Smurfs GnoBlog

original thread ↗

This is just a continuation of a thread I started here.  I thought this would be a good place to record my progress with the Hobby League Im apart of.  So, once I get finished painting some units and start playing a couple games, Ill start posting pictures and reports of how Im doing.
Under a bridge, harassing goats. That's how I Troll.
I know that the new army book is coming out in a few months, but until then Im going to have to make due with the one we have now.  This is what Im planing to bring for my first 500 pts:
Bruiser with a great weapon, heavy armor, luck gnoblar

6 Bulls with extra hand weapon, light armor, bellower, standard bearer with luck gnoblar.

24 Gnoblars

That leaves me with 23 points left over.  Any ideas and suggestions on what to spend it on?  I was thinking of throw some magic items on the Bruiser, but I have no idea what.
Under a bridge, harassing goats. That's how I Troll.
Posted this in your previos thread:

Just moving around  som stuff in a 500 point list and came up with the following:

Brusier, HA, GW,

6 bulls, bellower

10 Trappers

Gorger

497

A little more units to move, and threaten gun line. Also you need 3 units to make a leagal army :)

You could move some stuff around but this list have a few more tricks then the other, I think
The one who'll win the war, is the one with the bigger club

Ogres in 8th:     W-L-D:     32-11-1 [Latest games: 1750 against Lizardmen - win]

This here is my petgnoblar Gronni.
And this is his wierd friend zKotte, who no one really gets...
Got my ogres started.  Once I figure out how to post better pictures, ill do it.  I need to do some touch ups and finish doing the basing, but I thought this is a good start. :)
Under a bridge, harassing goats. That's how I Troll.
It's a solid start. Those are nice ogres.
There are a few things that'd be great to see;
1) ye gods man, clean those moldlines!
2) More love to the stone. A drybrush, or a couple quick high lights.
3) Try out some washes. Thin them down just a little and they will smooth everything out very wonderfully and give you some nice depth.

They are solid ogres though. I particularly like the banner, and they do look very grimey.

Awhile back, when I made my first few Ogre purchases (before I found out about the new Army book), I decided to make a list of what I wanted to do for the Hobby League that Im apart of, escalated up to 2400 pts.  Which is:
Tyrant
   Thundermace,   Heavy Armor, Warpstone Necklace

Slaughtermaster
Fencer's Blades, Crown of Command, Halfling Cookbook

Bruiser
Great weapon, Battle standard (Dragonhide), Heavy Armor

9 Bulls
Extra Hand Weapon, Light Armor, Bellower, Standard Bearer   (look out gnoblar)

6 Bulls
   Bellower

6 Ironguts
Bellower, Standard Bearer (Rune Maw), Gutlord

30 Gnoblars

30 Gnoblars

Scraplauncher

Scraplauncher

Gorger

Gorger

Comes to 2394 pts.
I guess now, since the new army book is coming out, that this has all gone down the drain.  Once we do have the new army book, Ill have to take a look and see how I can revamp this list.  Any suggestions on the rumors we have?
Under a bridge, harassing goats. That's how I Troll.
My local group has started the slow grow league the last week of August, starting at 500 pts.  After a few practice games, I changed my list from above to the Following:
Bruiser, Cathayan Longsword, Heavy Armor, Luck Gnoblar, (Cant remember the name, but gives him the 5+ ward save and you have to roll to see if he takes a wound at the beginning of the game)

6 Bulls, Extra Hand Weapon, Bellower, Standard Bearer (look out gnoblar)

30 Gnoblars

496 points

The one game I got in before Aug. ended was against Bretonnians with the Battline mission.  Honorable mentions of the game was the only thing I lost was the unit of gnoblars  and 3 ogres and my ogres wiped him off the table.  Big victory for me.
Result: Win

The is my list for September, using the Meeting Engagement battle for the month, and adding 300 pts. (Cant use the new Army book until Oct. so the league organizer and I can get familiar with the new book)

30 Gnoblars

Scrap Launcher

2 Leadbelchers

First game was against an all Goblin army which had the following:
20 Night Goblins w/ Spears, Netters, and a full Command group
20 Night Goblin Archers
10 Forest Goblin Riders w/ shortbows, full Command group
5 Squig Hoppers
Goblin Big Boss w/ Spear, Light Armour, Gigantic Spider, Magic Items
Night Goblin Great Shaman w/ Magic Items

Total: 799 points
I have to say, this game was pretty lopsided.  He had some really bad rolling.  His shaman was with the archers, and he killed at least half the squad by himself through miscasting two or three times.  My Gnoblars and Scraplaunchern charged and chased down both the Hoppers and Goblins with spears, and his Spider riders charged my Leadbealchers, which fled, and since the charge failed, my Bulls counter charged the next turn, and cleaned up.
Result: Win
Under a bridge, harassing goats. That's how I Troll.
Sept, game 2 vs The Empire

Captain Augustus 79
Great Weapon, Magic Item(s)

Lv2 Bright Wizard "Dragon of the West" 105
Magic Item(s)

20 Halberdiers 140
full command group

10 Handgunners 120
full command group, repeater rifle

10 Greatswords of D'Attre 130
full command group

8 Knights of the Benevolent Hand 224
full command group

Total: 798
(The names of the units are purely fluff oriented)
I had a hard game against this list.  Second turn my Scraplauncher exploded, one of my Leadbelchers misfired and killed himself.  My gnoblars charged the Greatswords, hopefully to try and tie them up for a turn or two.  The gnoblars took only one wound, caused none, and promptly ran off. My ogre unit got caught between said Greatswords and Halberdiers.  Didnt last long but I did get his General and I did wipe out his Greatswords, which was pretty much all I killed the whole game.  (Had horrible rolling all game  :()
Result: Loss
Under a bridge, harassing goats. That's how I Troll.
Sept. Game 3 vs Dwarfs
Thane 142

16 Thunderers shields, command, 225

27 Warriors, Great Weapons command, 295

cannon 135

Total 797

Closer game, but my horrible rolling continued.  You can tell the Warriors I hate them. And the cannon.  My bulls and scraplauncher chraged the Thunderers, killed everything on the charge, and I made my Bulls overrun off the table so they wouldnt get rear charged by the Warriors.  Warriors charged my Sracplauncher and killed it.  My Bulls came back on the board right behind his canon, which they killed the next turn.  After the killed the Cannon, they got charged by warriors, I challenged his thane, killed him, and completely wiffed the whole rest of combat, which made me run off. I killed everything except the Warriors. (Did I say I hate them?)
Result: Loss

Sept. Game 4 Vs. Skaven

Warlock Engineer
lvl 2 wizard

20x Clanrats
shields, full command, poisoned wind mortar

20x clanrats
shields, full command, warpfire thrower

4x Rat Ogres
masterbred rat ogre
2x packmasters

Doomwheel

Total-796 points

Horrible rolling STILL continued.  It was so horrible that it infected my opponent.  (I think this might be a new strategy!  :D)  My first turn: Scraplauncher moves up, misfires, charges right back into my unit of Bulls and kills one.  My Leadbelchers fire at his rat Ogres, 4 of the 6 shots hit the packmasters (which there was only two), kills them and does a damage to one of the rat ogres (which are stupid the rest of the game).  His first turn:  Miscasts, kills 25% of his own clan rats, and they promptly run off the table.  He charged my ogres with the Doomwheel, and I win combat, but we stay locked in combat.  My Second turn, I win combat against the Doomwheel again and he starts running (which I chase off the board the next couple of turns).  Couldnt get my gnoblars or leadbelchers to rally. Through horrible positioning and terrain, he charged my bulls with his other clanrat unit in the side and made them flee.  Next few turns where positioning and rallying various groups and his warpfire thrower exploded.  Bulls rally and attempt to charge his clanrats, which he decided to flee with.  All in all, It was pretty horrible rolling on both sides.  It made me mad I didnt get points for his first group of Clanrats that ran off the table first turn because of his stupid poisoned wind mortar was still alive.
Result: Win
Under a bridge, harassing goats. That's how I Troll.
Sept. Game 5 Vs. Vampire Counts.

Vampire with Earthing rod and Nightshroud

Necromancer

Skeleton Warriors x20
Full Command

Crypt Ghouls x17
Crypt Ghast

Corpse Cart
Unholy Lodestone

Varghulf

Total 799

This is my last reportable game for the month of September.  Since the battle of the month was Meeting Engagement, his Ghouls and Skeletons both rolled a 1 and where placed in reserves, which left his Vampire and Nercomance kind of out in then open.  I got to go first, which was mostly used for posturing.  he Leadbealchers shot the Varghulf but only managed to do one wound to it.  My Scraplauncher moved up and shot his Necromancer,  got a direct hit and out right killed him.  His first turn, the Corpse Cart charge my Gnoblars (which ended up in a draw) and the Varghulf charged my Unit of Bulls, but I won combat and the no retreat wounds finished him off.
My Turn two, the Bulls charged some Zombies he created (which they wiped), Gnoblars where still trapped in combat with The corpe cart, and my Scrappy shot and killed a few Ghouls. His turn two, the skeletons chraged my bulls, Ghouls tried to chrage but failed, and his Corpse cart was still being dragged down by my Gnoblars (I couldnt hurt the thing.  The only way I was killing it was that I was outranking him).
Turn 3, I finished off the skeletons, Gnobar finally dragged down the Corpse Cart (The best theryve done by far) and my Scraplauncher moved up again and fired at the Ghouls but missed.
His turn 3 he charged his Ghouls into my Bulls.  I won combat, but her stayed and took more wounds because of the No retreat thing.
My turn four, I charged the Ghouls with me Gnoblars and Scraplauncher and took down the rest of the Ghouls.
I only lost 2 or 3 Bulls and about 4 gnoblars through the whole game.
Result: Win

Couple of things Ive learned over playing my first half a dozen games with ogres.  One, I have a hard time against rank and file troops with a strength of 4 or better.  Since I cant use the new army book till next month with my slow grow league, the points spent on light armor wasnt worth it, so I kind of had to hide behind the toughness 4 of the Bulls.  I just cant kill enough of the high strength rank and file guys.
And because of that, there was only one time where my Bruiser had to take an armor save.  Just once!  Usually what happened is that I would loose combat by a couple, fail my leadership and run off.  Then they would chase them down.
Gnoblars are pretty much crap. (in the last army book at least)  Usually what would happen with my block of 30 is they would charge, kill nothing, a couple gnoblars would die in return and they would just run off.
The Leadbealchers have been alright.  Nothing to amazing.  Im going to have to play with them with the new rules to see how they fair.
Ive had some bad luck with the Scraplauncher.  Two times its blown up from misfiring.  The few other times I shot with it, most of the time it scattered a long ways.  So at this point and time, I think it serves best as a flank charger.  It actually hits pretty hard when it charges.  And with the new rules I might have to use it for that role more often.

That was my League Organizer.  He wanted to wait until we had our next 300 pt bump up (which happens at the begging of October) before he allowed it so that He, me and whoever can get the new Army book, read through it and get use to it.  I guess.

I finally got my first game in for the month of October. The scenario for the month is "Dawn Attack".  I played a Warriors of Chaos with the following list:

Chaos Lord - 270
Shield

Chaos Sorcerer - 145
Lv. 2

Chaos Warriors - 292
Champion
Musician
Standard

Chaos Knights - 270
Champion
Musician
Standard

Chaos Chariot - 120

Total - 1092

He got first turn, which he just did some posturing. My first turn, one of my Leadbealcher units did only one damage on his Sorcery. My Scrappy fired at his Warrior, misfired, and destroyed itself. Again. That makes 3 games out of six that it's killed itself on the first or second turn. So I'm no longer going to shoot the damn thing. It's now just going to be a glorified chariot.
His second turn, he tried charging his Warriors into my Leadbelchers which did the wound on the sorcery. I had them flee and the Warriors detoured into my gnoblars. Chareging killed two of them because of the trappers. Magic phase his sorcery shot up my unit of 7 Bulls which they ran off the table because of a failed morale test. During the combat phase the warriors broke the gnoblars. During my second turn the Leadies that where fleeing rallied, the other Leadies did two wounds to his chariot and I tried charging his sorcery which failed cause he fled.
His third turn his chariot charged my group of Bulls with the Bruiser in the side, won combat and ran down the rest of the group down. His Warriors charged my Leadies that rallied last turn and cut them down. My run three my other group of Leadies shot and finished off the Sorcery.
His fourth turn was repositioning and my last group of Leadbelchers wheeled and shot up his chariot doing nothing.  His fifth turn he charges the Chariot into the Leadbelchers and cut them down.  D

So thoughts for the game. I think I should of charged the chariot with my bulls with the Bruiser instead of trying to charge his sorcerer. Some bad leadership checks and run distances really screwed me over. He was rolling exceptionally well. Both the times he charged with his chariot he got sixes for his impact hits and the turn his sorcer shot up my Bulls that ran off, it was The spell that did D6 Strength D6 shots. And he got sixes on both rolls.

Just a quick update.  Ill played against the local Skaven player again last Monday for my second game of October.  Once again, it was a close game with only getting me the 2 vp for winning.
Heres my list for November:
Bruiser 159
Heavy Armor, Sword of Striking, Talisman of Preservation, Enchanted Shield

7 Ogres 247
Full Command, Additional Hand Weapons

6 Ogres 212
Bellower, Standard Bearer, Ironfist

6 Ironguts 283
Bellower, Standard Bearer, Look out Gnoblar

10 Gnoblars 60
Musician, Trappers

6 Leadbelchers 268
Bellower

Ironblaster 170

Total: 1399
Hero: 159
Core: 802
Special: 268
Rare: 170

The major edition for this month are the Ironguts.  I swapped out the Scraplauncher for the Ironblaster.  Hopefully it wont misfire the first turn in half my games like the Scrappy did.  I find it kinda funny that my unit of Gnoblars has slowly dwindled in size.  I'm of the opinion now a days with the new Army book, they work better in smaller groups with the Trapper upgrade.

The scenario for the month is Blood and Glory.

During the month of October, my local gaming group has decided to do a small, month long tournament.  We'll all play one game a week with a Halloween themed game to be played the last week of October.  The Scenarios are as follows:

Week 1: Dawn Attack

Week 2: Battleline

Week 3: Watchtower

Week 4: Pumpkin Harvest(note this is a very for fun scenario, designed by the event organizer, it will be Halloween themed and worth no tournament points).

The build totally was 1300 pts, and this is the list I whipped up to play for the month (we have to use the same list all month long).

Lord:
Tyrant (with Ironguts)
Crown of Command, Dragonhelm, Great Weapon, Heavy Armor, Talisman of Preservation
317 pts

Hero:
Firebelly (with Bulls)
level 2, Potion of speed, Ruby Ring of Ruin, Sword of Might
205 Pts

Core:
7 Ironguts
Full Command, Look out Gnoblar
336 Pts

7 Ogres
Full command, Look Out Gnoblar, Ironfist
259 Pts

Special:
4 Leadbelchers
Bellower
182

Special: 182
Under a bridge, harassing goats. That's how I Troll.
Week 1, I played an all Goblin army.  I have to my opponent credit.  Hes stuck with playing an all Goblin army ever since he started playing about a year ago.  But he has a hard time winning.  I think I tabled him by turn 4.  If I remember right, he had around 20 archers with a shaman, a 40 - 50 night goblin horde with spears and a shaman, a mangler squig, a unit of 10 spider riders, and a unit of 10ish sguiq hoppers with a big boss riding a cave squig.  My firebelly scorched his spider riders and squig hoppers over the game, my leadbelchers shot down the mangler squig first turn, and my Tyrant/Ironguts squad mopped the night goblin horde.  I felt bad for him.

Week 2's game was against Beastmen.  He had a couple 20 - 25 man blocks of gor with a shaman and lord gor variant, a chariot, the big 4 armed monster they have, a couple squads of 5 chaos hounds.  My leadbelchers took out the chaos hounds over the first turn or so.  My Tyrant/Ironguts unit got pounded pretty good this game, because I ended up charging the brick with one of the shamans and the lord, then getting charged in return by his other group of gor and taking his big monster thing in the side.  I ended up loosing them over a couple of turns.  So It ended up being one big cluster muff, cause my Bull unit and hi chariot ended up in the mix before everything was sorted out.  Ive came to realize that The Savage Beast of Horros and Wyssan's Wildform spells both stacked on his Lord can really, really mess up a Tyrant. This was actually a really close game.

So I ended up taking the tournament my LGS had for the month of October and this was the trophy I got for it, which I thought was pretty cool.
