Help with tribe fluff pls

original thread ↗

With the new book coming out (hopefully soon) I have getting more and more excited.  However it got me thinking that the fluff of my ogres is kind of weak. I play 2 other armies Grey Knights and IG both have a deep fluff and history, both then I know more about the 40k world then the fantasy world. What little I have for my ogres isn't enough for me, my tribe doesn't even have a name.

I painted my ogres to have a light shin tone, I primed them white then painted them kommando khaki over it. I thought it would be good to have them be cave dwellers to explain why their so lightly colored.

Their banners are painted scab red with a black maw on them and the Irongut's armor is also scab red. I would like this to have some kind of meaning in their fluff because it looks great but my mind is blank as to how.

My bellowers all have animal horns, I did this to make them easier to see, and also I know how it feels to suddenly hear them in the distance. (I play a LARP) Hearing them coming before you see them like that really puts your nerves on end. I think that kind of primitive war horn is perfect for brutes like ogres.

I really like the look and feel of my army, but as I said before army fluff is important to me and I'm lacking there. So I'm hoping to get a little freed back, if nothing else a tribe and tyrant name that will fit with my models.

My singluar question.
Could your Ogres have migrated north into the Chaos Wastes during the Great Migration?

Living in such a frigid environment would have driven them into caves to avoid the freezing blizzards which roared for the better part of the year. This repeated exposure to the cold and almost complete lack of sunlight would also explain why their skin is so white and sickly.

For the matter of the Red Armour and banner... Smearing your armour and banners in the blood of your opponents would certainly add a certain fear into your opponents hearts. Seeing and entire army whose weapons and armour are coated in the frozen, caked on blood of their past conquests would certainly set fear into the minds of men and invoke respect by the followers of a certain angry Chaos god...

The horns of the Bellowers could have come from a herd of some Chaos spawn or just plain Rhinox's. According to general fluff most Tribes had an Uber-horn used to call Yhetees, so smaller versions would not be out of place. Also in the freezing cold, yelling will just make your lungs hurt while a horn could be used to set off avalanches.

I think it is best to determine the fluff for your army before you name them as the name will most certainly be related to their fluff, and deciding on a name for your army before thinking up their backstory will restrict your choices. Also choose the name of your Tyrant last.

Where Tribe lives > Backstory of Tribe (possibly include a theme) > Name of Tribe > Name of the Tyrant

Please incorporate, adapt or ignore as you see fit  :D
x 3 Their names are Mokuba, Archibald and Nibble.

That's a good idea. Another question, are there Orcs or Dwarfs in that area? As those are the two armies I fight the most. Having a good reason why you clash with one group more then others adds character to an army.

The banner and armor really aren't painted to look like blood but I could see them using blood as the coloring dye in their paint and soaking their banners in fresh blood til they took a deep red color. Blood as a dye, I don't think I would of thought of that on my own. But I don't think they would care any about the gods of chaos, the great maw well displayed throughout the army.

I had completely forgotten that they use great horns to call down the Yhetee. If the new Yhetees are like the ones in SoM I plan to run a unit of at lest 6 of them. So it wouldn't be odd at all for them to use those kinds of horns. Maybe I should model one of those large horns used to call the Yhetees. I could put it on my Slavegiant or the Mammox if it's any good.

Incorporate, adapt, consider, but I would never ignore someone who is honestly trying to help me.

I can't say I'm any closer to a tribe name, but at lest I believe I have a good base witch to start building a history for them. Thank you.

Well, if they're up against Dwarfs and Orcs then the Chaos Wastes are not for you. World's Edge Mountains would work great for the sheer amount of Orcs and Dwarfs that are there. It's directly on the opposite side of the Dark Lands from where the Ogre Kingdoms are. I'd say a tribe of Ogres marching over the wastes to the mountains on the other side wouldn't be that unheard of.

Kinda funny, the map I'm looking at must pre-date ogres, cause the Mountains of Mourn are labeled with "Orc and Goblin Tribes" instead of "Ogre Kingdoms".
Things happen, people die... usually when I'm around.
Something to consider is what battles you've actually played with your Ogres and if any particular event during one of these battles stands out.

The Guthammer name I use for my tribe and my Tyrant comes from my very first game of Warhammer. My Tyrant charged the Chaos Lord Prince Sigvald whose seven attacks didn't even glance my Tyrant before he landed 9 Wounds through a combination of Impact Hits and Tenderizer attacks. Sigvald was so perfectly crushed that I caused his retinue to break, and then my Tyrant ran them down too. I imagined that big bull just hurling himself gut-first onto the fleeing Chaos warriors, crushing them flat under his gutplate, and Guthammer was born.

Think about the heroic deeds your tribe has accomplished and try to apply that to your tribe's character. Ogres are nothing if not boastful.
When naming your tribe and you characters there are a few things I think you should think about. :>D

Naming your tribe-
It is very easy to name ogre tribes; simply add some word that has to do with noming things followed of or after a word that has to do with your tribe.
e.g. -tribe that uses blood as die, lives in the northern wastes, kills orks & dwarfs-
blood biter
green muncher
iron gobler
cold guts
north belly
waste masters
etc...

Naming characters-
When naming a character it will usually help to have a full name and a short name. The short name will tell the characters name and his/her major deeds, such as killing children, breaking walls, tacking canonballs to the gut, or smashing a hero in one hit :>D. The long name will describe deeds acquired in your games; this names can get to be very long.
e.g.
Eg Treemuncher Giant-tripper Eyebiter (By Eg Giant-tripper)
Brutzgub Gutsmasher Dwarf Basher Pansy Skewerer Saber Trainer Gnoblar Gobbler (by GnoblarGobbler)
Great Khan Barbarrossa, Daemon Bane, Slayer of Champions, Dwarf friend, the wrathful and indefatigable (by SirDanielHayesMBE)
You can find more names for characters here http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=11921.25

I hope this helps. :>D
