I dunno; the whole look of the book and the artwork just feels... off to me. At first I thought it was just one or two pictures but it seems like the entire book gets this very retro-80's fantasy look. I guess that could be okay but I really liked the artwork in the first book (the official stuff anyways, not those sketches they slapped into the unit entries). They just... look like fat, pink Orcs to me. There, I said it.

Oh my Maw, yes that is the picture of my army that I want! ^^
Skin: I find the skin to be ok. I doubt the pink badlands ogres ate all Grey mountain of Mourn ogres >.<
Teeth: we're not related to humans, we're humanoids that look like humans. We diet on only meat (and the occasional gravel for fiber) it makes sense to give us teeth that reflect that fact.
The head: I find the head to be ok, the smaller the walnut the harder to crack(if the walnut has a neck it just complicates things)

That's exactly what I've been thinking. In the grand scheme of things Ogres have been grey for less than 7 years - prior to that for the first 20 years they were 'flesh' coloured. Some people preferred grey, some flesh. At the end of the day it doesn't matter, 'cos you can paint them any colour you want - welcome to 'The Hobby'TM.

I kind of ignored this before but what does campy have to do with "Nanki-Poo"..?
[Campy adj. refers to intentionally exaggerated thematic or genre elements, especially in television and motion picture mediums. Camp style willfully over-emphasizes certain elements of the genre or theme, creating an almost self-satirical milieu.]
EDIT* looks like there are two different definitions for that term.. Never associated that term with being perverse or suggestive.. ~Broke open my ancient Webster's to make sure I wasnt crazy and it defines campy as a parody or spoof~

Well, I agreed that G&S could be a bit campy generally (not Nanki-Poo specifically, Poo-Bah probably would have been a better choice), but I didn't really see how that campyness was a quality shared by that Ogre on the cover, I was trying to disassociate the two.

If you were a Roman-styled civilization as in one that conquers all set before them, your scenery would change too. If you ever watched the HBO TV show that shows Rome and all its' greatness, they had similar discussions. lol When they would take long campaigns into foreign lands, many of them wanted to go back to their vision of Rome. However, since many of them came from different parts or joined in different times or for different reasons their vision of Rome was very different.
I personally liked the visual look of grey ogres, but I got knocked too hard on painting scores with my Beastmen to paint a dark army like that with no color, and I do not see ogres in bright cloths. hehe

An impact hit! A palpable impact hit!
I don't suffer from mental instability. In fact, I enjoy it immensely.
Gutlord Inquisitor: FORUM FIGHT! Me, I'm betting on the stronghold. Sure, they're outnumbered with thick skulls, stubborn bull-headedness and an inflated sense of self-worth, but hey, they're Ogres.

*smashes difisher a good one just "because"*
I am thinking of making that volcano theme, my friends are really pushing me to do it and I think I will like it. The bases will be a lot different, that for sure. I also think I will have the skin tones a dark gray with slightly lighter highlights... that way the red and oranges from the pants will really stick out.
I have seen several armies that go this way, as I am sure we all have, but I will say that one thing that a 40mm base offers that most other armies do not get to enjoy is space to have OSL, and to tell a story with the bases. For example, and this is giving me ideas btw...You could have a rock or piece or wood on your base, that is cut in half and placed on two separate bases so they meet perfectly when you place the model on the board. You could paint the end which I would recommend and even partly conceal by not making it a straight line on the cut that it is a part of another base as well when placed next to it. You could do that well with valleys of lava and or rock mounds on the command bases since you know they are always going to be on the front, and are the most seen from the front.
I agree the newer models on their even larger bases could really look sharp on them with a nice theme. This would also give you a chance to use water effects and osl effects on the bases without being cramped.
I would caution some on going gray with a black and greay base as the primary colors. I would make them an off gray by blending in a purple or a brown. I can post pictures of a Fire Giant I painted a long time ago using some Gray/Purple/Black blend and you can see what I mean if you want.
As far as why the color of Ogres matter I come up with this line of thought from GW perspective. They had several light skin armies 7 or so years ago, and Ogres are mostly flesh colored, so they wanted some other colored armies on the battle field... or so they would hope you believe. However, IMO the reason why they changed the color, and then kind of changed it back again has to do with sells. They have the same plastic models basically they have had for a while, so there is no need to go buy some more models, and lets be honest it is one of the cheapest armies to get into. You can have a very effective army and probably play the same army as you already have. The new models are cool looking, but they do not look so over powered that other than looking awesome we want to buy them all.
I have personally bought a lot, but that is because I like the models, and would do it regardless of a color change. Everyone who has dark gray ogres now will be seen as normal, but in 3 or 4 years if people start painting their models with the pink hue than those models will be seen as old school, and will be laughed at much like my entire army of 2nd ed nids. Everyone loves a screamer, but they would not field a whole army from that time.... everyone but me maybe. heh
I just point out that my Genestealers give my Hive Tyrant cover in the new rules and people tend to laugh a little.

Agreed, for the most part. I don't hate the new stuff on its own, but compared to the old cover art it's bollocks.
