Archive - Ogre Kingdoms vs. Dogs of War

original thread ↗

Watch out for the pikemen. They're nasty against ogres.
Ways to defeat is ogres in the flank so they can't use their pikes or panic them with gut magic.

Also watch out for their cannons, although S 7 they are still pretty scary

actually, another thread may soon be needed - Dogs of war WITH ogres.

instead of getting a new army for the next tournament season, I want to get some Dogs of War so that I can use either a DoW army with ogres, an Ogre army with DoW, or a pure ogre force.

The chief advantage DoW have is their variety.  They have as core choices, heavy and fast cavalry, missile troops, ranking troops, and skirmishers.  These are ALL the main trop types in the game, minus war machines.  When a typical army (eg Dark Elves) will have 3 or 4 of those in the core section (eg spear elves, crossbowmen, and dark riders) the others will be restricted to special (eg shades and cold one knights).

They have a mix of shooting and combat, and work best as a flexible army.  They have the ability to take:

Monsters (ogres)
Pegasus Heros
Cheap hard hitting missile troops
Pikemen
Frenzied warriors with nice weapon options
Dwarves
Cannons
Offensive combat skirmishers
Halfling Hot Pot (stonethrower)...

The list goes on.  Basically, with such a wide variety of core choices, the DoW can and will do anything.  I think the key to defeating them is to specialise.  A MSU ogre army (mine) will have to crunch a flank and avoid the heavy cavalry to get stuck into the sides of units, and the missile trops.  YOU NEED TO BREAK THEIR LINE, or else pikes and cavalry combine to destroy anything you throw into the front line.

Alternatively, a more balanced ogre list, with a hammer unit or two, would be ebtter served to hit their front line hard with the hanner.  7 Ironguts and a Tyrant will kill a unit of pikes no problem, and with only strength three the pikemen wouldn't expect to kill more than one ogre.  Trollguts and toothcracker would help for survivability.  Get through their line with the hammer and exploit the gap, just try to avoid / gnoblar delay their cavalry counter-attack

I played dogs of War recently and here are some tips:

1. Never charge pikemen in any other position than flank or rear, unless it is to tie it up for a flank charge.

2. Crossbows kill!!!! Move behind cover or attack with a gorger or yhettes early on.

3. Ignore the Paymasters. Only engage them if in a knights squad, never when in pikemen. Knights are harsh unless you have good weaponskill and weapons. My Bruiser with Cathayan Longsword chased down a unit of knights on his own because he killed thhree to their wound.

4. Use leadbelchers on Pikemen!!! Just get into 12" range and fire. You should be out of their charge range and thankfully not have to face them. Only charge when a flank is exposed or the rear.

Don't Ogres fall under the "+1S when charged by cavalry, chariots or monsters" rule? Cause if so, they should be able to kill 2 ogres beofr you get to strike back.

But ogres are not monsters.  Does the 7th edition rulebook have anything to say to clarify this? (I don't have my own copy yet.)
To my knowledge, it doesn't. And has anyone seen the lore of beasts spell that is RiP and stops a monster from moving? Its cast on an 8 aswell.....Dirty lore of beasts....

dogs of war are a very mixed army but tend to have lower armour so i would say to use a butcher or 2 for lots of gut magic
I am now an Bruiser and soon I will have a Gnoblar
If only I could do Smileys
They are a very mixed army but I would say take a lot of units of bulls to break apart units. Remember to flank pike units! they gain the ASF rule when they are charged to the front
