Clan Lakedrinker

original thread ↗

I'd like to introduce the (somewhat) intricate background for my army.  Just for fun.

Bragg Boulderbeard's great grandfather, Logrod Lakedrinker, was the first and greatest tyrant of Clan Lakedrinker.  A more than likely exaggerated legend has it that that one night after he and his ten sons had finished devouring an entire herd of the lowland rhinoxen that populate their foothill home, the family became so thirsty that, together, they sucked dry and entire mountain lake, as well as the rivers feeding it.  They made their home in the dry lakebed, and captured an army of the blue gnoblars of the area to do their bidding.  Now, many years later, the sons of Logrod's sons have multiplied with strong ogre women from the mountains and have begun to pour out of their lake town in search of employment or slaughter - all for the one thing every Lakedrinker desires above all else...  Barrel upon barrel of (preferably non-toxic) liquid!

Clan Lakedrinker is extremely tight-knit and family oriented.  They look out for one another and are extremely hesitant to trust outsiders.  In fact, only a son of the Tyrant is permitted to challenge him to a pit-fight.  Though the clan is quite introverted, once you gain its trust you will experience an ogre tribe unlike most others.  They are merry folk, as ogres go, and have a veritable army of butchers under the stern eye of a single great Slaughtermaster.  Most of these act exclusively as cooks that perpare the enormous feasts and tend the incredible quantity of brewed drinks to fuel the tribe.

The clan's symbol is an image of the Great Maw consuming a clear blue lake.  Lakedrinkers also like to dress in the color green to reflect the comparatively verdant hills of their lowland home.

Maybe these guys worship the supposed whirlpool Maw that exists on the other side of the world? It's in the Great Maw lore in the Army Book.
Hm...  Not a bad idea, it certainly fits with the symbol.  However, I don't think they would know of such a thing.  It says in the book that ogre travellers who have been across the sea come back with those stories.  since the Lakedrinkers don't tend to travel much, or interact with other tribes very often, they probably wouldn't have heard the stories.

That's a great theme for a different tribe though.  Probably coastal/pirate ogres!

That's true. Hmm; maybe their water-wells are all shaped like Maw teeth?
Maybe they are.  If I ever find the need to model up a Lakedrinker water well, I'll think of you.   :P

*Chuckle* You're welcome I suppose.
Well I've just completed my first unit (6 bulls).  That is to say, I've completed all but dipping and basing.  I just did my first freehand, and used a (crappy, home-made, didn't know what hell I was doing) wet pallette for the first time - so I'm getting pretty excited about this army.  In light of that, I'd like to add some more to the Lakedrinkers' lore.

Clan Lakedrinker at War

A Lakedrinker will only get up out of his seat for two reasons; either to get a refill of his drink, or, when the drink's all gone, to beat the blazes out of somebody who's got some.  When preparing for a real battle, the Clan members daub themselves in dark blue war paint.  Some ogres streak themselves with bold lines, others paint crude renderings of a blue maw onto their shoulders, others simply smear thier faces until a suitably fierce effect is created.  Most Clan ogres all take some manner or keg, flask, cantine, or drinking horn to battle - just in case they get thirsty in between bashing in skulls (which they always do).  The gut-plates of the Lakedrinkers are either cast bronze, or iron - painted in the likeness of the clan symbol.  The enormous, filthy, breeches worn by clan warriors are always earthy brown, verdant green, or some murky shade in between.  This has been a tradition since the founding of the lakebed shanty-town.  The Lakedrinkers, being a family-based patriarchy, generally nominate some of the closest relatives of the Tyrant (who is himself the most direct descendent of Logrod) to be unit leaders such as Crushers.  This is partly tradition, and partly to avoid politics and infighting during meals and tactical meetings.

Also, for clarification, the Lakedrinker hometown is in a dry, yet green, valley - just north of Gnoblar Country.
