woooooow I'm in love with Bragg the Gutsman. I gues the cat cavelry will be loved by manny now with this new angle shot. it looks gorgeous
Lakedrinker13 Aug 2011
Woah! I didn't expect this one either...
Golgfag: Meh, little weird... I have never liked (and probably never will like) special characters, but he's nice and detailed. A good sculpt, if a bit eclectic.
Bragg: Come on, I'm using the name Bragg! Not bad, I'd like to know something (anything!) about the character before I pass judgment on the model.
Hunter: The paintjob makes his face look ridiculous. Nothing special. Cool rules for the vulture, hopefully.
Firebelly: Too savage orc for me.
Mournfang: Glad for confirmation on the name finally. I like it. The head is still ugly as hell, but I'm liking the rest of it. New angles make all the difference.

The mournfang cavalry I am still not sold on but that angle does make it look much better. I can see I'm going to have to dispose of Warriors of chaos on ebay to fund some new ogres.

Goldfag looks over the top, the model is just too busy. Its a study in contrast to Bragg, who is much more restrained and makes for a far more dynamic miniature. I don't get the Firebelly and I don't see him fitting in my army. The cavalry still looks too small and the rider is too high, the new angle does nothing for me. Out of all this lot the only model that I love is Bragg, still waiting for a new Tyrant model.

Fire-breathing Ogres! Yoga-Flame!
Those are some awesome looking models, though they almost seem strange when you compare them with the older sets. Is that because they're all fine cast or is that the paint style they're using or what?
Either way I love the look of those characters.
frankanelli14 Aug 2011
I agree i think they have a slightly different look to them, i think its because they aren't as fat, which may be attributed to the sharper lines of the new modeling process.
Ogur14 Aug 2011
Personally I think I'll drop the saddle on the mournfangs. The riders are too high up for my liking. And I think the mounts look more 'beary' from the front. Bit of Bear cat mixy like thingy. Ish... And stuff... Can't really explain it properly. They're not ugly at all, just the saddles put this rider way too high on the mount. It breaks with the line of the model. If they were lower and tilted forward a bit they would appear to look faster and meaner.

if they were lower they would be to far back on the model and most definately would look far more awkward. I'm pretty sure no matter what ogres are riding they are going to look to big At least if it's cavalry size

So much win...
These new pictures have changed (somewhat) my opinion of the new Ogre models, primarily in terms of the Cavalry. From this Side angle I must say that the Mournfang Chatlery is much more impressive, from the previous pictures it seemed that they were much... shorter? I must admit the firebelly just looks pure awesome, the feral (nakedness) seems to be slightly offputting when put next to the rest of the army (at least the butchers wear pants) but his dynamic pose and the way that they have painted him... It's just awesome. Golfag is suitably epic, and seems to have just the right amount of armour (pants, gut and one shoulder). Bragg IMO looks good, however his weapon is the only awesome looking part of the model. The cowl just looks stupid on his large body. Hunter doesn't look that unique and seems to be taking a nap, but I want to see what his foot model looks like before I pass judgement on him.

I love these minis, but where'd all the fat go? At this point all the (suposed) fincastmodels resemble the (stunning) Avatars of War ogre more than their own line.
Having said that, Bragg is the man! He ain't fat at all, but boy what a sweet model. I also love the hunter, wind in his hair, leaning back a bit; that posture is what I would expect from one riding such a creature. Probably the most corpulent Ogre mini yet
Was wondering, would the Mournfang look better/good if ye put the ogre more to the front, as high up as possible to give them more of a dromedary feel?

I think the fat level is fine. The mounted ogres are all very chunky, as you noted. Bragg is in a weird pose, and we all know black is slimming. The only one that looks dangerously skinny (for an ogre) is the firebelly, at least to me. But that level of fitness makes sense if it was trained by the Celestial Dragon Monks. And you can still see moobs and fat rolls, so its all gravy.

Hey, just registered and signed in, bu I've been viewing the Stronghold for a few years now. I love all the new models, including the Mournfangs. Why you may ask? Because of the snow leopard, a feline predator in the Asian mountains that is stocky and agile. I feel like this is a much better mount for the ogres than a rhinox, because the cat will be able to maneuver the mountains where ogres may not. Yes Rhinoxes are big and terrifying and Ogrey, but I feel the Cat is more realistic in the Mountains of Mourn. Also, I think it provides a good contrast: ogres are fat and rolly, the cats are lean and huge. Also, it will provide some awesome modeling opportunities (Mammox as a "Great Mournfang", etc, etc). I also think the Firebelly will just be spectacular. I'm definitely going to be broke for a loonngggg time

does the firebelly remind anyone else of Dhalsim from Street Fighter?
Games Workshop, like major car manufacturers (or software developers), has a history of "borrowing" ideas from other medias (or competitors) and applying these into their products. This has neither been subtle nor discrete, for in the end the bottom line remains to create a product that many will flock to and increase the profit margin for the company.
In the past we have seen the likes of films and characters make their debut into the miniature games market, namey:
Tyranids: Derived from the original book (and later movie) Starship Troopers
Marbo (Catachan Imperial Guard Special Character): Dervived from the movie First Blood (Rambo)
This list may easily be added to by other members who have also seen other similarities, but is this is not a new practice. We as consumers rarely consider the politics that take place in the world of business and manufacturing, and this is probably what keeps most of us sane. From the store front, Games Workshop is selling a game and hobby based on fun and strategy. However, behind the closed doors is a corporation that is just as guilty of exercising "ethical and moral" business practices as their competitors...otherwise why else would such an organization require an army of attornies that dwarf [verb and pun] the size of all other miniature manufacturers and tabletop game system developers (pehaps even combined).
Please take note, the harsh tone to this reply is meant to draw further comments of both resistance and support. I am playing Devil's Advocate here, because honestly I have been a hobbyist of Games Workshop since the days when Rick Priestley had to put his pen into the rulebook. To this day I still enjoy the comradery of friends and fellow gamers, as we have watched the game of Warhammer Fantasy Battles, Warhammer 40,000, etc... evolve from the convention room floor into this global corporation. I, like many others, am outraged by the high prices of this hobby, however, this is as simple as Economic 101 (Supply and Demand). If you want the status of owning GW miniatures and desire to participate in the ongoing annual events scheduled by this company, then you should walk tall and proud. For the pastime gamers, there are other miniature manufacturers where you may purchase wonderful armies for a fraction of the cost...and there is nothing wrong with this. Simply put, playing at a local (or distant) Games Workshop Bunker is similar to belonging to a club membership - you have to pay your dues if you want to paricipate.
In closing, I eagerly await the arrival of the new Ogre Kingdoms army book and miniatures, for it is a refreshing change to see GW take the time to revise one the "less generic" armies, rather than seeing back-to-back revisions of the more popular ones. Happy Gaming to All...!!!

How is Nagash anything like Sauron? The only similarity I see is that Sauron, for a time (during the time of The Hobbit), hid away in Dol Guldur under the false name The Necromancer.

Super powered dark-lord of evil magic living in a mountain stronghold in a blasted wasteland where he is slowly building his army. Eventually a unique magic item (which happens to be made from the same material Nagash is mining, so that gets the Sauron + One Ring connection) is used to kill him before he can destroy the world. Later he arises for very brief moment in time. No other sorcerer was ever as powerful.

I guess I was thinking more about how their origins couldn't be more different. Nagash being an egyptian dude and sauron being basically a fallen angel. But I can see what ya mean, there's a lot more of a connection than I thought. Very interesting if I do say so myself (which I do).

Its just, I remember fondly the sense of excitement and wonder I felt back in Deceomber 2004 when I got my hands on the army box, and I have been a fan of many of GWs army releases (DoC in particular), but none made me feel the way the Ogre Kingdoms models did. Even now, when I dig out the old issues of White Dwarf from back then, I still get a little tingly and nostalgic. I see these models, however, and I feel nothing. Just completely indifferent. I will buy them, but just because they are marketed as Ogres, not because I feel that they are the Ogre Kingdoms...

Yeah, that sounds about right. I just miss the old grey skinned, loveable tubs of lard...

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.
And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

Good man! So too, shall I Personally I think the grey would suit these models better anyone, especially the fire belly, as it would give better contrast to the flames Grey skin was always the better standard option :')

I think Bragg is awesome! Don't care much for the others and will most likely use WF Rhinox Riders as mournfangs.
Can't wait to get my hands on a stonehorn though, just wow! F*** you Arachnarok!

I like them all. I like the whimsy and Tim Burton-esque sculpts of the monsters.
I agree that the Firebelly does look too thin. A little (or a lot) of Green Stuff to add some moobs and a big jabba the gutt on him and he'll fit right into my army. I am curious about how they rationalize him into the backstory of Ogre Kingdoms though.
I like the Mournfangs though I agree that the saddles look weird. If an animal like that turned sharply with all that weight hanging over it... ahh but why argue physics about a game with the word fantasy tied to it?
And to ressurect an earlier post about Nagash being fictional, Nagash (and Nurgal) are deities in the Assyrian pantheon, both associated with the underworld.

I think the new Rhinox and Mournfangs are the same model with exception of head. Take a closer look everyone and tell me I'm right!
