new codex thread

original thread ↗

Ogre kingdoms thread.

There are a lot of changes but the first thing i noticed and would like to try out is the "been there done that" rule from the maneaters which allows me to give them snipe and poisoned attacks.

I was thinking of giving them brace of pistols (which are essentially 2 handguns)
With this I could make a hardhitting close combat unit which can also snipe your mages down before they do anything.
Though since they all have 5 attacks with the additional hand weapon. I will probably field them in units of 3-4 single file.

btw maneaters can now take full command and a magic banner up to (don't post exact book costs) points.  :D

Also a maneater with brace of pistols and heavy armour is (whaa whaa) points  :o
and have i mentioned they have the old statline
ooh and they are now a specials choice   8)

at that point cost and a unit size of 3+ i would like to see some maneater hordes (just for the fun of it)

SABRETUSKS PACKS.

a great flanking unit

hit harder then an ogre, But they are somewhat fragile.

with bases smaller then an ogre in width and a high inititive they can really pack a punch when you charge an enemy in the flank.

MAGIC WEAPONS.

most are disappointing
-thundermace stays about the same slightly better and slightly worse but has increased to (don't post direct costs) points. not worth it

-siegebreaker
got worse, increased in points to ( :| ). will never take it

-gnoblar thiefstone through that 6 and you can't top your luck, and the look on your opponents face will be totally worth any time you rolled a 1-4 on other times when he sees you stole the item from his now not so invincible chaos lord (though at these points I will probably never take it)

-greedy fist +1 strength and 6+ward for (some points) is not worth it and the special rule does not make up for it.

-gut maw terror and regain wounds when wounding in a challenge, (stop posting direct costs) points not worth it.

-gruts sickle inflict a wound on your own unit at the start of the magic phase and you will get 2+ to cast on all spells this magic phase, at the end of a phase roll 2D6 on a double 1 remove the caster. for (whoop whoop) points this will make for a great dispel dice attractor. or you could try your hand on the great maw spell. It is a little bit expensive but it could come in handy.

-hellhearth for (yawn) points you can force miscasts on all wizards within 5xD6, for (zzzzz) points I would call it a little expensive for a one use only item. Though it's great if you go for a low wizard army.

-rock eye for ( :yhetee:) points you get to know where all your opponents tricks are I would almost call this one a must now.

-rune maw it is now (whaaa) points but it has improved a bit, the caster must now choose a new target for the spell, but the spell is wasted in he cannot do this (though it counts has having been cast)

-dragonhide banner It is now (less than it was) points and works the same as it used to except that the unit is not immune for ice magic, but can cast a strength 3 breath weapon which will give the enemy unit ASL until the end of the turn. I would say this banner is one of our better items because you can make your ogres hit first.

(Please refrain from posting point costs from the book, and please use better punctuation, spelling, and grammar in your posts. Thank you. -Randroid)

THUNDERTUSK.

I think i will always chose the thundertusk above the stonehorn.
Even if you go for raw power the thundertusk seems better becausei ts a walking catapult. But thats not the reason i like him so much. i like him so much because he gives all enemy's within 6" the ASL special rule. Just imagine him between 2 blocks of bull hordes.

Not only that but the thundertusk is almost as durable as a stonehorn.

When posting impressions please try not to post the full rules and points costs of units from the book, cheers!
will do

I had been excited for the new characters, but now I see their costs are just too high for my tastes.  In particular, Bragg is essentially a bruiser with a halberd that only gains truly nifty qualities in a challenge, but he costs twice as much as a regular bruiser.

Did everyone notice that the gnoblar trapper rule states that the unit must be charged in the front arc for the dangerous terrain roll to be made?

So they won't be much flank protection to ogres against calvary and other fast movers that would usually hit them in the flank.

I can see them lined up to defend the ogre gun line though.
Truth be told though, I think it helps my lists.

I like using ogres and all the units, except the Gorger, went down in points.  That means I get to use more of them.

Cormorant on thundertusk ASL rule

Now all we need is the 7th edition rule that said if the models are killed they don't get to fight and we WOULD be a broken army! lol

And the average gun can only shoot half way across the table,

or with tanks that move as fast as guys,

or...

we could go on and on.  Maybe a renaming of the thread to "The New Army Book"?
-greedy fist +1 strength and 6+ward for 40 points is not worth it and the special rule does not make up for it.

you pay 10 old gnoblar points for a sword of might and 7.5 old gnoblar points for a talisman of protection, which give you +1 strength and a 6+ ward. For 5 points more you can strip away magic levels. I don't think its so bad, though obviously better against daemon or vampires than other armies.

Chuck Norris was the fourth wise man and gave Jesus his favorite gift, a beard. The other wise men were so hacked off, they got Chuck Norris removed from the bible. Mysteriously, they all later died of Roundhouse kick related injuries.
General impressions:

Things that needed to be Cheaper got cheaper. Things that had the right cost got more expensive.

Special characters are a bit overpriced (thats nothing new in WFB)

Will miss some special Ogre only sorts of things like Clubs, Cathayan LS, etc. I feel like GW is trying to balance the game, and I think the most accurate term to describe the book is "streamlined."

Very glad army composition restrictions are being taken out for the most part.

Magic item selection is wank for the most part (Dragonhide banner the exception), as are most of the bignames (Giantbreaker > Mawseeker now)

Designing my first army list last night I was pleased that It was a headache to decide on a build! Never had this problem with the old book!

I'm pleased.
i understand this thread; i'm also fluent in 40,000 languages.

love my new army book... i even licked the cover when i got it!
i love the combination of golgfag's 2d6x10 magic item before deploying and gnoblar thiefstone robbery during deployment.

has anyone thought of the combination of grut's sickle on a level 2 firebelly?  4+d3 to cast second spell on same unit?

can be used in 3+ units
Got a lot cheaper.

So....dont let them hit the gnobbies in the flank?

Its all in the angle!

Take a closer look at the Numbing Chill rule on the Thundertusks, as it does not say all enemy units within 6" but "any enemy model within 6 inches".  So it isn't quite as powerful as if it were "units" and not "models".  I will still be taking one though, as my Cooksnatcher tribe could definitely use a "walking larder".
this will probably be in the FAQ but has anyone else notices that greedy fist says hit, not wound? if this is the case, greedy fist and hell heart are going to make every vampire player quit.

Old greedy fist worked on hits as well. I think I liked the old greedy fist better, actually.
I love love love!!!! the new book. I cant wait to play my first game with my Stonehorne and my 160 wounds worth of ogres i just cant wait i think it all rocks
