How to make ship deck bases

Seen a lot of OK pirate armies lately. So I thought I would post a guide how to make ship deck bases.



Take a base and add a large chunk of green stuff to it. Turn the base upside down and squeeze it against a plain plastic surface (use a lot of water on the green stuff or the plastic surface so the green stuff dosn't stick to the plastic).



Gently turn the base "upside up" making sure the green stuff hasn't glued itself to the plastic. Let the greenstuff harden for 10-20 min. Use a hobby knife to cut the lines between the planks. After the first cut use a broader tool to make the lines broader (I use the games workshop sculpting tool).



Add a knot or two to the planks. Now use the hobby knife to make the fine veins in the planks, making sure they don't cross each other and they aren't getting to close to the knots.

Might do this on my pirats aswell. Already done 36 bases of wood, but i might rip it off to do this instead.

Another idea that I have seen done on 25mm bases is to use wooden coffee stirrers but to stick them diagonally over the bases set up in ranks then ether break them along the edges or cut with a craft knife then use varnish to colour them

Makes great wood effect and looks brilliant ranked up

Helps if like me you don't have a steady enough hand for the above technique

A friend of mine created a great floor board effect years ago on the original Goldfag models by using old ice lolly sticks, he snapped them by hand at either end to achieve a broken rotted wood effect at the edges of the base then scored lines into the flat of the sticks using a modelling knife to exaggerate the grain of the timber and the natural knots etc. Looked great, shame I can't get pictures up, he has since given the models away . This is a great guide though, I'm half tempted to have a go tonight
