As I have said I am just returning to ogres after a long hiatus and I have been reading a lot, watching a lot of games, and following the army lists of the veterans. Can't help noticing the lack of maneaters? So what gives? Is it the cost to benefit ratio keeping them off the field?
I have seldom used them before despite loving the models, but only because I have consistently found 2 gorgers to be a must. One of my first thoughts upon seeing the new army structure rules was that I could now have both gorgers and still field some maneaters.
So anyone using them? Is it worth it? Thoughts? Comments?

They're simply too damn expensive.

There's an enchanted item called crown of command which makes a unit stubborn. The norm now is that it's put on a character who is put into a unit of ironguts or bulls so the need for the maneaters is a lot less.
Jawa_Scum09 Nov 2010
Yes its a shame. I love my 2 painted maneaters but alas I can never see a reason to bring them along anymore. With the crown of command, as falconrider pointed out, you can make any unit stubborn so their a no trick pony now for too many points!
I guess if you were having a 3k list you could indulge, but I cant see any other reason.

I think the problem with Maneaters in 8th is that they've pretty much stayed where they were whilst the rest of the army has taken a big leap forward.
In 7th we'd overlook the expense due to the fact that everything else was massively over-priced as well.
Now with the improvements of 8th (the Crown of Command being a signicant one) there really is no reason (other than cool models) to take Maneaters.
A real shame.
One that I'm sure will be rectified in the new book.....
I also think Gorgers have pretty much had their day as well. The new swift reform, make way and TLOS rules mean they rarely perform anywhere near as good as 7th.
Little known Ogre fact No. 26:
The so-called 'Great Migration' was in fact a retaliatory invasion of Cathay.

I just use the models for my characters. They're just to many points for me to indulge in.

I used to run Maneaters in 7th.
2 Maneaters and a Tyrant with Brace of Handguns. Since I was using other units to Bait and Flee the fact that they were moving 6 and shooting wasn't an issue. Tyrant also hand Thundermace, Wyrdstone Necklace, and Longstrider Big Name.
The Maneaters would keep the tyrant around if he managed to miss his single Thundermace attack and 10 WS4 S5 attacks is nothing to sneeze at. The combo usually wiped out the front rank of most units and then some and so they often only took shooting wounds.
Now in 8th Edition even if I kill 20 models if they have 30 I am taking 10 attacks and they will likely all go into the hard to keep alive Maneaters, the pair is 180 points, as much as some solid blocks of troops in other armies or 5 naked Bulls. 5 naked bulls give me 15 wounds instead of 6 and 15 WS3 S4 AP attacks and do just fine in combat supporting a Tyrant.

the Crown of Command being a significant one
I beg to differ on this one. Sheer Ogredamageoutput and re-rollable general ld. makes the Crown mostly redundant on any spot but the outer flanks, which was just not a position where maneater mini-deathstars just to do their thing. I really don't understand why so many strongholders are so keen on the crown, but I must be missing something. Ogres have no problem winning combat, we have problems "breaking" steadfast.
'Step up', 'assisting attacks', 'new BSB rules', 'striking in initiativeorder' and even the 'new musicianrules' are what makes the use of maneaters overly expensive. Ogre unitsize has doubled (maneatersize tripled) and units also need 2 extra Ogres (maneatersize quadrupled) this edition which are allowed to die before landing the first blow. 180 pt. Maneater cannonfodder is not a good idea. I might see them work with three characters in the front, making for a small superexpensive unit, which is just ridiculous this edition and makes ye wonder where the actuall army is to be found.

I'm with you and have been arguing the problem with the Ogre Horde is that it has issues breaking steadfast. Only small Ogre units need Stubborn and those would mostly be for tying up a unit. Possibly a Thundermace Tyrant or something like that which will slowly grind away a unit while holding it in place, but not much else can really make use of the Stubborn.

Youre lucky that youre not facing Empire or Dwarf Gunlines then. I can stack a unit from 6-14 models of bulls or ironguts and they normally take a panic test on turn 1 or 2. They are always a lot smaller when they get across the board and im normally thankful I have my crown if I lose combat. Especially being flanked by a detachment!

Trust me the Crown is still needed. If we lose a big Combat it can be game over if not testing on stubborn Leadership.
For a very small points outlay this item significantly improves our Ogres chances of survival.

I agree. I create an anvil of naked bulls to survive the most devastating charges out there, then counter charge with irongut units. Even if I ran maneaters to make a (expensive) deathstar, having 7 bulls with 2 characters in it with the crown could hold a massive (or several) units into combat for multiple turns. This leaves my deathstar time to mop things up one unit at a time. You don't want that expensive deathstar getting hit on 3 sides, and you don't want to throw away points in smaller (easily broken) units to guard the flanks. I could see the strategy I just mentioned tearing up one flank and turning for a series of charges and overruns. I might look into that for a 3k list.

I recently faced a Dwarf Gunline. I looked at his models, everything was ranged based + an Anvil, I stated, "You Win! Wasn't that fun?", and moved on to play a fun game with a more interesting army.
But it is 35 points on a character. Our characters can be rather expensive and this often means we limit their offense or defense, both of which can help us be sure we are not loosing a big combat.
If Maneaters could have a bit more defense than they currently have then they would be perfect interceptors for the flanks.

Okies Man Eaters haven't been explored much in 8th Edition. What can we do to protect them?
Anti Magic We can switch Rune Maw to our BSB making him defenseless. We could take 3 Thiefstones to give an alternative Magic Defence. Run an SM & Butcher to ensure lots of Buffs (also helps vs. Shooting).
Anti Shooty The Iron Curse Icon is a very cheap item which gives some protection for the unit vs War-machines (before our Buffs get useful. Upgrading the Man Eaters to HA also helps vs. Missiles.
Screening the Man Eater unit from direct fire where possible using Trappers can also reduce the ranged damage received.
You could try a unit of 6 Maneaters. 3 on the front rank with Cathayan Long-swords & 3 on the second rank with GWs. The higher Initiative and WS means the unit receives less wounds in HtH, then the ASL GW's inflict the wounds along with Stomps. Throw in a tooled up SM who can buff the unit with extra Toughness & Strength & Regen.
