If in our new book the Slave Giant had the exact same stats as it does now, how many points would you be willing to pay to put it into a semi-competitive list?

About 100?
There's an event in the UK that is giving all giants (and many other mon sters) a 100 point discount. This puts the Slavegiant on par with a Gorger, and I would be very tempted for that sort of money!

I don't actually think it's too badly priced, it just needs Throttle With Chain fixing. As a Giant, it'll always be plagued by unreliability regardless of the cost, but I think 175pts is fair for a monster which can feasibly inflict 3D6 S6 hits in a single turn.
I don't suffer from mental instability. In fact, I enjoy it immensely.
Gutlord Inquisitor: FORUM FIGHT! Me, I'm betting on the stronghold. Sure, they're outnumbered with thick skulls, stubborn bull-headedness and an inflated sense of self-worth, but hey, they're Ogres.

I use it competitively now. With great success.

As do I. I've included a Slavegiant in nearly every list I have ever played, and on occasion have used a pair. Doubling up on a unit with a pair of Giants is awesome (unless the first one rolls 'Headbutt' ).
Auere07 Aug 2011
As it is, the slavegiant is slightly overpriced. Nothing big, and it can still be competative if you play it well.
I think it should be 150 points, and a normal giant 175 points. That would be reasonable.

I'd be willing to pay 175 if throttle with chain was changed and it had stubborn.
Now, without stubborn and crap attack for big models 150 would be a big stretch, especially with what looks to be in the rare percentage competing.
I'd probably use one in less competative games though.

Kyte & Dave have it right.
Giants are extremely useful. People who look at it and complain about it's points are trying to make cross army comparisons which simply don't hold water.
I suspect our giant will stay the same cost, most likely have throttle with chain altered, and stubborn if within x" of the tyrant.

That would be some really nice and fluffy minor tweaks indeed.

supposedly, the Slave Giant is gaining Stubborn, but will remain pretty much the same in the new book. and it will run us 100 Gnoblars.

Fine with me. Certainly competing with all the rare slots in an army nowadays.
DJElam11 Aug 2011
I don't mind if they keep them 'broken' as it fits the fluff, but I hope they fix throttle with chains. If they do that I don't mind at all paying the same points we have now for them. I don't think our slavegiants should get stubborn as it won't really fit into our fluff anymore, unless they change that too.
Come over for dinner, we're having... YOU.
Auere12 Aug 2011
With the rumours that most ogre units in the new book going down in cost and the slavegiant being the only one going up, I suppose august and september will feature the last competative lists including giants.
200something points for T5 and 6 wounds doesnt cut it. My slavegiant just dies to shooting every time - which I dont mind at the current point balance. But making him more expensive and the rest cheaper is streatching it, and my giant will probably end on the shelf now.

Eurgh, I dunno if I'll take it. One of my friend's giants has been doing some amazing things lately. Just the other day he killed a warsphinx, then died and flattened the Tomb King on it.
Prior to that he got shot to bits by Empire and did nothing against a unit of clanrats. Until he fell on them and killed half the unit. Seems more effective dying than he does alive.

Well with Heavens Lore the ability to nerf shooting (his biggest weakness) he is a viable option. And with stubborn and I think somewhere I saw he is getting thump with club to replace throttle. He can be a scary option. And if they shoot him their not shooting the big wall of angry muscle running towards them.....

True, but that's a VERY expensive fire magnet, though it's something that could potentially kill things horribly. He might be useful to have in the same army as another big gribbly.
For example, if you rolled with a giant an a stone horn, at least one of them will reach their target because the opponent will focus on whatever he see's as the biggest threat. You might even get lucky and he'll attempt to bring them both down, fail, and both will live to see combat.

But you would still have to consider just why you did not bring a unit of 3 cats or a stone horn more instead of the giant. Both are more durable against any kind of shooting and vastly more powerful in combat.
Giant at 200p is going to be a fluffy choice.

Personally, if I knew my opponent was taking a monster heavy army, then that's the only time I'd take a giant.
There isn't much else in the game that can kill monsters as efficiently as a giant.

the big thing is our giant now has stubborn. This changes his roll from a fire magnet to a single monster flanking force. Run him hard down the outside edge of the board so your opponent has to get out of position to shoot him with infantry etc.
jtrowell12 Aug 2011
From what I heard, we indeed get the vanilla giant profile now, with stubborn and the club attack.
Fluff wise, some tyrant enslave their giants like in our former army book, while other do the same as O&G and assure the assistance of the giant by promise and/or threaths alone (something like "You can be our next meal, or help us catch it" or maybe "come with us, and we'll feed you !")
As the Ogres are "civilized" enough to server as mercenaries across the old world, it's expected that not all tyrants ill be as direct as the giant tamers of old. A tyrant that has server as a maneater in his youth might well recognize the help that an allied giant might give him.

I will still take my giant, as it is my fave model of all time (Marauder version, see avatar) but losing the slave fluff is a bit disappointing...

If he indeed has the normal giant profile, and costs 100 gnoblars, then he will be an undercosted Giant. thats awsome.
a Normal Giant has a very good chance at getting rid of big monsters because he has a higher Inititive then most and he isn't too shabby against infantry either. Stubborn will allow him to take on big blocks without much risk too.

Not really, cause he'll be exactly the same as the O&G giant, which means they're standardizing them with the only variations being race based option (like Marks Of Chaos or Savage War Paint)
Though, this makes me wonder what the OK giant customisation option will be if there is one.
