Some of the new art

original thread ↗

Well I disagree, most art is round around the edges; much too round. And in fact I think greassus looks fine.
The art is really great!
Really dynamic, great colours and fat ogres with grim weapons! :D

Can't be more excited when going through the pages and planning the army. :)
Look at the old art of Greasus, it looked so intimidating with that little reflection in his eye and that evil grin. His new art is abysmal to say the least.

So now it actually matches the model, then.
This is Wiki, the pet gnoblar. Say hello, Wiki.
"I also have complaints with the filtered art from the last army book, because some of those pictures are truly outstanding, yet GW suddenly decided that ogres have pink skin and they do everything they can to ruin our armies of green skins; even take older pictures where ogres have green skin and put an orange filter on their flesh."

I found that strange too- why go back and change the skin tone of the Ogres from earlier art?  I remember reading somewhere that the Ogres (from the Ogre Kingdoms) were modelled so they didn't just look like 10-foot tall fat guys.  The 6th & 7th edition pale, greyish skin tones helped distinguish the Ogres as a separate, non-human race IMO.  I think both skin tones look pretty cool though.
Kevin Chin is a new artist. I am quit sure this is his first large scale project with GW.

What I find appalling is how different the skill levels are between him and the other artist's working for GW. I am not talking about John Blanche, he has a unique in his role.

Artist like Paul Dainton and Alex Boyd have done most of the artwork in the last few years and their style is great. A mix of realism and cartoon. Whether you liked their style or not, what was undeniable was their masterful drawing technique. Other artist before them set the tone like Karl Kopinski who has now left the company.

I know Dainton and Boyd are still in the company as some of their artwork still appears. I believe they should come back to the fore, as Mr.Chin is clearly not capable of producing a large amounts of high quality illustrations. He has done a few single images which where worthy of being called GW art, but that's it.

Remember those illustrations are not some artist's whim on what he feels is art. GW is a company that hires artists who are required to create imagery representing models not the contrary. The illustrations used in the book, most of them, are not concept art. John Blanche does concept art, which is used by sculptors as inspiration. A good example would be the Varghulf and the Zombie Dragon/Terrorgheist. Both of those started out as John Blanche "doodle"

I'm thinking as a whole many of you are too quick to judge.  Overall, the artwork is all very well composed, characterful and have excellent use of color.  The only piece which I didn't enjoy was the art for Greasus, largely because of how much I loved the old artwork for him.  That said, I bet they would have colorized his old art if people didn't complain so much about colorized pen drawings in the previous too books, such a pity.  As someone else mentioned though, the current art matches the model a bit better, for better or worse.

If there is anything about the art that I would complain about this book is that I think there should be MORE John Blanche.  He is by far my favorite GW artist, and among one of my favorite artists outside of GW as well.  If you haven't before, you really should check out his fine art.
TheDiceAbide.com - Same game, better attitude.

I respect your opinion on the art, I just want to emphasize on the lack of preparation on the drawings. The coloring is a style choice but the preparation should take into account anatomy and proportions as well as perspective. Some of these images don't have those, this is not abstract art it's GW creature art, it's meant to be illustrative.

I think most of the art is bad, but thats just an opinion. Take a look at the mournfang riders great weapon. The blood apears to be moving in the wrong direction.
I actually did check out Blanches' other work. His watercolours are just outstanding (kind of like Hitler's landscapes).
