Visions of the Bloodmaw

original thread ↗

30 August 2011

I was inspired last night, reading the posts here. I read about a butcher/SM with a magic carpet and Lore of Death that sounded nasty. Well, the gears in my head started turning, and I've decided to make an Ogre Genie.

My initial effort was to amputate the legs off of a normal ogre bull body. I took one of the bear trap weapon arms and removed the trap part for one hand, and cut off a club for his off hand. I wanted him holding his lamp in his hand, while a cloud of magic emerges from his other.

As you can see, the lamp didn't turn out to well. I've taken it off, and I'm re-doing it. I have a reference picture that I'm using.

MUCH better.  :D I had to pin the lamp onto his fist, but it now looks like it should, and is staying where I want it.

Now, I need to go out and get some floral wire (or something similar) to 'block out' how I want his legs/magic effect, before filling it in with Green Stuff.

Much better.
When using gs, take a wet sculpting tool and run it over the finished area. This will rub out those nasty fingerprints.

Added a basic 'leg' structure to my genie, and laid down a skeleton for his magical effect.

I wasn't very clever here. I did the 'legs' without adding a paper clip skeleton, so I had to 'baby' it until it dried to the point where I could safely ignore it.

All in all, he's coming along nicely.

Then again, he may be delayed, as I build my mournfangs, my firebelly, my leadblaster... :P

Did a little more work on the genie, since technically I couldn't work on my 'new' stuff yet. Added a topknot and filled in both the legs and the magic stream.

I'm going to paint him first before finishing the stream of magic. I plan on using cotton soaked in glue to give it an ethereal, smokey look. Also, I need to get a flying base for him...

personally i think where you greenstuffed the magical tail thingy it should get slowly smaller becuse for me it gets too thin too quick round the top area its fine on the end just the top looks like it too thin
when i have a big irongut horde i will start singing "we got deathstar (deathstar) we got deathstar (deathstar)"
Good catch, chief.

5 Sept 2011
I've fixed the leg issue that chief bellower noticed, and finished painting him.

Now, all I have to do is the cotton on the magic effect, and stick him on a flying base. The bases are on the way, I'll probably have them by the end of the week.

The Bloodmaw are Victorious!

OK, first off, I'm stopping the practice of dating my posts. (The date is up above anyways.) :P

Second, I got my first massacre since playing the new ogres.

I'm in a Mighty Empires campaign, and we're at 2,000 points, with a maximum unit size limit of 375. (So, no hordes, no huge unbreakable units, and so forth.) I was up against Lizard Men, and he forgot to take a caster. I'll put the battle report in the proper place later. For now, thoughts on how the fatties performed:

Mournfangs were AWESOME! Unit of 4+Full Command+Dragonhide Banner+Ironfists. They got charged by TWO 20-man blocks of Saurus Warriors, AND WON COMBAT! They managed to whittle down both blocks to only two ranks in each block. Then again, they only managed to win combat by one, but that was all it took for a 3x2 block of bulls + Firebelly to come in and help out.

Solo sabertusks saved my backside. Literally. I took two, and placed one on each end of my battle line, about 12" in from the table edge. My opponent was frustrated when he tried to place his chameleon skinks behind me.

My Tyrant, however, was the star of the show. Him and his 4x2 block of Irongut bodyguards charged his Cold One unit (with Lord). (Two guts were singed by his Salamander team, before they themselves were taken down.) The Tyrant challenged, his unit champion accepted. At first, he was kicking himself because he geared his Lord to be a Challenge Killer (Pariah Blade, Dragon-something Totem... so 1 unsaved wound turns into 4). Then again, his Lord wiped out my remaining Ironguts... and my Tyrant held. Next turn, I did one wound to him, and his attacks back were ineffective (Sword of Swift Slaying is a wonderful weapon. :P) I killed him before I managed to eat his weapon's magic, but my Tyrant displayed why he was the leader of the Bloodmaw.

All in all, an effective list. I may have to try some more tailored lists in this campaign. We've got myself, two Lizard Man players, and a Vampire Counts player.

OK, almost done! I've got his smoke finished, and he's been varnished. Now, just waiting on the flying bases to arrive.

BTW, I have a new personal avatar icon. It's the standard bearer of my Mournfang unit.Icon on the flag (Dragonhide Banner, of course) is that of my tribe, the Bloodmaw.

I Dream of Genie

Flying bases came in the other day. Finally finished basing my genie.

I think it looks pretty good. He turned out rather well. I'm thinking he'll be my Heavens butcher/SM, rather than my Death. On to my next project(s): modeling a Death and Beasts butcher. My Death butcher is going to be modeled as a voodoo houngan/bokor, in the New Orleans tradition; dark skin, white skull face-paint, etc. The Beasts butcher will be a bit more extensive. I've ordered some werewolf bits from [GW Competition Website] and going to try and fit them together.

In other news, I lost last night to Vampires. However, it was extremely close. I ran a SM with Fencer's Blades, Greedy Fist, and Armor of Fortune (I now realize that's 110 points in magic. Oops...), a bruiser BSB with Armor of Destiny, and a butcher with Beasts and Talisman of Protection in a unit of 6 IG bearing the Flaming Banner, along with a unit of 6 Bulls, 3 Leadbelchers, a unit of Mournfangs, and an Ironblaster. The Mournfangs tied up his wraith unit (with a banshee) for the entire game; they were evenly matched, but they couldn't hurt the wraiths. On the other hand, it took them the entire game to grind them down.

The Bulls got double charged by ghouls. The did a bunch of damage to them before they broke, so they did well. The Ironblaster did some damage to his unit of knights, but that damn regen... they did blast a bunch of ghouls tho, with grapeshot. Very satisfying.

The Deathstar unit did do well, as it managed to get the charge onto his knights. The look on his face when he said, "OK, this into normal guys...""Nope. Can't reach them." Then again, when I told him my ENTIRE unit had flaming attacks. And again, when I ate his wizard levels with the Greedy Fist. All told, he managed to do 3 or 4 wounds on my characters, before I literally beat down his general. He was impressed; his general has never been beaten down in CC before, only run down from combat resolution. What lost me the game, however, was a rear charge from a block of ghouls with a vampire in it. I lost combat by 3, and I didn't make a Ld 5 in two rolls. He ran me down as they fled. He was very confident before the game, but afterwards, he's all, "I don't want to fight Ogres again!" So, a moral victory, if nothing else.

Next list will be SM with Enchanted Shield, Fencer's Blades, Greedy Fist, and LotGM; Bruiser BSB with Armor of Destiny; Firebelly (lvl 2) with xHW and Talisman of Preservation in the Ironguts. Drop the IB and bump the Leadbelchers to a 3x2 block, and add 3 solo 'tusks. Have the Bulls protect one flank of the Deathstar, and the mournfangs/'tusks protect the other, along with the 'tusks' other job of running down solos/harassing flanks/etc.

Now, with 100% more Gnoblars!

I've come across the section where gnoblars can now take a full command. Yes, shocking, I know. Thing is, I've already got a bunch of the little gits; I don't want to buy any more. So (because I like my options open), I decided to convert one of my existing ones to a standard bearer.

Simple, but effective.

Now, to paint him. Them. Whatever. :P

Death Butcher: Voodoo Bokor

OK, WIP for my Death butcher. Going for a New Orleans style Bokor (voodoo sorcerer).

Not sure if I got the gut right. I want to put a skull as his belt buckle.

Any other suggestions will be welcomed.

Are You Reeaaaady?

OK, quote from Disney's Princess and the Frog. Still, I did a bit more work on my voodoo bokor.

As you can see, I decided to give him a cane instead of a club. Seemed more voodoo-like.

I've also given him a pair of heads hanging off his belt.

The white stuff is white BluTac, and only there for positioning.

Now, the question...

Should I keep his necklace of heads? Or take it out? Also, I did a preliminary head on top of the cane; should I keep that one, or replace it with an actual skull?

Please vote, so I can finish this guy. :)

Head on cane is fine, bore out a bit of the hat so it sits a little more on his head though.  Looking good!

Final Decision on my Bokor

Well, here it is. The final setup for my Death butcher.

I decided against the necklace, and one of my gaming opponents gave me a bunch of skeletal bits. So, his cane now has a proper skull, and I cut one in half for his belt. The top hat... is never going to sit 'properly' on his head. No worries, however, because I think it looks good this way.

Also, finished green stuffing my beasts butcher.

The Power of Voodoo!

Voodoo Butcher is done! (Well, except for the base, but still...)

OK, looking at it this closely, the pants are messy, and the heads need work. But, for the most part, he's done. :P

And, I've painted up a Bragg. (Might not ever get a game in with him, but...)

Still needs some work, but he's looking good. His polearm broke off, so I put it back on with some jeweler's chain.

I like the conversions so far!

The genie is amazing! The smoke effect works pretty well; I wasn't sure about it at first, but the more I look at it, the more it works.  Although, doesn't the smoke come out of the lamp as well? No matter. Great model!

For basing the Bokor, I really think you need a pot of Ogreized gumbo ;) I mean, granted it's supposed to focus more on de voodoo rather than N'Orleans, but hey, big swirling pots of meat are right up Butcher alley!

I'm still not quite sure where you're going with the Beast butcher, but it looks great eitherway. Sort've like a lycan ogre...? I can't wait to see the final product.

Transporting the Lads...

Nothing new on my conversions at the moment. Haven't had the impulse to really work on them like I should. However, I did fix the case I keep them in.

The handle broke off, so I replaced it with a bit of braided rope. Not a real good shot of it, but hey... iPhone camera. :P Took some fiddling to get it properly, but it works.

Oh, and BTW... the blurry thing in the background is a Grey Knight Warhound titan that I scratch built from plasticard. I still have to get back to that and paint it proper.

The titan in the background looks to me like what a Warhound Titan would be if it were a polygon warrior in the Super Smash Bros. series :P In all honesty, though, that looks really cool! I'd hate to have to fight against something like that  lol

Power of the Beast!

OK, beast butcher is done... I think. I may decide to splatter him with blood and gore later on.

Also finishing up my voodoo butcher. Gave him some dust that he's 'blowing' to his opponents. Still have to fix the heads on his belt, tho...

Anyways, next project(s): Scratch built scraplauncher and a musician for my maneaters.

The pipes! The pipes are calling!

Just started on my maneater musician. Of course, I couldn't go for anything easy or mundane...

Yes, that's an ogre wearing a kilt. And no, I did not model what he isn't wearing underneath it. I'm not THAT sick and wrong. :P

In other news, I've thrown together a scratch built Scraplauncher.

Sorry for the crummy lighting. Taking these with my iPhone, and no professional lightbox setup. (Then again, seeing the keyboard in the bachground, you probably figured that.)  :|

And finally, an unrelated model.

Story: I went to the local Freeway V Birthday thing, and won the model by virtue of buying a new case for my ogres (They're at that size...) So, I built him and painted him for the painting competition. From base coat to varnish: 5 hours. I like how he turned out. Probably work well with my Nezumi army I'm building. Sniping Giant

OK, I haven't been keeping up with this lately. Let me try and fix that now by showing you all what I've been working on lately.

Yes, that's a giant. Yes, he's carrying a Sky Titan Cannon like a rifle. Yes, that's a gnoblar sitting on top. Yes, this is a 'counts as' Ironblaster. Yes, it's damn cool. :D

I'm still working on the gnoblar's arms, as can be seen here...

The main reason I'm posting this now is because my local GW is hosting a 'Silver Daemon Competition,' painting a largel model/unit in April. Which means I have to get cracking on painting this bad boy, since the month is half gone already.

I'll keep you posted...
