Snamelc's Ogre Gnoblog-o-rama

original thread ↗

Well, I have been a non-active member on this site for a few years now and figured I would get off the sideline and work my way into the community.  I started an ogre army about 4 years ago, and then stopped and built a 12,000 Warriors of Chaos army and sold it, then built a large Tomb King Army, then built a large Empire army, and now I have decided to dust off the Ogres w/ 8th edition and redo them right.  This Gnoblog will be about my ogre redo and building an army back up in style.

I sold most of the character models when I ventured away from the ogres and also got rid of a few of the special/rare models.  So, I bought a battallion box to boost my core and will build the characters and specials/rares from the left over models.

I am also making the world's easiest conversion on all of the Ogre units and I believe it is a pretty sweet looking trade off.  All of the ogres will have Orc heads.  They match up pretty good size wise and make for a look that people will take a second look at.

I am going to try to do all of the metal parts using non-metallic metal techniques.  It will all be rusted out metal w/ shiny metal coming through in spots where the rust has been worn away.  This is the first time I have tried NMM, but I think it'll be rough in the beginning and should look pretty good by the end.

I am shooting to build it up to about 2500-3000 points of all painted models.  I am competing in a staff challenge @ the local GW (beat each of the staff members in a game w/ the same list w/out losing, and get a free battalion), and I have decided to enter my 2500pt list.

I have a good start on the painting and the models which I have done over the last month and this Gnoblog should help me stay motivated to completion.  Please give me any feedback you may have, and I hope that I can learn from you guys as I progress in my hobbying.
So here are the first entries for the army.  This is the start of a 6 strong bull unit:

I cannot stand to put together the scraplauncher model!  So, I took the Giants of Albion models that I had sitting in my garage and I decided I would make them my scraplaunchers.  I have finished one Giant, originally it was supposed to be holding a rock over his head w/ 2 hands.  I decided to re-position him and make it look like he was throwing the rock across the battlefield baseball style.  The Gnoblar on stilts in the last picture will be put on the base (I got to get some giant feet to stick on the bottom of the stilts first) directing the giant where to throw the rock.  It is also nice because it can double as a slavegiant if need be.  This was easier to do than putting together a scraplauncher.

Next...I have the first character model that I have made.  This is also my first attempt at real "greenstuffing".  This guy is going to be my slaughtermaster.  I really enjoy how he looks, I just feel like the model isn't quite finished yet for some reason.  Maybe you guys could give me some suggestions.

This is the start of my 12 strong IG unit that will have 4 characters in the unit w/ them.  I love me some IG's and i think the NMM is starting to make sense to me, and you can kind of see it coming together on these guys.

I know a lot of you are probably about to throw-up in the nearest trash receptacle because the lack of basing on the models.  I have never been one for strong basing, but I want to do these guys right.  I was thinking of doing a flat gray stone look, but I have yet to decide.  Any suggestions on basing would be very helpful and hopefully I will start basing these guys here in the next week or two.
good painting dude love the slaughter master good use of orc heads and gs well done :) (though could do with downsizing the pics a bit)

chief b
when i have a big irongut horde i will start singing "we got deathstar (deathstar) we got deathstar (deathstar)"
I love the look of Orc heads on Ogre bodies! Can't wait to do it myself some time... maybe for my BB Orc Troll? Hmm..

Anyway, back on track, these look fantastic! I like the grim, dirty, and gritty look of your colors and painting style. Some bases will certainly help them pop. I would suggest doing some "badlands" style basing with a bit og green shrub to add some color to the army.

I'm torn on those heads. Some of them look awesome - the Slaughtermaster in particular is a great bit of work. But some of them just don't do it for me. they look too small and out of proportion. Just a note of warning, but keep up the good work.

The "Scraplauncher" is a great idea. Maybe the other Albion giant could be used in some way too - a Slavegiant would be obvious but still look good.

As far as basing goes, no matter what you do will improve the look of the figures. You can always do some practive on some empty bases to get the look before you put them on your figures.

The answer to everything is sabretusks.  There is no problem that can't be solved at least in part with kitties.

Quick Update....

Thanks for the comments I appreciate them.  The wife and kid will be gone for most of the rest of the week so I can get some good uninterrupted hobbying in, and will hopefully have some pics up after the weekend.

I do think I have come up w/ what I am going to do for the bases, and I believe I am going to go w/ a rocky, mirky swamp base.  I am also still considering a slate rock base as well.  I will make a couple different bases up and get some of your input on it.

I also, got the Giant feet that i was wanting to put on the bottom of the Gnoblar w/ stilts.  I will get that taken care of this week and get the scraplauncher based, I am excited to finish that model.

Thanks for the critiques and comments...keep 'em coming.
