Napoleonic Ogres... and stuff

It appears that Warseer has taken a turn for the worse and isn't that safe a site to be posting on, so I'll do it here instead!!

My plog on seer has been going for a few months now, all about the emergence of my Napoleonic themed ogres. I'm hopefully attending a tournament with them at the end of July and so the target is ofcourse to have a completed army to the tune of 2400 points.

I will post more pics as the army has progressed further than these few models below, but for now. . .

I thought I should put some more meat on the bones of this project. It started with the model in the first picture as a test model, I've only ever used green stuff to fill gaps before to be honest so this was a BIG step up! I also figured there was no way I could sculpt at a smaller scale, so the ogres fitted the bill nicely. I went with the bellied ones largely because I'd bought a batallion box set ages ago and not really touched it - now was the time!



The theme came about from two sources, firstly I'd spent ages marvelling at the time and effort of loads of other ogre players on this very site's gallery, realising there were very few themes that had not really been attempted I initially thought about making an entire army of rat ogres armed with varied weapons. The second and deciding source was I decided to sit down and watch Sharpe to get my mind in the frame of warfare etc - the rest is history...



It takes bloomin' ages to make them but they don't half come alive when finished. I'll post the army list i'm looking to complete for the tourney, but I imagine with the new book due later in the year I'll continue to make them long after July (hopefully I'll get to include Grot's Greys, the famous Rhinox Cavalry regiment).



This is where the cost of the project went up - I decided to use hobbits as gnoblars, above being my scrap-howitzer. I've just ordered another 28 off the GW site as I can't find them at discount sites, £57. Shocking.

The project is fairly far along now, I have 18 bulls, 3 leadbelchers, the scrap-howitzer and the butcher for my list made, with only the butcher and 6 bulls remaining without paint. To finish the list I have to paint the large amount of hobbits that have arrived, build a bsb, slaughtermaster and a tyrant, then make 6 ironguts.



Pictures of all of these bits will ofcourse follow - as soon as I've got some aa batteries for my camera! The ironguts are likely to be engineers/gun crew so that they can look relatively in line with the rest of the guys but still carry great weapons. I've ordered a rhinox to pose as a horse for Lord 'Beef' Wellington who will be my Tyrant.



The group shot was nice to be able to take. It atleast proved to myself I could get an army together.

The traffic lights to symbolise whether complete, wip or unmade.

Now that is a very big unit Ogre bulls.
You convert fast, paint fast and this unit looks very nice.

How are you painting the white?  White is really hard to paint/shade and yours is coming out well.

Do you also have some background story of the how and why of this army (and then I mean in the warhammer world)?

@Dooppie - Mate I wish I converted and painted that quickly! These have been going since November I'm afraid and (whilst still WIP) these photos that you see are where I have got to in that time. Got to make another 9 ogres in 2 and a half months - and paint a lot!

@datalink7 - White is a pain in the proverbial, tis true. I've been starting with the light grey (name?) foundation paint, then mixing blue and black wash for a shade, then slowly build up watered down skull white, takes about three coats till it looks like a smooth transition.

@BirdHunter - Thank you kindly, I don't as yet, but now you mention it I'll have to think of something! God knows what but watch this space...

I'll hopefully have some photos of what is being made/painted currently when I've unearthed the mythical box of AA batteries my wife talks about as my camera is dead at the minute. My bits have come from dark sphere/gw so I now have no excuses (apart from the new chaos dwarf stuff I bought, the skink army I'm dipping, several ebay purchases etc etc) not to finish making my tournament list.

Then ofcourse the new book will come out and I'll have to assemble a whole heap of new stuff too - the joys.

Thanks for the rundown.  I'll try that technique.  My Dwarves are being painted with a lot of white (painting them like Roman Legions, so white and red) and was running into some trouble with the white.

I'm not very good at this whole plog thing... I've got the army up to 2400pts, until the new book is released anyway! Took the army to the Midland Open tournament and won best painted army - which was awesome and a nice reward for the months of effort put in.

Wow, very nice army (I love the bellies  )  I thought you would give the ironguts big cleaning poles and maybe put a cannon in the unit as a filler, but what you did was MUCH cooler.  Those IG swinging cannons looks awesome.

What an inspiring and well done army!  I really like the cohesiveness across the entire army both in terms of the modeling and the painting!

Ever thought of adding a Giant to the army?  Of course, the question would be whether to make the Giant match the army or the enemy.
