Maximizing Base contact

original thread ↗

Forgot my rulebook at the store from last time but wasn't sure about this.

9 ironguts (3 wide) kill unit A, Unit B is behind unit A but more to my right, I overrun into unit B. The question that came up is do you maximize on an overrun? Lost the combat because it was 1 dwarflord and 1 support attack vs 1 irongut and 1 supporting irongut (couldnt hit hurt him).

Basically barely clipped unit B with the Ironguts, Couldnt maximize because of overrun. Was told I could only do a combat reform after if i won the combat (no real maximizing)

Can someone clarify this for me?
ogres are the boulder rolling down at you.  you can side step it, run away from it or blow it up before it gets to you... but you can never ignore it.
On overrun you move straight forward. If you run into another unit you run into them but there is no free wheel or other movement which allows you to maximize. If you win combat you can do a combat reform (or test to do it if you don't win... I think?).

That's all from what I recall... I'm sure someone else will chime in if I am mistaken!  :lol:

Thanks for the help!

Ill have to look to see if you can test LD and do a combat reform if you lose when i get my book back,

Yes you can.

Lol, oops.  We have been playing it that you maximize base contact before each combat (atleast when it's just 2 units fighting)  Guess we still have some 7th habits to sort out... :P
There is only news.  There is no good or bad.

It's your LD minus what you lost the round by.

i have my handy dandy IoB BRB here with me at work!  On pg 58, I read in the "pursuit into a new enemy" section, " The charging unit must wheel and close the door in such a way as to maximize contact, as they would a normal charge."  I don't see anything that leads me to believe that this overrun into a fresh enemy should be treated any differently than a regular charge.  I may be missing something though.  I am no rules guru.
Pursuit into a new enemy and overrun are two different things though.

The pursuit and overrun difference is good to know, didnt know you could maximize with pursuits so will help next game :D

No they actually are not.

BRB, Pg. 58 under Overrun!

If a unit charges into combat and, by the end of that round of close combat, all its enemies have been wiped out as the result of the combat (rather than the pursuit) the unit can choose to make a pursuit move, even with nobody left alive to pursue. This is an overrun move and represents...

very next paragraph...
An overrun is essentially a special pursuit move.

and...
All other rules governing pursuit moves, such as intervening units and terrain, apply to overruns.

Well, Pursuit Into A New Enemy on that same page says...
Carry out the charge as you would in the Movement phase, following all the normal restrictions.

including the above quoted part of....
The charging unit must wheel and close the door in such a way as to maximise contact, as they would with a normal charge.

So yeah, you have to maximize when you run into a new enemy if you are Pursuing or Overrunning.

so does the enemy unit have to be in the straight line path of the pursuit? or can the pursuing unit declare a fresh charge on any enemy unit within thier charge range?
Yes, the pursuer must run directly into the enemy as it is pursuing the fleeing unit.  The fleeing unit will always run directly away from the victorious unit (or directly away from the victorious unit with the most ranks in the case of multiple units involved in combat).  It is sometimes hard to pursue into a fresh unit b/c you only get to move the distance you roll on your 2D6 pursuit roll without getting to add your movement value.

The pursuing unit only charges a unit that is in its pursuit path.  I usually go through these steps during pursuit.
1)  Roll the dice to see how far the unit should go and measure this distance out.
2)  If there are no other enemy units in this movement range, then the unit moves directly forward.
3)  If this move would take the unit into contact with a new enemy unit, then the  pursuing unit instead declares a charge against that new unit and moves to touch it as if completing any other charge.

#2 confuses me a little,
so what if there is an enemy unit in range but would not come in contact if moved directly forward.

AkA lets say i charge and win combat.  Enemy unit flees right past another unit, that unit is 2 inchs to the side of the path.  Now i pursue and roll a 12 in range of the fresh unit, except that it is not directly in front of me.  Howver if i get to declare another charge against an enemy within charge range than i would assume i would be able to pursue into it even though its not directly in my forward movement line.

i guess the question is "is pursuing into fresh enemy the same thing as declaring a fresh charge against an enemy within pursuit range?"
No. When pursuing, you're following an enemy unit; you don't get to deviate, you have to move in a straight line. However, if part of your unit would hit the enemy, then you get to wheel and close the door as normal.

Actually is has been FAQ'ed that you flee from the center of the enemy unit that causes you to flee. Pg #6

Q: When a unit flees 'directly away' from another unit, does this mean that you turn the unit about its center, so that it will flee directly away from the center of the unit it is fleeing from? (pg 57) A: Yes.
ONLY IN A COLLAR CAN A OGRESS TRULY BE FREE....
Yeah you now flee directly away from the center. Normally this equates into turning 180 and running away, but with Hordes and other larger fronted units it gets messy. Example:

..[||][||][||]
..[||][||][||]
OOOOO
OOOOO
OOOOO
OOOOO

[||] = 40x40mm base
O = 20x20mm base

This is maximized and the angle for fleeing is not a 180 degree turn but instead somewhat southwest. This lets you set up pursuits that lead into other units flanks and such.

Yeah this was quite a big change for us when the "clarification" came out.

I made some diagrams when the FAQ came out to discuss this with my gaming group:

hehe.  i love the font you used for flee.  for some reason it seems fitting.
haha its great isn't it! well done on font choice!
