painting.. and testing and overpainting with Rhinox's fur and the T-lord's seat. (T-lord.. I like that ) Bluish fur as promised. I don't actually know what the "saddle mattress" is supposed to be so I decided it shall be scales. I did paint it over with clear varnish, but that's not really showing in this picture.
That was from where I started today, before my 2 hour painting session. Hooray! It's been a while since I have done hobbying more than an hour straight.
Sadly it is getting too dark to take any pictures today. As I am totally depending on solar light a.k.a sunshine for my photo shootings. Let's hope I'll get home before sundown tomorrow.

Today and yesterday I have mainly been adding some base colors for T-lord and all random accessories there is hanging around. It's not that fancy, just something to get you to the good stuff. Today I tried adding a small detail tho', a painted skull. It is supposed to be very old painting from many years ago when this fella was no Rhinox lord at all, from the years where he made his living by pirating. This idea actually originated from my girlfriend as she said this ogre looks like a pirate. Thanks to her I now have more ideas for T-lord's background story.. stories.. saga.
About the background story: My head is filling with ideas and I'm quite dedicated to write few short stories about his background. From different times, starting from his early years and giving some glimpses on how he have risen to the position of a Lord. And by lord I don't just mean he is some killing machine.. not just that, he should be smart and wealthy too.

More excuses coming this way. Last weekend was supposed to be hobbying weekend, but.. My friends surprised me with my bachelor party. Which lasted whole weekend and I'm quite exhausted atm. Covered in bruises because of paintball matches, quite tired cause of canoying and on top of that I had too much to eat and to drink.
But I'm rising from Valhalla. Which was our weekends theme drink.. I had quite a lot of fantasy themed task and gear during weekend, it was awesome.
But I shall give some hobby stuff for you folks too. No Rhinox tho'... let's see. Did I ever tell you guys how I made the base for my Hunter?
If anyone is interested, sprue edges are very nice for making homemade bases. If someone would like to create a homemade base that pretty much is nothing special and imitates a normal one, that is..
I never have spare bases when I need them, so I often end up making them myself.
First thing to do is to glue few sprue edge sticks on top of each other until the desired height, as shown below.
After that you may shape the base edges if you want to create slope-like base. I often use cardboard for filling my terrain, as I always have some laying around. Some putty may be used to fill up holes and after that sanding all edges gives it smoother finish.
This whole thing can be glued on top of plasticard, paper, cardboad, etc. Whatever feels sufficient for you.
Thank you very much for your time and see ya 'round.
I just want to say that English ain't my mother tongue, so it is far from perfect and I can just hope that you guys can understand me. And feel free to point out my spelling errors or major grammatical mistakes :]
Gnoblar_Herder25 Aug 2014
That is a really practical and cheap way of making a decent base; I like this allot.
I love the fact that it is angular/ sloping. I have boxes of sprus laying around the house/ shed as I had this idea at one time that I would turn them into a Necron army on the cheap (I actually have every spru from every model I have ever bought and clipped off...what a nutter!) as I had seen someone else do it. I doubt I ever will get around to it so this will be a good use for some of them spru's!
