Just had quick question for you all about conversions. How much of the model has to be gw to be considered legal? I was thinking about picking up a fig from a different company, adding some gw bits to it and calling it good. The only thing stopping me is if it wouldn't be 'legal' to use because it wasn't a gw model.

If by RAW, you mean "Reg06's Audacious Whims", then you'd be right.

At a tournament, it depends on the organizer. I've heard 2/3 must be GW minis for an official GW tournament. If you play in a GW shop you can get away with a few models that are entirely from another company, but they might stop you from playing if you were trying to use entire units from other companies or huge monsters (but mostly only if the manager is a jerk).
At an independent store, you shouldn't encounter any problem.
So really, talk to the owner of the shop you want to get things started at.

As Reg says it all depends on where you play.
The UK used to be the strictest on what you could use and for this reason I used to stick to all GW minis.
These days all the tournaments I play are not run by GW and I play weekly at a local club, none of these require any models at all to be GW, just a fair rep of the unit it is supposed to be.

At some GW store the mini has to be 90% GW, or at some where the fist has come down you can't even just do head swaps from other companies. Because people where comming in like oo where did you get that model/head and you had to refer them to non GW products... But scratch builds you can get away with A bit more I think, nto to sure how much...

Many GTs are anywhere from 50 to 75%, though some do not have a requirement, though the model must be at least the same size as the one they use... so it can be bigger, but not smaller. At a GW Store, or held event, I have also heard 90% of the model must be GW, though they cound greenstuff as GW product since they sell it. I think it is a purely judgment system though, because if you are playing a model that doesn't exist they would probably allow more non-GW stuff.
