CaNNiBaLLZ's Terrain art.

original thread ↗

Greetings all strongholders.

I have quit the strategy part from warhammer. (gaming) But i am still in for the art part.
I am now interested into making scenery and terrain. For my first terrain piece, i am making a some sort of trench or bunker hill. I already started making it and have done a wooden base and the foamy hill. Now im starting to cut a hole in it so i can fit models inside it. I will be getting paints on 4th day of june. I would like some tips tho. What race should i put inside this trench/bunker, and how to position it. I was thinking about a turret mounted into a base on the hill.

Pictures are comeing soon.

imperial guard being assaulted by orks would be a classic.
Currently all ork models i have are WHFB. I was thinking about a tau bunker with summer weathering. Reason is that i dont have any other wh40k models than tau firewarriors and kroots. I have chosen firewarriors and gun drones for this scenery. Pictures comeing soon, so wait. After i have finished this terrain piece, it will MAYBE be sold to the person who bids the most, or ill keep it to myself.

Currently i have finished the wooden base and attached the foam on top of it. I am now cutting the foam into shape.

Update:

I have now finished the modelling and shaping of the bunker trench scenery. Now i have added the glue sand layer to make it look more realistic. Also i added 4 gunner holes to it so the gunners can shoot like inside a bunker. The sand area is only inside the bunker at the moment because i have to wait till the glue dries. The foil box is to keep the sand from messing up my room and to collect it easier so i can use it again. After the glue dries, i will add more sand to it and wait for paints. Perhaps ill add some grass also. Here are some WIP pictures.

This is the entrance.

Picture 2

Picture 3

Top down view.

After the sand process ill perhaps craft some kind of wooden roofs for the shooting holes to protect the snipers from getting headshot. I was also thinking about crafting a roof for the whole trench to make it a real bunker.

Any tips? I would like to hear some pros and cons. Should i make a cement or steel roof to protect the inside of the bunker from getting bombarded? I can also add an attachable roof for the inside view, or even modify the roof to make it look like real trench without the roof and attach the roof to make it a bunker and still keep the realistic look.

Feedback appreciated.

PS: Sorry about the double post. I really need to bump this.

Edit: -PPS: i will take a new picture next time and add an firewarrior to it so you can see the scale.
i'm inclined to go with the steel roof personally...

Yeah definetly leaning towards a some kind of roof. I was thinking about a cement looking roof and add some sensor towers on top or something similar. Also thinking about making an attachable roof so people can look at the interrior.

Update:
The bunker trench is olmost entirely covered with sand. Pictures comeing next time. Its starting to look good.

Update:
2 Sides are un"sanded". So its olmost ready and going for the phase 2 of the operation. Pictures comeing in the next bump.
Update:

I have now finished painting the terrain. Next thing to do is add the grass and perhaps paint the grass a little.
Here are some pictures:

If you have any tips or thinks to notify me, i haven't varnished it yet. So i can still paint it to look more realistic and add something. Tips from experienced painters needed.

It tastes like raisins too.

Next up is adding grass and starting to craft the cement cealing to make it look like a bunker.
Fun side update:

Painted myself my first fanatic. After getting new brushes, my paint quality has gone really good.

Image bombing is sure fun.

How do you like the paintjob? I actually added eyebrows. Just testing out my new brushes. (note that i'm a bad painter but after getting real artist brushes, my work got far greater)
It's all looking really good! I like the fanatic...

Update:

I have now finished the terrain piece. Its fully finished in every way. Next to do is build the bunker cement roof. Maybe ill add a gun turret to the roof or a generator of some sort. Also i have to add some shooters inside the bunker but i'm totally clueless what army to use. If somebody wants to buy this piece, they can either add the soldiers inside the bunker, ask me to order the shooters and ill paint them or you buy it without any shooters. I think it fits about 4 regular infantry models, also the entrance is a regular base size. If i add baseless models, it will fit more. This piece can be a part of the scenery, just a piece of fine art on your table, you can also add your own rules and invent a new ingame objective, like trash the bunker, or something. If anybody is interested, just comment or send me an PM. Anyways this piece is not finished yet, but its 50% done.
No more further stalling.. here are pics:

Im always looking for critisism.. Anything you think i should add?

~~CaNNiBaLLZ
Looking good so far and I know you said you don't game anymore however it maybe a good idea to increase it's size to be able to fit in a regiment or squad in there.

What about adding some spikes to repel attacks and barbed wire, discarded ammo clips, weapons, it depends on what game system you're going for.

Hope that's of some help.

@Jimmy

Im back for a short time to check out my modelling and i have decided to focus on the bunker cement roof area first and after its ready, ill think about adding spikes and barbed wire ect. Still open for ideas tho. Im more leaned towards a turret of some sort for the bunker roof.

I'm liking the trench emplacement, it is looking quite realistic, although I'd be interested in seeing a model stood in it, to see the depth of the dug-out area...

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
@Josh

The trench will be modified a little after i finish up the cement roof to it.
I will add a tau firewarrior standing in the trench on the next picture update. Although the firewarrior model when shooting from the trench only reveals the riffle and head. So i think its the regular depth for a 40k model. There are 4 holes to shoot from and actually 4 models can be fit inside. But i wont be actually making the models fit because i like to keep the realistic feel and not modify the body of the bunker anymore. (too much work and money lost)

UPDATE:
I carved out the roof and its similar looking like the hill of the bunker. I sand papered it down and made it really round. Then i carved out a 3 ogre bases large area on the top of the bunker roof to add sensor towers and turrets ect. Also added bullet holes from vehicles to the sides and now have painted it with a black wash. Next up is another black wash to make the base colour done. (since you cannot paint it with spray paint cause it will melt)

After that ill be adding a 1:1 chaos black and codex gray wash/drybrush and a codex gray dry brush and a 1:1 codex gray + skull white dry brush. Then add a chaos black wash to the bullet holes to make the cement look scorched. Also accept painting tips.. If anyone can assist me, it would be a blast.

I have:
blood red
scab red
blazing orange
chaos black
shining gold
goblin green
graveyard earth
codex gray
dark angels green
boltgun metal
sunburst yellow
dwarf bronze
skull white
enchanted blue
mithril silver
beastial brown
dwarf flesh
snakebite leather
bronzed flesh

So my paints are very limited. I have to finish the whole bunker by using only those paints.

ANY TIPS NEEDED..

UPDATE:

I'd be interested in seeing a model stood in it, to see the depth of the dug-out area...

Actually after some tweaking, i got a firewarrior standing inside the bunker and having about 2-4 mm space from head to cealing.. The bunker can fit not 1 not 2 but 6 FIREWARRIORS inside it. Also im making the roof re-attachable. So if someone decides to buy this piece from me after im done, you can fit 6 regular models in it.. Also its going to have a attachable magnetized turret on the top.. Pictures comeing soon.. Whats done already is, the sand piece with a little finishing touches needed.. And the top roof is looking like real cement.. Its carved into shape and painted.. Paints used: Chaos black, Codex gray, Skull white, Black spraypaint.. Colours offcourse mixed.. Next update comeing soon..

Also josh.. I was really happy to hear you say "quite realistic" Thats pretty much what i was going for :) Thanks for the support!

~~CaNNiBaLLZ
I'm really liking how its coming along! I love the idea of a turret on the top.

I look forward to seeing it when its finished!

Update:
Not much progress atm. Travelling alot and spending no time with warhammer.. But when i do get more time on my hands, ill start cracking up with finishing touches to the base and adding the turret..

~~CaNNiBaLLZ
Update:

Okay, I'm fishing for comments now. I'm clueless what to actually add to the top part of the bunker. It can be wooden planks, a metal sheet, more sand, corrugated iron roof, turret bottom + small house or something, flat surface with a sensor beacon or leave it be. At the moment I'm still open to ideas what race to use.. If someone is interested for buying this bunker piece (can hold up to 6 regular models inside it), let me know. I can make it a commission work and reshape it for your race. For example: i can make it orky  8>) . Or ill add sand bags and make it look more imperial.. I can reshape it into anything, add rocks and stuff. Heck, even barbed wire.. But still i need to know what race I'm making it for..

If someone wants to buy this, the price range will be from 25€ (as it is) to 60€ (Customed in your taste.)

Any tips and ideas welcome as natural..  Still no pics sorry..
