First game of fantasy! 1k points

original thread ↗

*Sorry this is a personal move into here, just because i didn't read which forum i put it in last time! And if you wish to see the deployment [and view my lovely skills in microsoft paint   just PM me, as i can't seem to post links to the images   )

Well my first ever game of fantasy took place last night (so my memory might be a bit off), against one of the GW guys at the store and his VC blood dragons. Had a bit of advice from some other players, which i think altered my tactics a bit, but it was a learning experience for me regardless.

My list -

Bruiser with Siegebreaker
Butcher with Bangstick
Gnoblar unit - 20 models strong
Gnoblar unit - 20 models strong
Bull unit - 3 models strong
Bull unit - 3 models strong
Leadbelcher unit - 3 models strong
Irongut unit - 3 models strong
Gorger (was going to take a maneater, but a guy convinced me to take the gorger to hunt for his necromancer, and the same guy later convinced me to bring him on to help kill the knights :S)

Came in just under 1k points. No units have anything, they're all naked. As you can see i was attempting to try MSU, just to get a feel of how it works for me, but i wont give too much away of how it turned out.

His list -
Necromancer - lvl 2 with the book of something or other, which allows troops to get an extra move.
2 x vamp thralls that went with the knights, don't know what they had.
2 x 20 man skellie units.
1 x banshee.
1 x 20 strong wolf unit.
1 x knight unit, think it came to 15 with both the thralls in there.

Deployment
(as i can't link images it looked something like)

(Belchers)(Gnoblars)(Gnoblars)(Blue bulls)(Guts)(Orange bulls)_______________________________________________Hill

(Butcher's with the blue bulls, bruiser with the guts, and Orange bulls are on the hill)

Because I knew I had more units than him, I was going to end up throwing all my units on in the end, so I deployed first. From what I was told about VC, the goal was to take out the necromancer, so I was hoping the gorger could help in that role. And I got told of the horror of the banshee, so I was hoping that the bangstick from the butcher, or the siegebreaker from the bruiser would do something. Belchers would hopefully do something to the knights, and the bulls on the hill would try to loop around and slap his flanks. He rolled up curse of years and the raise skellies spells.

Turn 1

He goes first. Knights march forward and loop around the middle left forest to try and flank me, wolves loop around behind his skellies who move forward, his banshee moves into the woods, and his necromancer moves behind the same woods trying to get out of LOS. His magic phase sees curse of years cast with double sixes, and takes out 4 gnoblars from the green squad. And I dispel his book of movement thingy, and his extra raising skellies.

My turn I move my orange bulls off the hill and start to loop around the forest, the bruiser with the ironguts moves forward towards the forest in order to take out that banshee which the people around me had put the fear of god about. The gnoblars who had been shot move up towards the skellies, the butcher and his bulls stay behind them, but move facing where the knights will come through. Belchers plus the yellow gnoblars move up towards the knights direction. Magic phase see’s the bangstick killing 2 skellies from his yellow unit, and sweet crap all happening. (Note: he only dispelled like 2 spells the entire match, by rolls for magic were craptastic.). Shooting sees 2 knights die from the belchers (rolled 2 2’s and an 8 for hits, and out of that 14 shots, 4 hit only got 2 wounds). No combat, so end of my turn.

Turn 2

He moves his skellies forward more, and the wolves turn back around to get ready for the bulls looping around the forest. Knights charge the belchers who decide to run so the charge falls short. Magic phase, he miscasts with his necro, rolling a 6, and a 5, but the 5 was crooked so he rolled it again, a 1. So the magic phase ends. His banshee shoots the unit of ironguts, killing one. No combat, so my turn.

Belchers rally, and because they only just rallied that can’t move from just behind the gnoblars (remember this, it causes crap later on).Gorger doesn’t turn up. Butcher and his bulls move behind the middle left forest ready to flank charge the knights once they hit the gnoblars. Ironguts move up towards the skellies, the bruiser detaches and moves into the forest ready to kill a banshee. Orange bulls move a piddly 6 inches around the forest ready for the wolves to charge next turn. Both gnoblar units move forward and reform into 2 ranks (guy at the store said it would be wise, so I could get more shots off in a stand and shoot). Magic see’s toothcracker land on the ironguts, and the bangstick killing no skellies (rolled a 1, then a 1 to wound L ). Shooting sees the yellow gnoblars throw their crap at the knights, but doing nadda. The green gnoblars shooting at the depleted skelly unit (yeah depleted of like 3 models), and causing 1 kill. No combat so his turn.

Turn 3

This turn is where things turned sour for the ogres. Knights charge the yellow gnoblars and wolves move to charge the orange ogre bulls next turn (bumpkin moved em so I wouldn’t be able to charge my turn). Skellies move like 3 inches forward. Magic phase see’s curse fail to cast, and his book being dispelled, and exhausted on his roll of one (completely useless now). Shooting, his banshee shoots into the back of the ironguts, but it doesn’t do anything. Combat……..well this was interesting, knights charge into the gnoblars, who can’t stand and shoot because they’re closer than half the knights charge range (which got pointed out to me this turn rather than last turn when it would have helped), so the knights charge in and slay 10 gnoblars, meaning the others can’t fight back and are outnumbered by a fear causing enemy, so auto break for those buggers, letting him overrun into my belchers, who as you know had rallied the previous turn, and so were stuck scratching themselves. That’s it for him, so my turn.

Declare my butcher and his bulls are going to charge into the flank of the knights, and the tyrant’s going to charge the bansee, with the ironguts charging into the blue unit of skellies. Gorger turns up and moves down towards the rear of the knights, hoping that I can rear charge them when they get into combat. No other movement besides the orange buggers slowly making their way around for god only knows what reason. Magic, nothing gets cast because I have horrid rolling, and the only spell I get off he dispels. No shooting, so combat. And the shit hits the fan. Now I’m trusting this guy to do the right thing by me with this combat. He says the order of attacks will go – knights, their horses, the belchers, then the other unit that charged in. And because he’s a blood dragon, he has to challenge the champion, which happens to be the butcher. In that challenge, he fails to do diddly, and the butcher inflicts a wound! Go the mighty butcher! The knights + steeds inflict 4 wounds on the belchers, and they do a wound in return. The chargers do their impact hits, achieving nothing. And they kill a total of 3 knights. So the combat apparently comes to – 4 wounds for him and a standard. 4 wounds for me and a flank charge, so combat’s a draw, he has a muso so he wins by one. The belchers test and their fine, the other guys however flee from the loss, thereby causing the belchers to have to take a panic test, and then fleeing from that! The knights chase after the bulls + butcher and cut them down. The tyrant mops the floor with the banshee, and the ironguts kill 5 skellies, but lose because of combat res, but stick around to keep fighting.

Turn 4

Well after the abysmal last turn, the vamp counts have got this in the bag so it’s almost not worth continuing. But we decide to finish it off at least to see what the remaining units can do. Wolves charge the orange bulls and the other skellies flank charge the ironguts. Magic see’s him casting the raise skellies on the blue unit with that 11+ 3d6 thingy or what ever it was, and because I now only have 2 dispel dice I can’t do anything. He gets 10 skellies back. No shooting, so combat. His skellies cut down the ironguts due to combat res. And the wolves tear up an ogre, while the ogres knock down 3 doggies, he wins due to combat res, they flee, and get eaten alive.

The fleeing belchers rally. The tyrant charges into the blue skellies, while the gorger charges into the yellow. Gorger kills 3 but loses due to combat res, doesn’t care however. Tyrant loses due to combat res, but hangs around.

Turn 5

The only highlights of this turn were that the belchers killed themselves trying to shoot at the knights, the tyrant lost due to combat res and got cut down by skellies.

Thoughts of the game
Gorgers in this point limit are useless, I should have stuck with my original thoughts and just taken a maneater, or some more bulls. The butcher was useless, so I’m probably gonna drop him for more bulls until larger games. Bumping up the unit sizes of the bulls is definitely something I should do, 5 with a bruiser in it should be enough – 3x3. Gnoblars are useful as a tarpit, but only when you use them as a tarpit, rather than two lines. That was a stupid idea, as the amount of shots I had just bounched of the knights armour. The banshee wasn’t as scary as everyone was telling me, just annoying if left alone, she killed a single irongut the whole game. The necromancer should have been my target the whole time, I got so absorbed in trying to take down the knights that I completely forgot about the head of the army. Fantasy is not the same as 40k, it requires a lot more thinking in the way of strategies, and other than that, I think I learnt a bit, and didn’t do too badly, it’d be nice to try against a non-immune to fear army which doesn’t have a banshee and three characters in 1k points, but what can you do.
Thanks for reading! :D
He showed up and apologized for selling the power-saw that killed my first husband, and when I looked in his eyes I just knew...
...Yes.......Fantasy isn't the same as 40k......also.....you said Tyrant a few times so you might want to fix that.........

He would have to be a moron to tell you to take a gorger to kill his Necro...and then actually put his Necro out for you to kill him.........Also...a single Maneater probaly wouldn't of helped you........

...........He told you to from into two ranks.....that was a bad idea......I can see it now.....

"Make your formation wider for more stand and shoots*

"But my gnoblars have BS3 and they have S2 hits"

"uuhhhhh.....errrr.....do it anyway..."

"But I'l need the vital combat res from my ranks"

"Shut up and let me beat you with bad advice"

".....okay....I guess..."

In that knights combat order.....since you charged the most recently you should attack first....then he does.....then the belchers(I'm pretty sure.)

You did good for your first warhammer game..........
Yeah, the most recent chargers fight first and he couldn't have pursued your butchers unit as they fled before the Leadbelchers. But Im not too sure on that one....
Save the Trees, eat Beavers.

I don't think so either.
