My Gnoblog: Or how I learned to steal everything from the Ogre Stronghold

original thread ↗

Greetings fellow Ogres!

Here is my first Gnoblog.  First, I'll explain my title.  I'm not the most creative person ever.  I like painting on occasion but mostly I love to play the game.  So I utilized these forums for inspiration.  As in, I stole most ideas from people on here.  So thank you!  :>D Some of the details I came up with myself, but most things came from browsing.

With that in mind, please feel free to make suggestions on what I should do to improve any of the models I'm posting!

First, I'll start off with my Giant.  He is nearly finished (just need to add some details like tongue and teeth to the Gnobs, blood effects at the arrow piercing, etc.).  I saw another poster on here who had scars on the giants back, so I thought I'd do the same.  Never really used Green Stuff before except to fill gaps so it didn't come out as good as the other poster but I still like the result.

I'll post the rest of my Army as I finish it.  It is actually 90% done, just doing final highlights right now.

I did have a question about blood effects.  What is the best way to make blood?  I've seen some that seemed too bright red.  How would you make the blood dripping from the arrow?

Looks great! I'd hit the scars on the back with a red wash to make 'em look raw. Can't wait to see more.
really nice. but like Clavicus said a red wash will make those scars look much nastier, and if you want to make them look fresh put some gloss wood lacquer on those scars...

Thanks for the comments.  I did add a bit of tentacle pink, but it is hard to see in the photos.  However, some kind of red wash would probably make it better.  I'll try it out and see how it looks.

I've got some more photos.  It is my unit of 8 Bulls, Full Command, and Butcher.  You'll see where I stole this is from the Dipping Thread.  Again, any tips on what to improve is very much welcome.

Full unit (butcher is in the middle):

Butcher by himself, again messing around with green stuff and didn't come out awesome.  Still learning.

looks great!

i like the butcher, just maybe add another smoother coat on the gut to make it more realistic...and add some blood and gore to him.
Lookin' good! Gore would definitely make the Butcher stand out. Some kind of apron too, if you're feelin' froggy...
I certainly want to add gore, and to more than just the butcher model.  However, I hadn't done blood and gore before on a model and have seen bad examples of it, so I have been kind of hesitant to try as I don't want it to turn out bad.  Once I find a good tutorial that I am comfortable with I'm going to add some for sure.

I also have to decide on some kind of tattoo to bind the army together.  I was thinking a red fist, but I'm not very good freehand so maybe three slash/claw marks might be easier for me.

I'm also thinking maybe snow on the bases.  I was really impressed with the blood in snow of this dark elf army:

But am not sure how to copy the effect.

ahh... yeah the butcher looks too much like a bull!!! he does not stand out at all.. had to look through the picture a couple of times to tell the difference.

Nice paint scheme and dipping you got there.

Yeah he doesn't really.  I have two Slaughtermaster models but didn't want two of basically the same thing.  So I tried a little converting which I haven't done much of.  Maybe after I add Gore effects he'll look better.

Here are my Gnoblars.  What are your opinions on how I should highlight the wood?  I think a drybrush of bubonic brown might be good but would value any opinions.  Still need to do some detail work as well here (eyes, teeth and tongues).

I did have fun with the unit fillers here :)

The Gnoblars behind that fence are great! I love the unruly mob look of them.

Love the Gnoblars and the barricades it gives them an air of deviousness.

Keep Calm and Praise the Sun!
Love the gnoblars and the painting overall, first of all.  But something made me giggle, it looks like the IronGut on the far right with the hammer got punched in his right boob.

Yeah, heh :P  It's a little more pronounced in the photos than it is in real life.  I do need to repair it though.  I think some of the dip ate away a bit of the paint.  Just need to go back over it with a bit of the skin color.

its a really nice job for a dipped army. There's only a few place where you can tell it was dipped.

the gnoblar look really nice, gotta love when people are creative about painting as little of them as possible :P

Realy nice army too see.
I love the combo of metal + bronze  :)

You can see that you enjoy paint those gnoblars...nice painted detail and fun too see how they standing on the base.

Nice work!!
Thanks for the comments everyone.  I will get around to doing some of your suggestions.  I got a little burned out painting so I haven't been doing much the past three weeks.

Here are my main characters:

Tyrant:

Slaughtermaster:

BSB (once I decide on an army symbol I'll add it to the standard):

In the pictures most of the "dipping" came out a little darker than it looks in real life, though after taking the pictures I think maybe I should go back over some of it and lighten it up.

Now here is my Scraplauncher which is a WIP.  I finished the skin and thought I finished the fur.  I was trying to follow this guide (like I said, stealing everything from this forum :P):

http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=12261.0

However, my fur came out far far darker.  I did my drybrushing purely against the fur.  Maybe I should have done some with the fur to get in the crevices?  Thoughts on how it looks?  Should I do it over again and get a lighter shade?

Good work, let's see an army shot! :D

+1 :>)
I tried sooo hard to find that one trapper with the giant stone hammer, never any luck :(

Did you find it in the store or is it orderable online? I bought about 4 packs of Trappers and various stores and it was never in there

ogres are the boulder rolling down at you.  you can side step it, run away from it or blow it up before it gets to you... but you can never ignore it.

I just ordered them online.  Didn't order any extra either, just the minimum packs to get eight.  I got pretty lucky I guess.  Got a good mix of figures :)
