New Bull and new to WHFB

Hey everyone,

I’m new to WHFB and starting with Ogres.  My local area just does not have a large WHFB base and we have a few of us starting to learn how to play over the next weeks.  I really wanted to play Ogres and have been reading the new core rulebook and picked up 3 battalion boxes of ogres form wayland games a few months back.  I just built most of the models on Sunday but still working on the gnoblars.  I left off the left hand on the bulls until I understand the army better.  I have read the current codex from front to back a few times and love the lore and the models.  I want to know where to go from here?  Should I wait until the next army book comes out next weekend and start reading through that? 

This Thursday we are getting a group together to play WHFB step by step learning the game demo. 

I just wanted to say hi and I’m new to the game and where does a fledgling hungry bull go from here? 

Hello Baleface. The next step is obviously to go and paint them. 

Next step is characters, I strongly suggest the tyrant and SM box as you can use 2 bull bodies to build another 2 heros off of the extras in there.  That will give you 4 Characters and a decent sized force.

Next play a few test games and see what you need.  With a good strong center like that I suspect you'll want to invest in an ironblaster (for killing monsters), Sabertusk pack (redirecting/field control + mage/knight hunting) and Mournfang (the rules on these guys are just so good) and maybe a giant for a flank/counter flank.

I notice you havn't given the Bulls any weapons in the left hands yet.

I can with absolute confidance say that Ironfists are the way to go. with that you will have 5+ armor, with a 6+ ward in CC, for your bulls. 5+ armor is decent against low str shooting like bows and is very effective against Str3 CC attacks. its also dirt cheap.


your next purchases should be a Tyrant, a Bruiser BSB(although you could convert a regular ogre into one) and a couple of Butchers/SMs.

after that, you can move into the other things like Mournfangs, Ironblasters, Scraplaunchers, Thundertusks, and Stonehorns. proxy a couple of them before you buy and see what works for you.

if you run into enemy Warmachines and monsters, Ironblasters will be good for you as they can take out these enemy models with fair ease.

If you see loads of infantry, Mournfangs, Stonehorns, and especially Thundertusks will be useful as they can chew RnF up very quickly and/or support your ogre bulls in doing the same.

I agree about the characters. You also might want to aquire some maneaters, everyone thinks they will be useful in the new book. They are (in my opinion) beautiful, but very expensive models, so you have to decide if you want to buy or convert them.

I finished the rest of the 72 gnoblars last night and I still have two unfinished Ogres models off to the left as you can see part of the base on the left hand side of the picture.  I wanted to leave those open to help build whatever I needed. 

Ironfists really!  That is great, as I love the look of them but was not sure as being green to WHFB and that silly WD had all the bulls with an extra hand weapon.  But I do know to take the WD with a grain of salt. 

I will be picking up the new army book, deck of magic cards, SM and Tryant.   If my paycheck allows I may pick up a few other items depending on what my local store has in stock this weekend. 

Painted up my first Ogre it took me a little bit of time but I'm starting to move forward.  Also I got three games under my belt and start an escalation league tonight.

I love your metal effect.  How did you get it?

I started with Tin Bits and moved to a very watered down Boltgun metal.  I then added a Devlin Mud wash and re-layered a shining gold watered down mix on it and watered down Thunderhawk turquoise to get the stain marks.  Mainly layering and watered down paints starting dark and going to light and normally ending with a dry brushing of Boltgun or mithril silver depending on how dark the item is.

It seems that this thread is turning into what we call a gnoblog . I'm going to move it over to that section now.

Question on the ironblaster: did you paint before assembly as suggested for most of the kit, or simply build it first and paint it?

If you don't already own this kit it's very hard to tell just how much detail is on it.  This kit is hands down one of the best kits I have seen from GW.  I painted it in 11 different parts and should have been more like 14 parts if I was smart about it.  I found that the amount of hidden detail was great, for example the chaos star behind one of the wheels. 

I know that the cannon should be painted as if it is very old but I just could not stop myself from painting it.  I had the joy of discovering what was on the cannon and relating it to the lore in the old and new army book.  The sculptor was even able to add tiny Ogres on the cannon for the mural.

On a totally different note I won my first game of the escalation league I joined.  We played a 750 point game vs. some nasty furry Skaven.  It was a great blood battle with the game being very close for several rounds.  I learned a lot as a novice player and walked away with a short list of rules I needed to look up.

Tomorrow starts my painting of my Bulls and I'm hoping to get six of them done before next Monday.
