Introduction In this gnoblog I plan to document my progress as I expand my army for the new army book. I "finished" my army about six months ago, meaning there was not a single unpainted Ogre left in the house!
The theme for the army is Ironskins. When I first started, I wanted something to set them apart and at the time, most people were running small units of unarmoured Bulls (this was in 7th edition) so I went with an Ironskin theme by adding some extra armour to everything and using Irongut arms and heads for my Bulls.
The other thing that stands out is the red skin colour. The reason for this is a special bodypaint made from blood and iron dust. Ok, the real reason is I felt like painting them red.
Reinforcements My existing force is about 3500 points in the old book. I expect it to be less in the new one, especially with my Ironfist+LA Bulls dropping from 43 to 32 points. Still, with the expensive new Monsters I don't think it will be too hard to bring it up to 5000 points.
Also, I was lucky enough to find a dealer who still sells (or claims to sell) Battalions, so I ordered a pair of those. I will need more Leadbelchers, Bulls and Ironguts as well or my army will start to look like monsters with ogres in support. It should be the other way around. I hope they really do have them in stock.
Pictures Enough talk, let's see some models. I'll be posting them a few at a time to keep the posts reasonably short.
This is my Tyrant, Suttung Ironskin. He's based on Maneater and Tyrant parts with an axe from the Minotaurs set (actually its two Minotaur axes combined into one) and a fair amount of greenstuff.
The Bulls, as mentioned above with extra armour and Irongut bits.

I am really impressed. the minis are painted well, but more than that the theme looks fantastic across the unit. An army done up like this will be quite a sight indeed.

Nice stuff-very nice armour. Care to share how you did it?
The armour -- like everything else in the army bigger than a Gnoblar's brain -- is drybrushed over black. In the case of the armour it's foundation dark grey, foundation light grey and white, but leaving a lot of the black to keep it dark. If you meant what I made the extra bits of armour from, I cut up the little tabs that break off metal screw-on caps on liqour bottles. Obviously I had to go through quite a few but anything for the art, right?
Some more finished models. I already posted the BSB in the Show Us Your BSB thread, but here he is again.
Bauge Ironskin, little brother of Suttung Ironskin.
Other angle. Bauge is mostly a Tyrant but with a plastic gutplate that matches the banner top.
This trio of Bull Rhinox Riders is one of my favourite units in the army. As always I added armour plates but also chains since I felt not even an Ogre can control a fullgrown Rhinox with his knees. I gave them Irongut weapons so they would be a able to reach down to strike at any thinlings foolish enough to stand in their path.

Hot on the heels of the very biggest models (so far) are the very smallest.
I'm not a huge fan of the Gnoblar plastics so I wanted to spice up the units a bit. This one has a Dwarf treasure cart from BfSP.
This one has a Pump Wagon. And no, not all the weedy little green guys are technically Gnoblars. None of my Ogres ever noticed.

The pump wagon is great in there. The unit looks like a pile of trash and tiny little greenskins.

Thank you both. More is coming.
The Leadbelchers were the first models I made for this army. At the time, I wanted a visual link to my Orcs & Goblins as I would be using them as Dogs of War long before I could field a whole army of Ogres. To that end, I added Night Goblin Fanatics as ammunition for the cannons.
Slaughtermaster. I'm happy to hear the rumours of a non-magical great weapon option for him in the new book.
I only have two Maneaters and they don't have pistols. I may have to change that soon.

Pretty amazing army matey, I'm very impressed indeed I love the red skin tone, and even more so the justification behind it I think the armour is awesome; most people when they use heavy drybrushing, it looks chalky and a little odd, but you've used the effect to very good use. And, my favourite model is the Battle Standard Bearer. It's such a clever conversion, and one that earnt you a Pet Gnobbo, enjoy!

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.
And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

My first Gnoblar, thanks mate!
I'm at the end of my pictures but at least I've saved the biggest model for last.
The guy on top i Hrungner Slavebeater, the Giant's name is Mokkurkalfe. It took a silly amount of sawing, bending, filing and cutting to get the Giant into this position. I'm really looking forward to making models like this in Finecast in the future.
I've reached the end of my pictures. I have some Ironguts, a non-converted Butcher and a bunch of upgrade gnoblars that I haven't got any pictures of. I also hope to get some good pics of the whole army on a proper gaming table, but that won't happen until the new army book is released.

I finally got to play a couple of small games with the new list after my first two opponents cancelled.
This was part of a campaign and I had to use the same 1000 points list in two games. Percentages were a bit stricter than normal which effectively meant I could have no lord and only a single hero.
My list: Tjatse the Gorebelcher (lvl2, lore of great maw, general, armour of silvered steel, luckstone, great weapon) 5 Bulls (ironfists, banner, bellower) 4 Ironguts (banner of discipline, bellower -- butcher here) 3 Mournfangs (heavy armour, ironfists, bellower) 3 Leadbelchers 18 Gnoblars (trappers)
In short, I got outmanoeuvred by a High Elf army and a lot of Ogres got hacked to pieces by S5-6 attacks with rerolls to hit. Hard to soak up the casualties with so few points. Ended in a big loss. Really missed not having any Sabretusks as he had an Eagle that owned the movement phase.
Second game was against other Ogres, very similar list but with more Ironguts and Bulls but no Leadies. Very close game that ended in a minor loss.
Getting all protective gear for the Butcher was a mistake. Both my opponents simply directed their attacks against the Ironguts even though they didn't know what he had, simply because his toughness is higher so the save was a complete waste. A Ruby Ring would have been much more useful.
The Leadbelchers and Mournfangs were the most successful. The Leadbelchers were able to get several rounds where an average result would have resulted in a panic test, despite there being only three of them. I look forward to trying bigger units.
Holy Gnoblar...from the conversions, to the coloursheme: A completly amazing army. Can we get a groupshot please?
Thanks. I had planned to get a few army shots in the bigger games I had planned but they got cancelled. I hope I get a new opportunity soon, they'll be at their best on the tabletop.
And may I also add, your 100 Nightgoblins are madness!!!! How did you not completly freak out by painting them?? And I'm afraid to paint 50 Gobbos...
All it takes is a quick but effective paint scheme and a lot of patience. I love big units so I think it's worth the effort.

Finally I have something painted for my Ogres again. Not much but it's something.
These Knights Gnoblar are obviously counts-as Sabretusks. Too good not to have. Pretty fun to make too and the lions are nice models that I happened to have in my bitz box after I used the HE Chariot for my Daemons.
Unfortunately for my Ogres, December will be another month of focusing on Greenskins. We have a new year's resolution running on Da Warpath and I promised to paint 300 models this year. Right now I'm at 218 so quite hard but not impossible to finish since most of the remaining 82 will be Night Goblins. I promise to paint some Ogres come the new year though!

I love your army! Fantastically striking. Those gnoblar knights are very creative!
Your color scheme makes me think of uruk-hai from The Lord of the Rings, with the red skin, black-grey armour, steppe-like bases and pale green gnoblars. Just out of curiosity, was that intentional? Or is it just me that likes the movies a little bit too much?
It was a terrible, indescribable thing vaster than any subway traina shapeless congeries of protoplasmic bubbles, faintly self-luminous, and with myriads of temporary eyes forming and un-forming as pustules of greenish light all over the tunnel-filling front that bore down upon us, crushing the frantic penguins and slithering over the glistening floor that it and its kind had swept so evilly free of all litter. Some nice bits on my table: a Banelegions Sea Devil, Hunter and saddle from the Stonehorn kit, a Pirate Maneater head and some bottle caps. It's going to take me some time to get this ready for painting but it should turn out rather interesting I think. The Sea Devil model is very nice, good detail and a better fit than most Forge World kits I've done (though I've yet to try any of their recent releases).
I will run the Sea Devil as a Stonehorn. It won't fit very well on a Stonehorn base as the legs are too wide but it's not like I would bring this guy to a competitive game anyway. I will probably make a very big base for him.
I've decided to name him Ahab the Whaler. First person to spot the literary reference gets a Gnoblar. Be quick, they don't come any easier than this.

I forgot to take a closeup of the finished Stonehorn though. Maybe next time.
I have a big game planned with my brothers next week (2x4000 per side, plus SoM) so I need to finish a few nice models to bring. I want to finish Ahab the Whaler (a few posts up), all of my pledge for January and a few more Ironguts.

A Stonehorn. Chose him over the Thundertusk as I love the face of the beast. Hardly converted at all, just a few bits of armour. As you can see in the last picture he had a little tail accident when I took these pictures.
8 more Leadbelchers. I always used them because they fit the Ironskins, but now that they are more useful I felt it was about time I got some more.
The Curs'd Ettin was a pleasure to paint, and quite quick too. The skin has a good texture that is very good for drybrushing. I added some armour to him to fit my army better.
Size comparison. The Ettin is about as tall as the plastic Giant I suppose (not sure, I don't have one). I love his freakish body proportions.

This army looks sick!
I have looked through this thread twice, but have been unable to find the method you use for the nice red skin. Obviously, from what you have said, it is drybrushed up from black. Do you mind sharing the exact method that you used?
Also, how have you done the Ogre pants?
Thanks
Anton28 Feb 2012
Thanks!
The key to drybrushing over black is foundation paints. Regular red would need more steps to get the same coverage.
Since I've neglected to do so before I'll post my full recipe:
1. Assembly 2. Add extra armour bits 3. Sand base 4. Black undercoat 5a. Skin: heavy drybrush of Mechrite Red 5b. Skin: light drybrush of Macharius Solar Orange 6a. Pants and wood: touch up with black if you got any red on them 6b. Pants and wood: heavy drybrush of Khemri Brown 6c. Pants and wood: light drybrush of Dheneb Stone -- at this point parts of the skin will also get a very light drybrush of Dheneb to bring out the details more, such as faces and knuckles 7a. Metal: touch up with black 7b. Metal: heavy drybrush of Adeptus Battlegrey 7c. Metal: light drybrush of Astronomican Grey 7d. Metal: very light drybrush of Skull White 8a. Nails, teeth, eyes: pick out in black 8b. Nails, teeth: pick out in Khemri Brown 8c. Nails, teeth: drybrush (where possible) or highlight Dheneb Stone 8d. Eyes: pick out in white 8e. Eyes: add black pupil dot 9. Any other details 10a. Base: drybrush Calthan Brown 10b. Base: drybrush Bronzed Flesh 10c. Base: paint edge Scorched Brown 11. Touch up any mistakes 12. Add a few grass tufts
A heavy drybrush should cover most of the area but leave the darker colour showing in the recesses. A light drybrush should only stick to raised parts. Obviously this takes some practice to get right but it is a straightforward and very fast way to paint once you get the hang of it.

Thanks.
I've done some more Ironguts that I don't have pics of yet and a Scraplauncher and some Mournfangs in the works, but nothing as fancy as the big conversions that are already there.
After that I'll probably paint other things for a while (continue on my Greenskins and maybe start a new army), but at some point I want to return to this lot and do Maneaters and Lore customised Butchers.

thanks for the painting recipie. did u use gw brushes also? was there any washing once you were finished the drybrushing?
Anton06 Mar 2012
I use a standard brush (GW currently), a GW medium drybrush, a GW small drybrush and a detail brush. The detail brush is currently GW, but a Windsor and Newton Series 7 will do the same job and last longer for a higher price. Which one I choose is often a matter of convenience (whichever is easier to get when I wear one out).
I go through medium drybrushes like crazy. I use them a lot and drybrushing is tough on the bristles.
No washes on this army. I'm thinking about using one or two on my next one though. It will still be mostly drybrushing but a couple of washes could soften a colour or two so I'm going to try that once I get a few models. A link will appear in my sig once I get a blog going on the appropriate forum.
