Idlem's ramblings.

My ogres I've been workin' on. Hopefully these pictures will show, linking them from teh facebooks.



One of my bulls. Still has some detail work to finish up on.



First painted ogre. Tried out just dry brushing most of him for the skin, changed up technique for later Bulls.



A one armed Irongut. Maybe he lost the arm being defeated in a challenge or maybe he lost it killing a bloodthirster. Who knows? 




The Tyrant. First "real" attempt with Greenstuff. Anytime I've tried before was with an inferior putty and the results on my poor Skaven were often hidden away in a pit somewhere.



A bit off topic, but it's the girlfriend's first painted figure. Her poor ghoulie will soon be munched on by ogres.


Now, I got a problem as well. I made myself this Battle Standard. Only problem, I can't figure out who is Bull enough to protect the thing! I have made two possible candidates, and they are as follows.



The Standard.




Was an Irongut who became something of an alternate Tyrant or BSB. He's one of the two choices for my lonely standard. A bit of an old picture. He's had the cloak filled in above the hammer shoulder, arm green stuffed to look a lil' more natural and a bigger right hand sword.




Neckbeard the Great. One of two possible Battle Standard Bearers. (Or maybe a Tyrant?)


So that's what I got so far! Any comments or suggestions on the BSB would be greatly appreciated.

The painting is decent, but the blood needs work. It looks like red paint right now. There are plenty of very good blood tutorials on line, I recommend looking at some of them. As it is right now, washes of brown and purple would help to make the blood look like blood.
The base needs something extra. Adding the spare weapon is neat, but it's too plain right now, and the brown paint showing through isn't  good thing. If you glue on fine gravel (light grey or light brown) in patches after painting the mini, a simple brown wash and light drybrush (bleached bone is good) you will have some quick, easy dirt. And then you can add some flocking the bare spots. Easy, and a good basing can really make an army look good.
As for the bsb mini, I prefer neckbeard for two reasons; 1) I think it is a cooler mini, and 2) I don't like the big tyrant arms on unexpanded bull minis, and the sword in the left hand is crooked.

tldr; If you take one thing to heart, let it be that you need to clean those frellin' mold lines.

I think I am going to steal your one-armed ogre. a great conversion idea for a maneater model, since i have a duplicate or two kicking around. I thought you did a good job with the greenstuff too - I've tried a few sub-par epoxies (billy may's gray stuff is great for joints but terrible for sculpting) and never liked the results, I should give green stuff a try.

And definitely, seam lines are the bane of the ogre army!

One note on the blood tutorials - the ogre book has a great one, IF you leave off the wash until after you spray the model with sealer. applying it after makes it look fresh.

I love Mr Beardy with the two iron fists - a conversion with heaps of character.

Haha, my brother in law said the same thing about the mold lines. They are gone, I usually shave those things off before I do a base coat. I mean, it does say works in progress!

for the blood simply stipple on scab red, red gore, blood red, then a quick flickers of varnish, you end up with nicely bloodstained weapons that look like they have fresh wet blood, or just look online there are millions of tutorials!

I vote the Irongut with the tyrant hammer arm for the BSB.

Update to the Tyrant armed guy. As said, I added a lil' more fur to the arm to try to make it look less bulky. Also swapped the crooked sword.

...ignore the cat fur. It's off the model now. 

Your sculpting is going the right way.

One thing, I have to say though: the right arm on the last picture is way too high.
The right shoulder is up against his ear and the left is just correct.

Well, it's as Reg stated before. It's a Tyrant's arm on there and they're a lot larger than the normal bull body. I couldn't shave enough off with the tools I have, so I had hoped the green cloak would make it look a bit better.

I could try taking off the hammer arm, snapping the hammer off and placing in a normal bull arm in its place...

And now for an up-a-date.

Missing my green grass flock and various little things from moving. Still got a bit of time to work on some Ogres.



A regiment. Working on finishing their bases and that last unit champion there. Been changing up methods of painting with just about each one. Still trying to get that gore effect down that GW posted in their ogre section. Really need to get myself some washes.



Regiment two. Mostly a dry brushed group. Not sure how I feel about my banner. As you can see, they got some more grass to them before I packed my stuff. Not finished with the bases. Need to go out and get some better looking grass to add.

I'm starting to wonder if my topic here is starting to become a Gnoblog. If so, could a moderator or someone gutbarge this into a more appropriate place?

Boosh. Found a rusty technique I liked. Went back over all the finished bulls and redid their metal bits.

I like the fact that he is standing on barrels, it makes him look even more commading than he already is, keep up the good work.

He has the dwarf rune for "Steel" on his gutplate. (Enchanted shield)

I play Orks for 40k and I think I need a new army bag. The "Squiggoth" doesn't quite fit in there...



Got a house rule that if the cat knocks over your figures on the table, they instant die from a "cat"astrophe.

Might as well post something of an update. Still a very much WIP, but here's pics nonetheless.






Tiny Bubbles. Neckbeard's slave giant.

Slaughtermaster Giblets. (Really wanted to name him after the pit master at the BBQ place I worked for, but the name doesn't fit an ogre.) Painted mostly with washes on this guy, and I really like how it came out.

Love the Slayer and the incorporation of the Runes.  I play Dwarfs all the time with my Ogres so I can just imagine my opponents face if I put that guy down.  Your painting on the giant looks really good, I really like how the skin tone turned out.

Great job with your army Idlem!  I'm also loving the dwarf slayer ogre.

Wow those are great man, I need to get braver with modifying my Ogre's.

Sometimes a Neckbeard is faced with a difficult option. Sometimes you fight somethin' that just is too big to be pummeled with with fists alone, and is too hitty for your dwarven runes to protect. Sometimes, you need to get your big ol' whippin' switch.



When life gives you greater demons, the Maw gives you a tenderizer.
